Abstract

Methods and apparatuses for monitoring either or both the performance of an orthodontic appliance for repositioning a patient's teeth and/or the user compliance in wearing the appliance using a biosensor. The apparatuses described herein may include one or more sensors, including biosensors, electrical sensors, or both, configured to generate sensor data related to user compliance and/or repositioning of the patient's teeth by an orthodontic appliance.

Claims (45)

1. A method comprising:

monitoring a performance of an orthodontic device for a dentition within an oral cavity of a patient, the orthodontic device including:

a plurality of tooth receiving cavities configured to receive and exert one or more orthodontic repositioning forces on a plurality of teeth of the dentition; and

at least one biosensor system comprising at least one first bioreceptor configured to interact with one or more tooth motion biomarkers in a fluid in the oral cavity of the patient, the one or more tooth motion biomarkers associated with movement of the plurality of teeth in response to the one or more orthodontic repositioning forces, the at least one biosensor system further comprising at least one second bioreceptor configured to interact with one or more compliance biomarkers in the fluid in the oral cavity of the patient, the one or more compliance biomarkers associated with compliance of the patient to a treatment plan;

wherein monitoring the performance comprises:

monitoring a first interaction signal using the at least one biosensor system, the first interaction signal associated with a first interaction between the at least one first bioreceptor and the one or more tooth motion biomarkers;

comparing first signal attributes of the first interaction signal against a first threshold for a specific phase of tooth movement;

monitoring a second interaction signal associated with a second interaction between the at least one second bioreceptor and the one or more compliance biomarkers;

comparing second signal attributes of the second interaction signal against a second threshold for a specific measure of compliance for the patient; and

providing one or more recommendations for changing the treatment plan based on the comparing of the first interaction signal attributes against the first threshold and the comparing of the second signal attributes against the second threshold.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first signal attributes comprise a signal strength of the first interaction signal.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more recommendations for changing the treatment plan comprise one or more recommendations to change an orthodontic appliance based on the specific measure of compliance for the patient.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more recommendations for changing the treatment plan comprises one or more recommendations to change an orthodontic appliance at a specified time.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the specific phase of tooth movement corresponds to a velocity of root movement of roots of the plurality of teeth; and

the method further comprises determining when the velocity of root movement is substantially zero, thereby indicating a conclusion of at least a portion of the treatment plan.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising communicating data related to the one or more recommendations to a remote device.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the remote device is one or more of a smart phone and a dedicated receiver.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more tooth motion biomarkers are monitored over a predetermined time.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first interaction signal is sent by the at least one biosensor system at predetermined intervals of time.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining a rate of tooth movement based on the first interaction signal.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more tooth motion biomarkers is one or more of: Calgranulin-B, Serum albumin precursor, Immunoglobulin J chain, Ig alpha-1 chain C region, Cysteine-rich secretory protein 3 precursor (CRISP-3), Hemoglobin subunit beta, Stratifin, and soluble RANK Ligand (sRANKL).

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one first bioreceptor comprises an enzyme that selectively acts on the one or more tooth motion biomarkers.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fluid comprises saliva or gingival crevicular fluid (GCF).

14. A method comprising:

monitoring a performance of a plurality of orthodontic devices for a dentition within an oral cavity of a patient, the plurality of orthodontic devices implementing a plurality of stages of a treatment plan, wherein:

a first orthodontic device of the plurality of orthodontic devices includes:

a plurality of first tooth receiving cavities configured to receive and exert one or more first orthodontic repositioning forces on a plurality of teeth of the dentition; and

a first biosensor system comprising at least one first bioreceptor configured to interact with one or more tooth motion biomarkers in a fluid in the oral cavity of the patient, the one or more tooth motion biomarkers associated with movement of the plurality of teeth in response to the one or more first orthodontic repositioning forces;

a second orthodontic device of the plurality of orthodontic devices includes:

a plurality of second tooth receiving cavities configured to receive and exert one or more second orthodontic repositioning forces on the plurality of teeth of the dentition; and

a second biosensor system comprising at least one second bioreceptor configured to interact with one or more compliance biomarkers in the fluid in the oral cavity of the patient, the one or more compliance biomarkers associated with compliance of the patient to the treatment plan;

wherein monitoring the performance comprises:

monitoring a first interaction signal using the first biosensor system, the first interaction signal associated with a first interaction between the at least one first bioreceptor and the one or more tooth motion biomarkers;

monitoring a second interaction signal using the second biosensor system, the second interaction signal associated with a second interaction between the at least one second bioreceptor and the one or more compliance biomarkers;

evaluating first signal attributes of the first interaction signal against a first threshold for a specific phase of tooth movement;

evaluating second signal attributes of the second interaction signal against a second threshold for specific measure of compliance for the patient; and

providing one or more recommendations for changing the treatment plan based on the evaluation of the first signal attributes against the first threshold and the evaluation of the second signal attributes against the second threshold.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first signal attributes comprise a signal strength of the first interaction signal.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the one or more recommendations for changing the treatment plan comprise one or more recommendations to change an orthodontic appliance based on the specific measure of compliance for the patient.
