Abstract

Disclosed herein are material composition formulated for mitigating activity of a virus on a surface of an article. Methods of preparing such a material composition are also disclosed.

Claims (66)

1. A method for reducing microbial growth in an uncured polymeric coating material during storage prior to curing, comprising:

admixing an antibiological additive with the uncured polymeric coating material to provide an antibiological-functionalized coating material, wherein the antibiological additive comprises an antibiological peptidic biomolecule and a reactive oxygen based compound producing biomolecule; and wherein the uncured polymeric coating material is at least one selected from a coating, a plastic, an elastomer, a composite, a laminate, an adhesive, a sealant and a textile finish, wherein the antibiological peptidic biomolecule comprises SEQ. ID NO: 40, wherein the reactive oxygen based compound producing biomolecule is selected from the group consisting of: a lactoferrin, a peroxidase, a glucose oxidase, a laccase, and any combination thereof.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the antibiological additive further comprises a small molecule selected from the group consisting of: citral, monolaurin, and any combination thereof.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the antibiological additive is admixed within the uncured polymeric coating material at a concentration sufficient to enable the antibiological-functionalized coating material to provide a functionalized level of microbial metabolic activity for at least one target microorganism within the antibiological-functionalized coating material that is at least 60% less than a baseline level of microbial metabolic activity for the at least one target microorganism within the uncured polymeric coating material.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising:

storing at least a portion of the antibiological-functionalized coating material within a container such that the functionalized level of microbial metabolic activity of the antibiological-functionalized coating material promotes shelflife performance of the antibiological-functionalized coating material by suppressing growth of the at least one target microorganism within the antibiological-functionalized coating material while stored within the container.

The method of claim 3 , wherein the at least one target microorganism is selected from the group consisting of: Alcaligenes faecalis, Aspergillus sp., Bacillus cereus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Fusarium oxysporium, Microbacterium paraoxydans, Micrococcus lysodeikticus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas alcaliphila, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas oleovorans, Pseudomonas putida, Stenotrophomonas maltophila , and any combination thereof.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the uncured polymeric coating material comprises an acrylic latex.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein a non-biobased antibiological substance is not added to the uncured polymeric coating material when producing the antibiological-functionalized coating material.

8. A method for reducing microbial growth in an uncured polymeric coating material, the method comprising:

applying an antibiological-functionalized coating material to a surface, the antibiological-functionalized coating material comprising an uncured polymeric coating material and an antibiological additive, wherein the antibiological additive comprises an antibiological peptidic biomolecule and a reactive oxygen based compound producing biomolecule, wherein the reactive oxygen based compound producing biomolecule is selected from the group consisting of: a lactoferrin, a peroxidase, a glucose oxidase, a laccase, and any combination thereof, and wherein the uncured polymeric coating material is at least one selected from a coating, a plastic, an elastomer, a composite, a laminate, an adhesive, a sealant, and a textile finish; and

curing the uncured polymeric coating material to produce cured film layer comprising a cured polymeric material and the antibiological additive, wherein the antibiological peptidic biomolecule comprises SEQ. ID NO: 40.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the antibiological additive further comprises a small molecule selected from the group consisting of: citral, monolaurin, and any combination thereof.

The method of claim 8 , wherein the antibiological additive is admixed within the uncured polymeric coating material at a concentration sufficient to enable the antibiological-functionalized coating material to provide a functionalized level of microbial metabolic activity for at least one target microorganism within the antibiological-functionalized coating material that is at least 60% less than a baseline level of microbial metabolic activity for the at least one target microorganism within the uncured polymeric coating material.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the uncured polymeric coating material comprises an acrylic latex.

12. An antibiological-functionalized coating material effective in reducing microbial growth in an uncured polymeric coating material, the antibiological-functionalized coating material comprising:

uncured polymeric coating material that is at least one selected from a coating, a plastic, an elastomer, a composite, a laminate, an adhesive, a sealant and a textile finish; and

an antibiological additive comprising an antibiological peptidic biomolecule and a reactive oxygen based compound producing biomolecule,

wherein the reactive oxygen based compound producing biomolecule is selected from the group consisting of: a lactoferrin, a peroxidase, a glycose oxidase, a laccase, and any combination thereof, and

wherein the antibiological peptidic biomolecule comprises SEQ. ID NO: 40.

