Abstract

A surgical retractor for retracting body tissue in a therapeutic procedure includes two lateral arms each having a block with an aperture extending transverse to a longitudinal axis of the arm. The distal end of each arm pivotably supports a retractor blade. A transverse extension, forming a retractor core, extends through the aperture and slideably supports a lateral arm at each end. A central arm also pivotably supports a retractor blade, and has an extension on a proximal end that is insertable into an aperture within the core. The lateral and central arms are translatable in connection with the core. The retractor blades can be pivoted by rotating a tool engagement. A rack and pinion, controlled by a pawl, is used to translate the side and central arms.

Claims (9)

1. A surgical retractor system comprising: a frame portion comprising a fixed plate having opposing upper and lower surfaces and a moveable carriage positioned on the lower surface of the fixed plate, wherein the moveable carriage is configured to move inwardly and outwardly with respect to the fixed plate in an anterior/posterior direction; a first blade having a first blade arm with a first blade arm longitudinal axis, the first blade arm operably attached to one side of the moveable carriage; a second blade having a second blade arm with a second blade arm longitudinal axis, the second blade arm operably attached to an opposing side of the moveable carriage; a third blade having a third blade arm with a third blade arm longitudinal axis, the third blade arm operably attached to the fixed plate along a central portion thereof; wherein the first blade arm and the second blade arm are attached to the moveable carriage such that translation of the moveable carriage in the anterior/posterior direction causes the first blade and the second blade to translate in the anterior/posterior direction, wherein the upper surface of the fixed plate includes a carriage actuator for linearly translating the first and second arms in the anterior/posterior direction, a first linear actuator for independently linearly translating the first arm along the first arm longitudinal axis in a medial/lateral direction, a second linear actuator for independently linearly translating the second arm along the second arm longitudinal axis in the medial/lateral direction, and a third linear actuator for independently linearly translating the third arm along the third arm longitudinal axis in the medial/lateral direction, wherein the first blade arm, the second blade arm, and the third blade arm each include a blade angle actuator configured to independently angulate the first, second, and third blades, respectively, wherein each blade angle actuator is located on its respective blade arm between the blade and the frame portion; and wherein in a first position, at least a portion of the first and second blades contact each other and in a second position, the first and second blades do not contact each other.

The surgical retractor system of claim 1 , wherein the first blade is attached to the first blade arm extending from the frame portion, the second blade is attached to the second blade arm extending from the frame portion, and the third blade is attached to the third blade arm extending from the frame portion.

3. The surgical retractor system of claim 2 , wherein the third arm and the fixed plate form a dove-tailed connection.

4. The surgical retractor system of claim 1 , wherein the first linear actuator and the second linear actuator are each part of a rack and pinion system.

5. The surgical retractor system of claim 1 , wherein rotation of the carriage actuator causes linear translation of the first blade and the second blade, and rotation of the third blade actuator causes linear translation of the third blade.

6. The surgical retractor system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first blade, second blade and third blade comprises a docking pin sleeve for receiving a docking pin therethrough.

7. The surgical retractor system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first blade, second blade and third blade comprises a slot for receiving a lengthening or widening shim therethrough.

A surgical retractor system comprising: a fixed plate having opposing upper and lower surfaces; a moveable carriage positioned on the lower surface of the fixed plate and configured to move inwardly and outwardly with respect to the fixed plate in an anterior/posterior direction; a first blade attached to a first blade arm having a first blade arm longitudinal axis, the first blade arm operably attached to one side of the moveable carriage; a second blade attached to a second blade arm having a second blade arm longitudinal axis, the second blade arm operably attached to an opposing side of the moveable carriage; a third blade attached to a third blade arm with a third blade arm longitudinal axis, the third blade arm extending through the fixed plate along a central portion thereof; wherein movement of the moveable carriage in the anterior/posterior direction causes translation of the first blade and the second blade in the anterior/posterior direction, wherein the upper surface of the fixed plate includes a carriage actuator for linearly translating the first and second blades in the anterior/posterior direction, a first linear actuator for independently linearly translating the first blade arm along the first arm longitudinal axis in a medial/lateral direction, a second linear actuator for independently linearly translating the second blade arm along the second arm longitudinal axis in the medial/lateral direction, and a third linear actuator for independently linearly translating the third blade arm along the third arm longitudinal axis in the medial/lateral direction; wherein the first blade arm, the second blade arm, and the third blade arms each include a blade angle actuator configured to independently angulate the first, second, and third blades, respectively, wherein each blade angle actuator is located on its respective blade arm between the blade and the frame portion.

9. The surgical retractor system of claim 8 , wherein the arm forms a dove-tail connection with the fixed plate.
