Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a field installable connector system. The connector system includes a factory terminated subassembly including a ferrule terminating an optical fiber of an optical fiber cable. The factory terminated subassembly has a small transverse cross-section to facilitate routing through a duct. The connector system also includes a field installable subassembly including various connector components that can be installed after the factory terminated subassembly has been routed through a duct. The components can be sealed and hardened.

Claims (27)

1. A field installable connector system, comprising:

a subassembly including a fiber optic cable including an optical fiber terminated at a ferrule at a front end of the subassembly, the cable extending rearwardly from a rear end of the ferrule; and

an elastomeric sealing sleeve configured to be sleeved rearwardly over the ferrule in an open configuration of the elastomeric sealing sleeve to a position rearward of the ferrule and surrounding the cable, the elastomeric sealing sleeve being further configured to elastically constrict, by releasing the elastomeric sealing sleeve, at the position into a constricted configuration of the elastomeric sealing sleeve to form a seal around the cable.

2. The field installable connector system of claim 1 , further comprising: a seal expansion tube configured to be positioned within the elastomeric sealing sleeve for holding the elastomeric sealing sleeve in the open configuration, the seal expansion tube being further configured to be removed from the elastomeric sealing sleeve to cause the elastomeric sealing sleeve to constrict into the constricted configuration.

3. The field installable connector system of claim 1 , wherein a front portion of the elastomeric sealing sleeve is mounted to a housing configured to be sleeved rearwardly over the subassembly, the housing having a front end and a rear end.

4. The field installed connector system of claim 3 , further comprising a hardened coupling element mounted to turn about a longitudinal axis of the housing.

5. The field installed connector system of claim 4 , wherein the hardened coupling element includes a twist-to-lock coupling interface.

6. The field installed connector system of claim 5 , further comprising a seal element on the housing closer to the front end of the housing than the rear end of the housing.

7. The field installable connector system of claim 1 , wherein the subassembly includes a ferrule hub mounted at a rear end of the ferrule.

8. The field installable connector system of claim 7 , further comprising a plug body that receives the ferrule and the ferrule hub.

9. The field installable connector system of claim 8 , wherein the subassembly includes a spring positioned rearward of the ferrule hub and surrounding the cable, the plug body receiving the spring, wherein the elastomeric sealing sleeve is configured to be sleeved, in the open configuration, rearwardly over the ferrule, the ferrule hub and the spring to the position.

10. The field installable connector system of claim 7 , wherein the fiber optic cable is anchored to the ferrule hub.

11. The field installable connector system of claim 10 , wherein the fiber optic cable includes a jacket and at least one strength member, and wherein the strength member is bonded to the ferrule hub.

12. A method of assembling a field installable connector, comprising:

providing a subassembly including a fiber optic cable including an optical fiber terminated at a ferrule at a front end of the subassembly, the cable extending rearwardly from a rear end of the ferrule;

sleeving an elastomeric sealing sleeve in an open configuration rearwardly over the ferrule to a position rearward of the ferrule and surrounding the cable; and

releasing the elastomeric sealing sleeve causing the elastomeric sealing sleeve to constrict at the position to form a seal around the cable.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the constricting is performed by removing a seal expansion tube from the elastomeric sealing sleeve.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising, prior to the sleeving, routing the subassembly through a duct.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein the subassembly is positioned in a casing when the subassembly is routed through the duct.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the casing is configured to be pushed or pulled through the duct with the subassembly inside the casing.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the routing includes pushing the subassembly through the duct.

18. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

sleeving a housing rearwardly over the ferrule; and

mounting a front portion of the elastomeric sealing sleeve to the housing.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein the subassembly includes a ferrule hub mounted at a rear end of the ferrule, the method further comprising sleeving a plug body so that the plug body receives the ferrule and the ferrule hub, wherein the fiber optic cable is anchored to the ferrule hub.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the subassembly includes a spring positioned rearward of the ferrule hub and surrounding the cable, the plug body receiving the spring.
