Abstract

A retractor for use in surgical operations comprises a pair of blade assemblies. In operation, the blade assemblies are initially in a closed position to assume a low profile, inserted into a relatively small incision, and stretched apart from each other, thereby stretching the skin about the incision to form an aperture longer than the incision. The retractor is adapted to rotate a first blade about a first axis and a second blade about a second axis. The retractor is adapted to move the pair of blade assemblies apart along a third axis. The retractor is adapted to pivot the first blade about a fourth axis and the second blade about a fifth axis. In some embodiments, a method of performing an operation, e.g. a spinal operation, on a patient using the disclosed retractor is provided.

Claims (29)

1. A retractor comprising:

a first blade;

a second blade;

a third blade comprising a longitudinally extending slot; and

a probe system comprising:

an anterior probe, and

a posterior probe,

wherein the anterior probe and the posterior probe are configured to mate,

wherein the longitudinally extending slot of the third blade is configured to receive the anterior probe and the posterior probe, and

a shim, wherein the shim and the posterior probe are configured to mate with a tongue and groove configuration.

2. The retractor of claim 1 , further comprising a first rotation mechanism that rotates the first blade and a first pivot mechanism that pivots the first blade.

3. The retractor of claim 2 , further comprising a second rotation mechanism that rotates the second blade and a second pivot mechanism that pivots the second blade.

4. The retractor of claim 1 , wherein the first blade is coupled to a first hub, the first hub comprising a post and a boss, further comprising a first pivot mechanism configured to pivot the first blade by rotating the boss.

5. The retractor of claim 1 , wherein the anterior probe comprises an anterior electrode.

6. The retractor of claim 1 , wherein the posterior probe comprises a posterior electrode.

7. The retractor of claim 1 , wherein the anterior probe and the posterior probe are configured to mate with a tongue and groove configuration.

8. The retractor of claim 1 , wherein the anterior probe and the posterior probe form a generally flat shape configured to separate the psoas muscle along muscle fibers.

9. The retractor of claim 1 , wherein the posterior probe comprises a retention feature configured to limit further movement of the anterior probe.

10. The retractor of claim 1 , wherein the shim and the third blade are configured to mate.

11. The retractor of claim 10 , wherein the shim and the third blade are configured to mate with a notch and detent configuration.

12. The retractor of claim 1 , wherein the anterior probe and/or the posterior probe comprises a passage configured to receive a K-wire.

13. The retractor of claim 1 , wherein the posterior probe is greater than half of the perimeter of the anterior probe and the posterior probe when mated.

14. The retractor of claim 1 , wherein the anterior probe and the posterior probe form a shape having a smooth perimeter.

15. The retractor of claim 1 , wherein the posterior probe comprises a stop, wherein the anterior probe is configured to abut the stop to limit further distal movement.

16. The retractor of claim 1 , wherein the shim is shorter than the anterior probe.

17. The retractor of claim 1 , wherein the shim is shorter than the posterior probe.

18. The retractor of claim 1 , wherein the anterior probe and the posterior probe form an oval cross-section.

19. The retractor of claim 1 , wherein the anterior probe and the posterior probe comprise a biocompatible metal.

20. The retractor of claim 1 , wherein the anterior probe and the posterior probe comprise a tip with sharpened edges.
