Abstract

An apparatus for wrapping a load may include a film dispenser for dispensing a film web including a film dispensing drive. The apparatus may also include a rotational drive system for providing relative rotation between the load and the dispenser during a wrapping cycle. The apparatus may further include a controller configured to operatively couple the film dispensing drive and the rotational drive system such that, for any portion of a revolution of the film dispenser relative to the load during the wrapping cycle, the film dispenser dispenses a selected length of the film web corresponding to the portion of the revolution.

Claims (38)

1. A method of wrapping a load, comprising:

providing relative rotation between a film dispenser and the load during a wrapping cycle;

dispensing a film from a prestretch portion of a film dispenser, including driving rotation of a packaging material roller of the prestretch portion of the film dispenser;

sensing a film speed of the film downstream of the packaging material roller of the prestretch portion of the dispenser by an idle roller positioned downstream of the packaging material roller of the prestretch portion of the film dispenser and defining a film path extending between the packaging material roller of the prestretch portion of the film dispenser and the idle roller and having a length that is substantially fixed during dispensing of the film;

the idle roller being downstream from the prestretch portion of the film dispenser, the idle roller further being a non-driven idle roller; and

controlling a dispensing rate of the film dispenser based on the sensed film speed by controlling a rate of rotation of the packaging material roller of the prestretch portion of the film dispenser based at least in part on the sensed film speed.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the load is substantially rectangular.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the load has a plurality of corners.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

comparing the sensed film speed to an expected film speed;

modifying the dispensing rate of the film based on the comparison of the sensed film speed to the expected film speed.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein modifying the film dispensing rate includes varying the dispensing rate until the sensed film speed equals the expected speed.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein comparing the sensed film speed to the expected speed includes continuously comparing the expected speed to the sensed film speed, and further including varying the film dispensing rate when the sensed film speed is not equal to the expected speed.

7. A method of wrapping a load, comprising:

providing relative rotation between a film dispenser and a substantially rectangular load during a wrapping cycle;

dispensing a film from a prestretch portion of a film dispenser, including driving rotation of a packaging material roller of the prestretch portion of the film dispenser;

passing the dispensed film over an idle roller downstream of the packaging material roller of the prestretch portion of the film dispenser wherein the idle roller rotates relative to the speed of the dispensed film and independent of the control of prestretch levels, wherein the idle roller is positioned downstream of the packaging material roller of the prestretch portion of the dispenser and defines a film path extending between the packaging material roller of the prestretch portion of the film dispenser and the idle roller and having a length that is substantially fixed during dispensing of the film;

measuring a rotation rate of the idle roller; and

controlling a rate of dispensing the film based on the measured rotation rate of the idle roller by controlling a rate of rotation of the packaging material roller of the prestretch portion of the film dispenser based at least in part on the measured rotation rate of the idle roller.

8. A method of wrapping a load, comprising:

providing a film dispenser for dispensing a film web;

operating a rotational drive to provide relative rotation between the film dispenser and the load during a wrapping cycle;

operating a film dispensing drive of the film dispenser to dispense the film web during the wrapping cycle by driving rotation of a packaging material roller of a prestretch portion of the film dispenser;

monitoring an idle roller configured to rotatably engage the film web as it is dispensed from the film dispenser, wherein the idle roller is positioned downstream of the packaging material roller of the prestretch portion of the film dispenser and defines a film path extending between the packaging material roller of the prestretch portion of the film dispenser and the idle roller;

the idle roller being a non-driven idle roller;

comparing an expected speed of the idle roller to an actual speed of the idle roller; and

controlling speed of the film dispensing drive to minimize a difference between the actual speed and the expected speed by controlling a rate of rotation of the packaging material roller of the prestretch portion of the film dispenser based at least in part on the comparison between the expected speed of the idle roller and the actual speed of the idle roller.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein controlling the rotational drive and the film dispensing drive includes adjusting a dispensing speed of the film dispensing drive.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein if the actual speed exceeds the expected speed, controlling the rotational drive and the film dispensing drive includes increasing the dispensing speed.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein if the actual speed falls below the expected speed, controlling the rotational drive and the film dispensing drive includes decreasing the dispensing speed.

12. A method of automatically adjusting a film dispensing speed during a wrapping cycle, comprising:

providing relative rotation between a film dispenser and a load;

dispensing the film to be wrapped around the load during rotation of the dispenser relative to the load during a wrapping cycle using a packaging material roller of a prestretch portion of the film dispenser;

sensing movement of the dispensed film;

comparing the sensed movement of the dispensed film to expected movement of the dispensed film; and

adjusting a dispensing speed of the film during the wrapping cycle in response to a difference between the sensed movement and the expected movement by controlling a rate of rotation of the packaging material roller based at least in part on the comparison of the sensed movement of the dispensed film to the expected movement of the dispensed film;

wherein sensing movement includes sensing a surface speed of the dispensed film downstream of the packaging material roller of the prestretch portion of the film dispenser, wherein sensing the surface speed is performed at a sensing position along a film path extending from the driven packaging material roller to the sensing position and having a length that is substantially fixed during dispensing of the film;

wherein comparing the sensed movement of the dispensed film to expected movement of the dispensed film includes comparing a sensed surface speed of the dispensed film to an expected surface speed of the dispensed film.
