Abstract

A system for use in surgery includes a central body, a visualization system operably connected to the central body, a video rendering system, a head-mounted display for displaying images from the video rendering system, a sensor system, and a robotic device operably connected to the central body. The visualization system includes at least one camera and a pan system and/or a tilt system. The sensor system tracks the position and/or orientation in space of the head-mounted display relative to a reference point. The pan system and/or the tilt system are configured to adjust the field of view of the camera in response to information from the sensor system about changes in at least one of position and orientation in space of the head-mounted display relative to the reference point.

Claims (26)

1. A method for operating a surgical robot comprising a camera assembly and a robot arm assembly within a body cavity of a patient, the camera assembly including a plurality of cameras and a camera body, the method comprising:

a) inserting the surgical robot including the camera assembly and the robot arm assembly in an insertion configuration through an incision into the body cavity of the patient with a field of view of the camera assembly being perpendicular to a direction of insertion into the body cavity of the patient during insertion of the camera assembly;

b) actuating the camera assembly into an in-use configuration in which a direction of an inter-camera separation between two or more of the plurality of cameras is oriented parallel to and is offset from the direction of insertion; and

c) rotating the camera assembly about two or more degrees of freedom from the in-use configuration including tilting the camera assembly about a tilt axis and panning the camera assembly about a pan axis independent of any change in orientation of the robot arm assembly, wherein the tilt axis is parallel to the direction of the inter-camera separation and extends through a length of the camera body, and wherein the pan axis is perpendicular to the direction of the inter-camera separation and extends through the camera body;

wherein a size of the inter-camera separation between the two of the plurality of cameras exceeds a size of the incision.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the surgical robot is inserted within the body cavity of the patient through a single trocar in a).

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the camera assembly and the robot arm assembly rotate independently in the in-use configuration.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein a first arm and a second arm of the robot arm assembly each rotate independently of one another.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the first arm rotates about a first actuator of the first arm that is a most proximal portion of the first arm within the body cavity of the patient, and wherein the second arm rotates about a first actuator of the second arm which is a most proximal portion of the second arm within the body cavity of the patient.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein rotating the first arm at least 180 degrees and the second arm at least 180 degrees results in the first arm and the second arm switching a right-left orientation so that when the first arm is a right arm of the surgical robot and the second arm is the left arm of the surgical robot, the first arm becomes the left arm and second arm becomes the right arm.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein software operably coupled with the surgical robot performs the switching of the right-left orientation with respect to a controller that is used to operate the surgical robot.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the robot arm assembly is a cable-driven assembly.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the surgical robot is used in a surgical procedure on a gallbladder of the patient, and wherein the surgical robot is positioned so that the surgical robot is facing a right side of the patient.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the surgical robot is used in a surgical procedure on a stomach of a patient, and wherein the surgical robot is positioned so that the surgical robot is facing a left side of the patient.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the robotic arm assembly comprises a first robotic arm and a second robotic arm each having a range of motion that is the same as a human arm.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first robotic arm and the second robotic arm each comprise a joint equivalent of a human shoulder, a joint equivalent of a human elbow, and a joint equivalent of a human wrist.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein c) is performed by a pan system configured to pan the camera assembly, a tilt system configured to tilt the camera assembly, or both.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising at least one of panning and tilting the camera assembly in response to a sensed position of the camera assembly relative to a reference point inside the body cavity.

15. The method of claim 1 , further comprising coupling the robotic arm assembly with the camera assembly inside the body cavity.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the robotic arm assembly comprises a cautery tool.

17. The method of claim 1 , further comprising adjusting a position of the robotic arm assembly in a plane that is parallel to a plane of view of the camera assembly.

18. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sensing at least one of a position and an orientation of the camera assembly using a camera sensor.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the camera assembly is configured to rotate more than 180 degrees.

20. The method of claim 1 , wherein the robotic arm assembly and the camera assembly are configured to be adjustably positioned independently from each other inside of the body cavity.

21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pan axis extends through a central portion of the camera body disposed between the two of the plurality of cameras.

22. The method of claim 1 , wherein the two of the plurality of cameras that have the inter-camera separation also have overlapping fields of view.