13. The antibiological-functionalized coating material of claim 12 , wherein the antibiological additive further comprises a small molecule selected from the group consisting of: citral, monolaurin, and any combination thereof.

The antibiological-functionalized coating material of claim 12 , wherein the antibiological additive is present within the uncured polymeric coating material at a concentration sufficient to enable the antibiological-functionalized coating material to provide a functionalized level of microbial metabolic activity for at least one target microorganism within the antibiological-functionalized coating material that is at least 60% less than a baseline level of microbial metabolic activity for the at least one target microorganism within the uncured polymeric coating material.

15. The antibiological-functionalized coating material of claim 12 , wherein the uncured polymeric coating material is a coating that is a latex paint, an acrylic paint, or a water-based latex paint.

The antibiological-functionalized coating material of claim 14 , wherein the at least one target microorganism is selected from the group consisting of: Alcaligenes faecalis, Aspergillus sp., Bacillus cereus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Fusarium oxysporium, Microbacterium paraoxydans, Micrococcus lysodeikticus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas alcaliphila, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas oleovorans, Pseudomonas putida, Stenotrophomonas maltophila , and any combination thereof.

17. A method for reducing microbial growth in an uncured polymeric coating material during storage prior to curing, comprising:

admixing an antibiological additive with the uncured polymeric coating material to provide an antibiological-functionalized coating material, wherein the antibiological additive is admixed within the uncured polymeric coating material at a concentration sufficient to enable the antibiological-functionalized coating material to provide a functionalized level of microbial metabolic activity for at least one target microorganism within the antibiological-functionalized coating material that is at least 60% less than a baseline level of microbial metabolic activity for the at least one target microorganism within the uncured polymeric coating material; wherein the antibiological additive comprises an antibiological peptidic biomolecule and a reactive oxygen based compound producing biomolecule; wherein the reactive oxygen based compound producing biomolecule is selected from the group consisting of: a lactoferrin, a peroxidase, a glucose oxidase, a laccase, and any combination thereof, and wherein the uncured polymeric coating material is at least one selected from a coating, a plastic, an elastomer, a composite, a laminate, an adhesive, a sealant and a textile finish, and wherein the uncured polymeric coating material comprises an acrylic latex.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the antibiological additive further comprises a small molecule selected from the group consisting of: citral, monolaurin, and any combination thereof.

19. The method of claim 17 , further comprising:

storing at least a portion of the antibiological-functionalized coating material within a container such that the functionalized level of microbial metabolic activity of the antibiological-functionalized coating material promotes shelflife performance of the antibiological-functionalized coating material by suppressing growth of the at least one target microorganism within the antibiological-functionalized coating material while stored within the container.

The method of claim 17 , wherein the at least one target microorganism is selected from the group consisting of: Alcaligenes faecalis, Aspergillus sp., Bacillus cereus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Fusarium oxysporium, Microbacterium paraoxydans, Micrococcus lysodeikticus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas alcaliphila, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas oleovorans, Pseudomonas putida, Stenotrophomonas maltophila , and any combination thereof.

21. The method of claim 17 , wherein a non-biobased antibiological substance is not added to the uncured polymeric coating material when producing the antibiological-functionalized coating material.

22. A method for reducing microbial growth in an uncured polymeric coating material, the method comprising:

applying an antibiological-functionalized coating material to a surface, the antibiological-functionalized coating material comprising an uncured polymeric coating material and an antibiological additive, wherein the antibiological additive is admixed within the uncured polymeric coating material at a concentration sufficient to enable the antibiological-functionalized coating material to provide a functionalized level of microbial metabolic activity for at least one target microorganism within the antibiological-functionalized coating material that is at least 60% less than a baseline level of microbial metabolic activity for the at least one target microorganism within the uncured polymeric coating material, wherein the antibiological additive comprises an antibiological peptidic biomolecule and a reactive oxygen based compound producing biomolecule, wherein the reactive oxygen based compound producing biomolecule is selected from the group consisting of: a lactoferrin, a peroxidase, a glucose oxidase, a laccase, and any combination thereof, and wherein the uncured polymeric coating material is at least one selected from a coating, a plastic, an elastomer, a composite, a laminate, an adhesive, a sealant, and a textile finish; and

curing the uncured polymeric coating material to produce cured film layer comprising a cured polymeric material and the antibiological additive, and wherein the uncured polymeric coating material comprises an acrylic latex.

