Abstract

Novel 85 Rb-enriched rubidium salt compounds of general formula 1, below and novel compounds of general formula 2, below. Compositions that contain at least one of the novel compounds and optionally further contain an antitumor drug. Methods that entail administering such compounds and compositions to treat cancer, optionally in combination with a conventional form of cancer therapy, such as chemotherapy and radiation treatment. When administered with a conventional form of cancer therapy, the compounds and compositions of the invention may be administered before, simultaneously with, or after administration of the conventional form of cancer therapy.

Claims (9)

1. A method of treating cancer comprising administering a composition comprising a compound of the following formula:

wherein each of R 1 through R 14 is independently selected from H, OH, F, Cl, Br, I, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, and NO 2 and the 85 Rb e is at least 90% 85 Rb, to a patient in need thereof, wherein the cancer is melanoma.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising administering to the patient a conventional form of cancer therapy within 36 hours of administering the composition.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the composition is administered about 24 hours prior to administering the conventional form of cancer therapy.

4. A method of treating cancer comprising administering a composition comprising a compound of the following formula:

wherein each of R 1 through R 14 is independently selected from H, OH, F, Cl, Br, I, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, and NO 2 and the 85 Rb e is at least 90% 85 Rb,

to a patient in need thereof, wherein the composition is administered about 24 hours prior to administering the conventional form of cancer therapy and wherein the conventional form of cancer therapy comprises the administration of at least one antitumor drug, wherein the cancer is breast cancer or is melanoma.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the at least one antitumor drug is selected from dacarbazine, doxorubicin, paclitaxel, vinorelbine and cisplatin.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the compound is present in an amount equivalent to between 40 mg 85 Rb e and 2400 mg 85 Rb e .
