Abstract

Systems and methods for identifying, assembling, and publishing content are described. A a video content item, having a first time length, is identified by a system to be included in a program scheduled for a first time period. The video may be hosted on a third party system. A first time span within the first program is allocated for the video, wherein the first time span is longer than the first time length. The system determines, prior to or at the first time period, a time difference between a current length of the video and the first time span. At least partly in response to determining that the video has a time length shorter than the first time span, the system selects supplemental content based at least in part of the determined time difference to be streamed to user terminals over a data network within the first time period.

Claims (76)

1. A content distribution system, comprising:

a network interface;

a computing device; and

non-transitory computer readable memory that stores programs that when executed by the computing device, cause the content distribution system to perform operations comprising:

provide, via the network interface over an Internet using IP packets, an electronic program guide to a client device associated with a user, wherein the electronic program guide comprises:

a first axis comprising channel identifiers and for respective channels, program identifiers for scheduled programs configured to be streamed over the Internet using IP packets to client devices at respective scheduled times;

a second axis comprising an identification of time periods;

enable the user to scroll in the first axis and/or the second axis; and

enable a first program, streamed to the client device over the Internet from a server using IP packets, to be displayed via the client device at a same time as the electronic program guide is displayed on the client device.

2. The content distribution system as defined in claim 1 , the operations further comprising:

causing channels to be displayed in the electronic program guide grouped according to channel categories and in association with channel category names;

enabling the user to indicate one or more channels as favorite channels, and

at least partly in response to the user indicating one or more channels as favorite channels, emphasizing the one or more channels indicated as favorite channels in the electronic program guide;

enabling the user to indicate, via activation of a corresponding control, that a selected program is to be added to a library of programs associated with the user for later viewing, wherein the content distribution system stores an indication that the selected program is added to the library of programs associated with the user;

enabling the first program, streamed to the client device over the Internet from the server using IP packets, displayed via the client device at a same time as the electronic program guide is displayed on the client device, to be displayed in an expanded mode in response to a user activation of a first control;

providing a first search field via which the user can search for both channels and items of content;

causing a search to be executed in response to a first user query provided via the first search field; and

causing search results to be displayed on the client device.

3. The content distribution system as defined in claim 1 , the operations further comprising:

enabling a display area, in which the first program, streamed to the client device over the Internet from the server using IP packets, is displayed via the client device at a same time as the electronic program guide is displayed, to be closed.

4. The content distribution system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first program, streamed to the client device over the Internet using IP packets, is displayed as an overlay with respect to a portion of the electronic program guide.

5. The content distribution system as defined in claim 1 , the operations further comprising:

enabling the first program, streamed to the client device over the Internet from the server using IP packets, displayed via the client device at a same time as the electronic program guide is displayed on the client device, to be displayed in an expanded mode in response to a user activation of a first control.

6. The content distribution system as defined in claim 1 , the operations further comprising:

causing channels to be displayed in the electronic program guide grouped according to channel categories and in association with category names.

7. The content distribution system as defined in claim 1 , the operations further comprising:

causing on-demand content to be displayed in the electronic program guide grouped according to categories and in association with category names.

8. The content distribution system as defined in claim 1 , the operations further comprising:

at least partly in response to a user activation of a control, causing a plurality of channels assigned to a first category to be displayed in the electronic program guide in association with a first category name.

9. The content distribution system as defined in claim 1 , the operations further comprising:

enabling the user to indicate one or more channels as favorite channels; and

at least partly in response to the user indicating one or more channels as favorite channels, emphasizing the one or more channels indicated as favorite channels in the electronic program guide.

10. The content distribution system as defined in claim 1 , the operations further comprising:

enabling the user to indicate, via activation of a corresponding control, that a selected program is to be added to a library of programs associated with the user for later viewing, wherein the content distribution system stores an indication that the selected program is added to the library of programs associated with the user.