23. The method of claim 22 , wherein the antibiological additive further comprises a small molecule selected from the group consisting of: citral, monolaurin, and any combination thereof.

24. An antibiological-functionalized coating material effective in reducing microbial growth in an uncured polymeric coating material, comprising:

an uncured polymeric coating material that is at least one selected from a coating, a plastic, an elastomer, a composite, a laminate, an adhesive, a sealant and a textile finish; and

an antibiological additive comprising an antibiological peptidic biomolecule, a reactive oxygen based compound producing biomolecule, and a small molecule,

wherein the small molecule is selected from the group consisting of: citral, monolaurin, and any combination thereof, and

wherein the antibiological peptidic biomolecule comprises SEQ. ID NO: 40.

25. The antibiological-functionalized coating material of claim 24 , wherein the uncured polymeric coating material is a coating that is a latex paint, an acrylic paint, or a water-based latex paint.

The antibiological-functionalized coating material of claim 24 , wherein the antibiological additive is present within the uncured polymeric coating material at a concentration sufficient to enable the antibiological-functionalized coating material to provide a functionalized level of microbial metabolic activity for at least one target microorganism within the antibiological-functionalized coating material that is at least 60% less than a baseline level of microbial metabolic activity for the at least one target microorganism within the uncured polymeric coating material.

The antibiological-functionalized coating material of claim 26 , wherein the at least one target microorganism is selected from the group consisting of: Alcaligenes faecalis, Aspergillus sp., Bacillus cereus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Fusarium oxysporium, Microbacterium paraoxydans, Micrococcus lysodeikticus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas alcaliphila, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas oleovorans, Pseudomonas putida, Stenotrophomonas maltophila , and any combination thereof.

28. An antibiological-functionalized coating material effective in reducing microbial growth in an uncured polymeric coating material, the antibiological-functionalized coating material comprising:

uncured polymeric coating material that is at least one selected from a coating, a plastic, an elastomer, a composite, a laminate, an adhesive, a sealant and a textile finish; and

an antibiological additive comprising an antibiological peptidic biomolecule and a reactive oxygen based compound producing biomolecule, wherein the antibiological additive is present within the uncured polymeric coating material at a concentration sufficient to enable the antibiological-functionalized coating material to provide a functionalized level of microbial metabolic activity for at least one target microorganism within the antibiological-functionalized coating material that is at least 60% less than a baseline level of microbial metabolic activity for the at least one target microorganism within the uncured polymeric coating material,

wherein the reactive oxygen based compound producing biomolecule is selected from the group consisting of: a lactoferrin, a peroxidase, a glycose oxidase, a laccase, and any combination thereof, and

wherein the uncured polymeric coating material comprises an acrylic latex.

29. The antibiological-functionalized coating material of claim 28 , wherein the antibiological additive further comprises a small molecule selected from the group consisting of: citral, monolaurin, and any combination thereof.

30. A method for reducing microbial growth in an uncured polymeric coating material, the method comprising:

applying an antibiological-functionalized coating material to a surface, the antibiological-functionalized coating material comprising an uncured polymeric coating material and an antibiological additive, wherein the antibiological additive comprises an antibiological peptidic biomolecule, a reactive oxygen based compound producing biomolecule, and a small molecule, wherein the small molecule is selected from the group consisting of: citral, monolaurin, and any combination thereof, and wherein the uncured polymeric coating material is at least one selected from a coating, a plastic, an elastomer, a composite, a laminate, an adhesive, a sealant, and a textile finish; and

curing the uncured polymeric coating material to produce cured film layer comprising a cured polymeric material and the antibiological additive, wherein the antibiological peptidic biomolecule comprises SEQ. ID NO: 40.

