Abstract

A method for authenticating the compatibility of a staple cartridge with a surgical instrument is disclosed. The method can comprise inserting a staple cartridge into a surgical instrument, receiving a first signal from a first RFID tag on a first component of the staple cartridge with an RFID reader system, receiving a second signal from a second RFID tag on a second component of the staple cartridge with the RFID reader system, comparing the first signal and the second signal to stored data for a compatible staple cartridge, and locking a staple firing system of the surgical instrument if the first signal and the second signal do not match the stored data for a compatible staple cartridge.

Claims (48)

1. A method for authenticating the compatibility of a staple cartridge with a surgical instrument comprising:

inserting a staple cartridge into a surgical instrument;

transmitting a first signal from a first RFID tag on a first component of the staple cartridge to an RFID reader system;

comparing the first signal to a set of stored data for a compatible staple cartridge;

transmitting a second signal from a second RFID tag on a sled of the staple cartridge to the RFID reader system;

evaluating a source position of the second signal to determine operability of the staple cartridge; and

unlocking a staple firing system of the surgical instrument based on said comparison and said evaluation.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said comparing step comprises comparing the first signal to more than one set of stored data for compatible staple cartridges.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first RFID tag and the second RFID tag comprise active RFID tags.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising a step of interrogating the first RFID tag with the RFID reader system before said step of transmitting the first signal from the first RFID tag.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising a step of interrogating the second RFID tag with the RFID reader system before said step of transmitting the second signal from the second RFID tag.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising a step of operating the staple firing system to perform a staple firing stroke after said unlocking step.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first component comprises a cartridge body, and wherein the sled is movable from a proximal unfired position to a distal fired position during a staple firing stroke.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein determining operability of the stalple cartridge comprises determining if the sled is in its proximal unfired position.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first component comprises a cartridge body, and wherein said method further comprises transmitting a third signal from a third RFID tag on a cover removably attached to the cartridge body.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein said step of transmitting the third signal to the RFID reader system can only occur when the cover is attached to the cartridge body.

11. A method for authenticating the compatibility of a staple cartridge with a surgical instrument comprising:

inserting a staple cartridge into a surgical instrument;

receiving a first signal from a first RFID tag on a first component of the staple cartridge with an RFID reader system;

comparing the first signal to a set of stored data for an acceptable staple cartridge;

receiving a second signal from a second RFID tag on a sled of the staple cartridge with the RFID reader system;

evaluating an intensity of the second signal to determine operability of the staple cartridge; and

locking a staple firing system of the surgical instrument based on said comparison and said evaluation.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein said comparing step comprises comparing the first signal to stored data for more than one compatible staple cartridge.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first RFID tag and the second RFID tag comprise active RFID tags.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising a step of interrogating the first RFID tag with the RFID reader system before said step of receiving the first signal from the first RFID tag.

15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising a step of interrogating the second RFID tag with the RFID reader system before said step of receiving the second signal from the second RFID tag.

16. The method of claim 11 , further comprising a step of operating the staple firing system to perform a staple firing stroke if said locking step does not occur.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first component comprises a cartridge body, and wherein the sled is movable from a proximal unfired position to a distal fired position during a staple firing stroke.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein determining operability of the staple cartridge comprises determining if the sled is in its proximal unfired position.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first component comprises a cartridge body, and wherein said method further comprises transmitting a third signal from a third RFID tag on a cover removably attached to the cartridge body.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein said step of receiving the third signal with the RFID reader system can only occur when the cover is attached to the cartridge body.

21. A method for authenticating the compatibility of a staple cartridge with a surgical instrument comprising:

inserting a staple cartridge into a surgical instrument;

receiving a first signal from a first RFID component on a first component of the staple cartridge with an RFID reader system;

comparing the first signal to a set of stored data for a compatible staple cartridge;

receiving a second signal from a second RFID component on a sled of the staple cartridge with the RFID reader system;

evaluating if the second RFID component is within range of the RFID reader system based on the second signal, wherein said evaluation determines operability of the staple cartridge; and

unlocking a staple firing system of the surgical instrument based on said comparison and said evaluation.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein said comparing comprises comparing the first signal to stored data for more than one compatible staple cartridge.

23. The method of claim 21 , wherein the first RFID component and the second RFID component comprise active RFID tags.

24. The method of claim 21 , further comprising interrogating the first RFID component with the RFID reader system before said step of receiving the first signal from the first RFID component.

25. The method of claim 21 , further comprising interrogating the second RFID component with the RFID reader system before said step of receiving the second signal from the second RFID component.

26. The method of claim 21 , further comprising the staple firing system to perform a staple firing stroke after said unlocking.

27. The method of claim 21 , wherein the first component comprises a cartridge body, and wherein the sled is movable from a proximal unfired position to a distal fired position during a staple firing stroke.

28. The method of claim 27 , wherein evaluating if the second RFID component is within range of the RFID reader system comprises evaluating if the sled is in the proximal unfired position.

29. The method of claim 21 , wherein the first component comprises a cartridge body, and wherein said method further comprises transmitting a third signal from a third RFID component on a cover removably attached to the cartridge body.

30. The method of claim 29 , wherein said receiving the third signal with the RFID reader system can only occur when the cover is attached to the cartridge body.