11. The content distribution system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the content distribution system is configured to store program scheduling information, channel definitions, channel categories, and video player schema information.

12. The content distribution system as defined in claim 1 , the operations further comprising:

providing a search interface via which the user can search for both channels and items of content;

causing a search to be executed in response to a first user query provided via the search interface; and

causing search results to be displayed on the client device.

13. Non-transitory computer readable memory that stores programs that when executed by a computing device, cause the computing device to perform operations comprising:

provide, over a network, an electronic program guide to a client device associated with a user, wherein the electronic program guide comprises:

a first axis comprising channel identifiers and for respective channels, program identifiers for scheduled programs configured to be streamed over an Internet using IP packets to client devices at respective scheduled times;

a second axis comprising an identification of time periods;

enable the user to scroll the electronic program guide in the first axis and/or the second axis; and

enable a first program, streamed to the client device over the Internet using IP packets, to be displayed via the client device at a same time as the electronic program guide is displayed on the client device.

14. The non-transitory computer readable memory as defined in claim 13 , the operations further comprising:

causing channels to be displayed in the electronic program guide grouped according to channel categories and in association with category names;

enabling the user to indicate one or more channels as favorite channels, and

at least partly in response to the user indicating one or more channels as favorite channels, emphasizing the one or more channels indicated as favorite channels in the electronic program guide;

enabling the user to indicate, via activation of a corresponding control, that a selected program is to be added to a library of programs associated with the user for later viewing;

providing a first search field via which the user can search for both channels and items of content;

causing a search to be executed in response to a first user query provided via the first search field; and

causing search results to be displayed on the client device.

15. The non-transitory computer readable memory as defined in claim 13 , the operations further comprising:

enabling a display area, in which the first program, streamed to the client device over the Internet using IP packets, is displayed via the client device at a same time as the electronic program guide is displayed, to be closed.

16. The non-transitory computer readable memory as defined in claim 13 , wherein the first program, streamed to the client device over the Internet using IP packets, is displayed as an overlay with respect to a portion of the electronic program guide.

17. The non-transitory computer readable memory as defined in claim 13 , the operations further comprising:

enabling the first program, streamed to the client device over the Internet using IP packets, displayed via the client device at a same time as the electronic program guide is displayed on the client device, to be displayed in an expanded mode in response to a user activation of a first control.

18. The non-transitory computer readable memory as defined in claim 13 , the operations further comprising:

causing channels to be displayed in the electronic program guide grouped according to channel categories and in association with category names.

19. The non-transitory computer readable memory as defined in claim 13 , the operations further comprising:

causing on-demand content to be displayed in the electronic program guide grouped according to categories and in association with category names.

20. The non-transitory computer readable memory as defined in claim 13 , the operations further comprising:

at least partly in response to a user activation of a control, causing a plurality of channels assigned to a first category to be displayed in the electronic program guide in association with a first category name.

21. The non-transitory computer readable memory as defined in claim 13 , the operations further comprising:

enabling the user to indicate one or more channels as favorite channels; and

at least partly in response to the user indicating one or more channels as favorite channels, emphasizing the one or more channels indicated as favorite channels in the electronic program guide.

22. The non-transitory computer readable memory as defined in claim 13 , the operations further comprising:

enabling the user to indicate, via activation of a corresponding control, that a selected program is to be added to a library of programs associated with the user for later viewing.

23. The non-transitory computer readable memory as defined in claim 13 , the operations further comprising:

enabling the user to indicate, via activation of a corresponding control, that a selected program is to be added to a library of programs associated with the user for later viewing.

24. The non-transitory computer readable memory as defined in claim 13 , the operations further comprising storing program scheduling information, channel definitions, channel categories, and video player schema information.

25. The non-transitory computer readable memory as defined in claim 13 , the operations further comprising:

providing a search interface via which the user can search for both channels and items of content;

causing a search to be executed in response to a first user query provided via the search interface; and

causing search results to be displayed on the client device.
