Abstract

A surgical stapler, a cartridge for a surgical stapler, a cutting mechanism for a surgical stapler, and a method of applying surgical staples in a patient are disclosed herein. The stapler may have an anvil movably coupled to a support jaw between a clamped configuration and a closed configuration. The cartridge may be configured to fit within an envelope diameter and to removably house a plurality of B-form staples, at least one of the plurality of B-form staples having a base length and a leg length, the leg length at least 53% of the envelope diameter. The cartridge may have slots shaped to house at least a second one of the plurality of staples at an angle oblique to the first one of the plurality of staples.

Claims (32)

1. A component of a surgical stapler, comprising:

a support jaw comprising a cartridge configured to house a plurality of staples;

an anvil coupled to the support jaw, wherein the anvil is moveable relative to the support jaw; and

a mechanism having a cutting portion, a first member and a second member, wherein the first member is movable both longitudinally and transversely relative to the support jaw, wherein the first member is closer to the anvil than to the support jaw, wherein the second member is closer to the support jaw than to the anvil;

wherein the cartridge comprises a first slot shaped to receive at least a part of the mechanism, a second slot shaped to house at least a first one of the plurality of staples, and a third slot shaped to house at least a second one of the plurality of staples; and

wherein the mechanism further comprises a first leg located closer to a distal end of the first member than to a proximal end of the first member, and a second leg located closer to the proximal end of the first member than to the distal end of the first member, wherein the first leg and the second leg define a space therebetween, and wherein the mechanism further comprises a third leg extending from the second member, wherein the first and second legs are moveable vertically relative to the third leg extending from the second member, and wherein at least a part of the third leg is in the space between the first leg and the second leg.

2. The component of claim 1 , wherein one of the first leg or the third leg has a vertical rectilinear side, and wherein another one of the first leg or the third leg has an engagement member configured to moveably engage the vertical rectilinear side.

3. The component of claim 1 , wherein the mechanism is slidable relative to the support jaw.

4. The component of claim 1 , wherein the third slot is configured to house the second one of the plurality of staples at an angle oblique to the first one of the plurality of staples, and wherein the angle is anywhere from 4 degrees to 30 degrees.

5. The component of claim 1 , wherein the second slot is configured to translatably house a first staple pusher, and the third slot is configured to translatably house a second staple pusher.

6. The component of claim 1 , wherein when the mechanism is in a collapsed configuration, an uppermost surface of the mechanism is below an uppermost surface of the anvil; and

wherein when the mechanism is in an expanded configuration, the uppermost surface of the mechanism is above the uppermost surface of the anvil.

7. The component of claim 1 , wherein the mechanism further comprises a fourth leg extending from the second member, the third leg and the fourth leg defining a first gap that accommodates at least a part of the first leg.

8. The component of claim 7 , wherein the mechanism further comprises a fifth leg extending from the second member, the third leg and the fifth leg defining a second gap that accommodates at least a part of the second leg.

9. The component of claim 1 , wherein the first leg and the second leg extend vertically from the first member.

10. The component of claim 1 , wherein the first leg comprises a rectilinear cutting edge.

11. A component of a surgical stapler, comprising:

a support jaw comprising a cartridge configured to house a plurality of staples;

an anvil coupled to the support jaw, wherein the anvil is moveable relative to the support jaw; and

a mechanism having a first flange shaped to slidingly engage an outer surface of the anvil, and a second flange shaped to slidingly engage the support jaw, wherein the first flange is moveable relative to the second flange;

wherein the cartridge comprises a first slot shaped to receive at least a part of the mechanism, a second slot shaped to house at least a first one of the plurality of staples, and a third slot shaped to house at least a second one of the plurality of staples; and

wherein the mechanism further comprises a first leg extending from the first flange, wherein the mechanism also comprises a second leg and a third leg extending from the second flange, the second leg and the third leg defining a first gap that accommodates at least a part of the first leg.

12. The component of claim 11 , wherein the mechanism is slidable relative to the support jaw.

13. The component of claim 11 , wherein one of the first leg or the third leg has a vertical rectilinear side, and wherein another one of the first leg or the third leg has an engagement member configured to moveably engage the vertical rectilinear side.

14. The component of claim 11 , wherein the second slot is configured to translatably house a first staple pusher, and the third slot is configured to translatably house a second staple pusher.

15. The component of claim 11 , wherein when the mechanism is in a collapsed configuration, an uppermost surface of the mechanism is below an uppermost surface of the anvil; and

wherein when the mechanism is in an expanded configuration, the uppermost surface of the mechanism is above the uppermost surface of the anvil.

16. The component of claim 11 , wherein the third leg extending from the second flange is proximal to the second leg extending from the second flange.

17. The component of claim 11 , wherein the second leg and the third leg extend vertically from the second flange.

18. The component of claim 11 , wherein the mechanism further comprises a fourth leg extending from the first flange, and a fifth leg extending from the second flange, and wherein the third leg and the fifth leg define a second gap that accommodates at least a part of the fourth leg.

19. The component of claim 18 , wherein the third leg is between the second leg and fifth leg.

20. The component of claim 11 , wherein the first leg comprises a rectilinear cutting edge.
