Abstract

A system includes at least partially autonomous vehicles, at least partially separated interconnected roadways, and a management system. Each of the vehicles is configured to cooperate with another vehicle or an area controller. The management system is configured to receive requests to transport, which may have respective start points and respective destinations. Additionally, the management system is configured, responsive to receiving the request, to assign a vehicle to fulfill the request. The assigned vehicle is configured to transport a person from the respective start point, at least in part via the interconnected roadways, to the respective destination.

Claims (50)

1. A transportation system for autonomous vehicle travel, comprising:

a plurality of autonomous vehicles;

a roadway system including:

a system of interconnected roadways; and

a plurality of boarding zones distributed along the system of interconnected roadways; and

a control system configured to:

receive, from a first autonomous vehicle at a first parking slot of a boarding zone of the plurality of boarding zones, a first indication that the first autonomous vehicle is prepared to depart the boarding zone;

receive, from a second autonomous vehicle at a second parking spot of the boarding zone, a second indication that the second autonomous vehicle is prepared to depart the boarding zone;

in response to receiving the first and second indications, assign the first autonomous vehicle and the second autonomous vehicle to a departure group; and

cause the respective autonomous vehicles in the departure group to depart their respective parking slots substantially simultaneously.

2. The transportation system of claim 1 , wherein the first autonomous vehicle and the second autonomous vehicle have a same destination.

3. The transportation system of claim 1 , wherein the first autonomous vehicle and the second autonomous vehicle are assigned to a same vehicle shoal for at least a portion of their journeys along the roadway system.

4. The transportation system of claim 1 , wherein the first parking slot is not adjacent to the second parking slot.

5. The transportation system of claim 1 , wherein the control system is further configured to:

receive a reservation request from a passenger;

in response to receiving the reservation request, generate a reservation for the passenger at the boarding zone;

detect a vehicle-assignment triggering condition; and

in response to detecting the vehicle-assignment triggering condition, assign the passenger to the first autonomous vehicle.

6. The transportation system of claim 5 , wherein the vehicle-assignment triggering condition is a detection of the passenger at the boarding zone.

7. The transportation system of claim 5 , wherein the first autonomous vehicle is selected from a set of autonomous vehicles that are scheduled to arrive at the boarding zone after the vehicle-assignment triggering condition is detected.

8. The transportation system of claim 6 , wherein the control system is further configured to cause information about at least one of the first autonomous vehicle or the first parking slot to the passenger.

9. The transportation system of claim 1 , wherein the first indication is sent to the control system by a communication system of the first autonomous vehicle.

10. A transportation system for autonomous vehicle travel, comprising:

a plurality of autonomous vehicles;

a roadway system including:

a system of interconnected roadways; and

a plurality of boarding zones distributed along the system of interconnected roadways and including a plurality of parking slots; and

a control system configured to:

receive a plurality of indications from a plurality of autonomous vehicles at a boarding zone of the plurality of boarding zones, each respective indication of the plurality of indications indicating that a respective autonomous vehicle is prepared to depart its respective parking slot in the boarding zone;

determine whether the plurality of indications satisfies a threshold number of indications;

in accordance with a determination that the plurality of indications satisfies the threshold number of indications, assign the plurality of autonomous vehicles to a departure group; and

cause the plurality of autonomous vehicles in the departure group to depart their respective parking slots substantially simultaneously.

11. The transportation system of claim 10 , wherein a particular indication of the plurality of indications is received from a particular autonomous vehicle.

12. The transportation system of claim 10 , wherein a particular indication of the plurality of indications is received from a mobile electronic device associated with a passenger of a particular autonomous vehicle.

13. The transportation system of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of autonomous vehicles are configured to travel in a vehicle shoal along at least a portion of a road segment of the boarding zone.

14. The transportation system of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of autonomous vehicles have a same destination.

15. A method of operating a transportation system for autonomous vehicle travel, comprising:

receiving, at a control system and from a first autonomous vehicle at a first parking slot of a boarding zone, a first indication that the first autonomous vehicle is prepared to depart the boarding zone;

receiving at the control system and from a second autonomous vehicle at a second parking spot of the boarding zone, a second indication that the second autonomous vehicle is prepared to depart the boarding zone;

in response to receiving the first and second indications, assigning the first autonomous vehicle and the second autonomous vehicle to a common departure group; and

causing the respective autonomous vehicles in the common departure group to depart their respective parking slots substantially simultaneously.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the first autonomous vehicle and the second autonomous vehicle have a same destination.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the first autonomous vehicle and the second autonomous vehicle are assigned to a same vehicle shoal for at least a portion of their journey along a roadway of the transportation system.

18. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

receiving a reservation request from a passenger;

in response to receiving the reservation request, generating a reservation for the passenger at the boarding zone;

determining that the passenger has arrived at the boarding zone; and

in response to determining that the passenger has arrived at the boarding zone, assigning the passenger to the first autonomous vehicle.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein determining that the passenger has arrived at the boarding zone comprises receiving, from a mobile device associated with the passenger, a location of the passenger.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein determining that the passenger has arrived at the boarding zone comprises detecting the presence of a mobile device associated with the passenger at the boarding zone.
