Abstract

The present invention relates to comprehensive systems, devices and methods for delivering energy to tissue for a wide variety of applications, including medical procedures (e.g., tissue ablation, resection, cautery, vascular thrombosis, treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and dysrhythmias, electrosurgery, tissue harvest, etc.). In certain embodiments, systems, devices, and methods are provided for treating a tissue region (e.g., a tumor) through application of energy.

Claims (38)

1. A method comprising providing a system comprising:

a microwave power supply;

a coolant source;

one or more energy delivery devices in electrical communication with said microwave power supply and in fluid communication with said coolant source, wherein said one or more energy delivery devices comprise a handle at a proximal end and an antenna having an inner conductor and an outer conductor configured to generate a tissue ablation region at a distal end;

an imaging component configured to image a tissue region to be ablated by said one or more energy delivery devices and to image a tissue ablation region; and

a computer comprising software that, when executed, causes the computer to Perform the following:

process and display-information derived from said imaging component and receive intraprocedure feedback obtained during delivery of ablation energy wherein said intraprocedure feedback at least comprises imaging information and temperature information,

generate a predicted map of the tissue region to be ablated and readjust the predicted map of the tissue region to be ablated during the ablation procedure directly based upon the received intraprocedure feedback at least including the imaging information and the temperature information obtained during the delivery of ablation energy,

direct placement of the one or more energy delivery devices during the delivery of ablation energy to achieve a desired ablation result;

imaging the tissue region to be ablated with said imaging component and generating the predicted map of the tissue region to be ablated;

starting the delivery of ablation energy through ablating the tissue region to be ablated defined by the generated predicted map of the tissue region to be ablated, wherein the ablating forms the tissue ablation region,

imaging the formed tissue ablation region with said imaging component and generating the readjusted predicted map of the tissue region to be ablated, and redirecting the placement of the one or more energy delivery devices based on the readjusted predicted map of the tissue region to be ablated during the delivery of ablation energy to achieve the desired ablation result

ablating the tissue ablation region defined by the readjusted predicted map of the tissue region to be ablated.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of displaying the imaged tissue region to be ablated prior to the step of ablating the tissue region to be ablated.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of displaying the ablated tissue region to be ablated.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said imaging component is selected from the group consisting of CT, MRI, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, thermoacoustic, and nuclear medicine.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said software comprises instructions to record one or more of the following:

information related to the tissue region to be ablated;

information related to a size of the tissue region to be ablated;

information related to a shape of a target within the tissue region to be ablated; and

information related to a location of the target within the tissue region to be ablated.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein said intraprocedure feedback comprises a recommendation of adjustment of power output.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein said software comprises instructions to request input parameter information from a user.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein said input parameter information is one or more of:

a type of tumor to be ablated within the tissue region to be ablated;

a type of tissue to be ablated within the tissue region to be ablated;

a location of an ablation target within the tissue region to be ablated;

a size of the ablation target within the tissue region to be ablated;

a location of tissue located in a vicinity of but not within the tissue ablation region within the tissue region to be ablated;

a location of a vulnerable structure to avoid ablating within the tissue region to be ablated; and

blood flow within the tissue region to be ablated.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein said software draws and displays the predicted map of the tissue region to be ablated.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein said software displays the received intraprocedure feedback.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein said intraprocedure feedback further comprises one or more of the following:

properties of the tissue region to be ablated;

continuous feedback related to the tissue region to be ablated;

feedback related to the tissue region to be ablated at defined time points.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predicted map of the tissue region to be ablated is a dimensional map of the tissue region to be ablated.
