Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed for mining lunar and Martian polar permafrost to extract gas propellants. The method can comprise identifying a plurality of near-polar landing sites in craters in which the surface comprises permafrost in perpetual darkness, wherein such landing sites have perpetual sunlight available at altitudes of about 100 to 200 m. A mining outpost can be established in at least one of the sites and a high altitude solar array deployed at the landing site using a lightweight mast tall enough to generate near continuous power for the outpost. Systems and apparatus are disclosed for mining the permafrost at the landing sites using radiant gas dynamic mining procedures. The systems can comprise a rover vehicle with an integrated large area dome for cryotrapping gases released from the surface and multi-wavelength radiant heating systems to provide adjustable heating as a function of depth.

Claims (30)

1. A system for mining permafrost from a surface in substantially permanent darkness, comprising:

one or more towers positioned on the surface, each of the towers having one or more solar receivers mounted thereon at a height that receives substantially perpetual sunlight; and

one or more rover vehicles configured to:

receive energy from the one or more solar receivers,

direct heat at the permafrost under the surface using the received energy, thereby releasing propellant, and

collect and store the propellant released from the permafrost.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more towers further comprise a system with sensors for locating propellant.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the solar receivers comprise at least one photovoltaic solar panel and the one or more towers comprise one or more lightweight masts held vertically into the sunlight.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the solar receivers comprise a deployable solar array configured to provide nearly continuous power by positioning the solar receivers in areas of prolonged illumination to collect incoming solar energy.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein at least one of the lightweight masts has a height in the range of 10 to 200 meters above the surface and extending above the shadow of a crater ridge into a persistent illumination zone.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the one or more rover vehicles are further configured to convert the received energy into at least one of radio frequency (RF), microwave, and infrared radiation to heat the permafrost at a depth control heating profile.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the one or more rover vehicles are further configured to contain energy within a deployable cover.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the one or more rover vehicles each comprise a sensor for locating propellant.

9. The system of claim 8 , further comprising overhead sensors configured to coordinate signals with sensors integrated into rover vehicles to locate propellant.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the deployable cover is further configured to surround a plurality of heaters configured to direct energy to the surface at a mining location.

11. The system of claim 8 , further comprising within the cover a phased array of panels with a subsurface focal plane.

12. The system of claim 8 , further comprising at least one drilling device configured to enable subsurface RF heating under the cover.

13. The system of claim 8 , further comprising an apparatus configured to receive energy and pass the energy from outside the cover, directing the energy to the surface under the cover such that the energy sublimates ice at or below the surface, causing water vapor to migrate upward and out of the permafrost and into a contained volume under the cover.

14. The system of claim 13 , further comprising a vapor capture system within the cover configured to move propellant vapors into a storage tank.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the vapor capture system comprises a rotating belt configured to contact, attract, and transport propellant into at least one storage tank.

16. The system of claim 7 , wherein the deployable cover comprises a dome having a conformable skirt to increase collection efficiency.

17. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a propellant processing facility configured to process the propellant and radiate waste heat generated during the processing of the propellant so as to liquify and cryogenically store the propellant.

18. A rover vehicle, comprising:

a power receiver configured to receive energy from one or more solar receivers mounted on one or more towers at a height that receives substantially perpetual sunlight;

a heater configured to direct heat at permafrost under a surface in substantially permanent darkness;

a propellant collector configured to collect propellant released from the permafrost; and

a storage tank configured to store the collected propellant.

19. The rover vehicle of claim 18 , wherein the propellant contains water and/or ice.

20. The rover vehicle of claim 18 , further comprising one or more sensors configured to map propellant within a subsurface environment based on detecting differences in dielectric constants of materials within the subsurface environment.
