Abstract

An air cleaner assembly is described and shown which includes a housing having an air flow inlet, an air flow outlet and a housing body and access cover. A serviceable filter cartridge is positioned within the housing. A projection/receiver arrangement providing for engagement between the cartridge and the housing is provided. The projection/receiver arrangement can be configured in a manner that inhibits undesired motion of the cartridge, once installed. An example projection/receiver arrangement is provided, which includes a serpentine receiving groove on the access cover and a serpentine projection on the filter cartridge. Example filter cartridge features are described.

Claims (56)

1. An air filter cartridge comprising:

(a) filter media extending from a first end to a second end in an axial direction, and surrounding an open interior;

(b) a first end piece having an air flow aperture therethrough and located on the filter media first end;

(c) a housing seal arrangement positioned on the first end piece; and,

(d) a second end piece closed to air flow therethrough and located on the filter media second end;

(i) the second end piece includes a projection arrangement extending from the second end piece in a direction away from the first end piece;

(ii) the projection arrangement including a wall having an outer surface and an inner surface, and the wall extends about a central portion of the second end piece; and

(iii) the inner surface and the outer surface of the wall comprises a plurality of spaced radially outwardly projecting sections.

2. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the housing seal arrangement comprises a radially inwardly directed housing radial seal.

3. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the radially directed housing seal arrangement comprises a radially outwardly directed housing radial seal.

4. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the inner surface and the outer surface of the wall comprises 6-10 of the spaced radially outwardly projecting sections.

5. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the inner surface and the outer surface of the wall comprises a plurality of spaced radially inwardly projecting sections.

6. An air filter cartridge according to claim 5 wherein:

(a) the inner surface and the outer surface of the wall comprises 6-10 of the spaced radially inwardly projecting sections.

7. An air filter cartridge according to claim 5 wherein:

(a) the plurality of spaced radially inwardly projecting sections and the plurality of spaced radially outwardly projecting sections are arranged in alternating inwardly and outwardly projecting sections.

8. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the wall of the projection arrangement comprises the inner surface having a smallest inside dimension thereacross of at least 15 mm.

9. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the media is pleated.

10. An air filter cartridge according to claim 9 wherein:

(a) the media is cylindrical.

11. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the central portion of the second end piece comprises a recessed interior surface section.

12. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the wall comprises a continuous wall.

13. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the wall inner surface has a serpentine surface.

14. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the wall outer surface has a serpentine surface.

15. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the wall is not hollow.

16. An air filter cartridge comprising:

(a) filter media extending from a first end to a second end in an axial direction, and surrounding an open interior;

(b) a first end piece having an air flow aperture therethrough and located on the filter media first end;

(c) a housing seal arrangement positioned on the first end piece; and,

(d) a second end piece closed to air flow therethrough and located on the filter media second end;

(i) the second end piece includes a projection arrangement extending from the second end piece in a direction away from the first end piece;

(ii) the projection arrangement including a wall having an outer surface and an inner surface, and the wall extends about a central portion of the second end piece; and

(iii) the inner surface and the outer surface of the wall comprises a plurality of spaced radially inwardly projecting sections.

17. An air filter cartridge according to claim 16 wherein:

(a) the housing seal arrangement comprises a radially inwardly directed housing radial seal.

18. An air filter cartridge according to claim 16 wherein:

(a) the radially directed housing seal arrangement comprises a radially outwardly directed housing radial seal.

19. An air filter cartridge according to claim 16 wherein:

(a) the inner surface and the outer surface of the wall comprises 6-10 of the spaced radially inwardly projecting sections.

20. An air filter cartridge according to claim 16 wherein:

(a) the media comprised pleated media arranged in a cylinder.

21. An air filter cartridge according to claim 16 wherein:

(a) the wall comprises a continuous wall.

22. An air filter cartridge according to claim 16 wherein:

(a) the wall inner surface has a serpentine surface.