31. The method of claim 30 , wherein the uncured polymeric coating material comprises an acrylic latex.

32. A method for reducing microbial growth in an uncured polymeric coating material during storage prior to curing, comprising:

admixing an antibiological additive with the uncured polymeric coating material to provide an antibiological-functionalized coating material, wherein the antibiological additive is admixed within the uncured polymeric coating material at a concentration sufficient to enable the antibiological-functionalized coating material to provide a functionalized level of microbial metabolic activity for at least one target microorganism within the antibiological-functionalized coating material that is at least 60% less than a baseline level of microbial metabolic activity for the at least one target microorganism within the uncured polymeric coating material, wherein the antibiological additive comprises an antibiological peptidic biomolecule, a reactive oxygen based compound producing biomolecule, and a small molecule, wherein the small molecule is selected from the group consisting of: citral, monolaurin, and any combination thereof, and wherein the uncured polymeric coating material is at least one selected from a coating, a plastic, an elastomer, a composite, a laminate, an adhesive, a sealant and a textile finish, and wherein the uncured polymeric coating material comprises an acrylic latex.

33. A method for reducing microbial growth in an uncured polymeric coating material during storage prior to curing, comprising:

admixing an antibiological additive with the uncured polymeric coating material to provide an antibiological-functionalized coating material, wherein the antibiological additive comprises an antibiological peptidic biomolecule and a reactive oxygen based compound producing biomolecule; wherein the reactive oxygen based compound producing biomolecule is selected from the group consisting of: a lactoferrin, a peroxidase, a glucose oxidase, a laccase, and any combination thereof; wherein the uncured polymeric coating material is at least one selected from a coating, a plastic, an elastomer, a composite, a laminate, an adhesive, a sealant and a textile finish; wherein the uncured polymeric coating material comprises an acrylic latex; wherein the antibiological additive is admixed within the uncured polymeric coating material at a concentration sufficient to enable the antibiological-functionalized coating material to provide a functionalized level of microbial metabolic activity for at least one target microorganism within the antibiological-functionalized coating material that is at least 60% less than a baseline level of microbial metabolic activity for the at least one target microorganism within the uncured polymeric coating material; and wherein the at least one target microorganism is selected from the group consisting of: Alcaligenes faecalis, Aspergillus sp., Bacillus cereus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Fusarium oxysporium, Microbacterium paraoxydans, Micrococcus lysodeikticus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas alcaliphila, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas oleovorans, Pseudomonas putida, Stenotrophomonas maltophila , and any combination thereof.

34. A method for reducing microbial growth in an uncured polymeric coating material, the method comprising:

applying an antibiological-functionalized coating material to a surface, the antibiological-functionalized coating material comprising an uncured polymeric coating material and an antibiological additive, wherein the antibiological additive comprises an antibiological peptidic biomolecule, a reactive oxygen based compound producing biomolecule, and a small molecule, wherein the small molecule is selected from the group consisting of: citral, monolaurin, and any combination thereof, and wherein the uncured polymeric coating material is at least one selected from a coating, a plastic, an elastomer, a composite, a laminate, an adhesive, a sealant, and a textile finish, and wherein the antibiological additive is admixed within the uncured polymeric coating material at a concentration sufficient to enable the antibiological-functionalized coating material to provide a functionalized level of microbial metabolic activity for at least one target microorganism within the antibiological-functionalized coating material that is at least 60% less than a baseline level of microbial metabolic activity for the at least one target microorganism within the uncured polymeric coating material; and

curing the uncured polymeric coating material to produce a cured film layer comprising a cured polymeric material and the antibiological additive, and wherein the uncured polymeric coating material comprises an acrylic latex.

35. An antibiological-functionalized coating material effective in reducing microbial growth in an uncured polymeric coating material, the antibiological-functionalized coating material comprising:

an uncured polymeric coating material that is at least one selected from a coating, a plastic, an elastomer, a composite, a laminate, an adhesive, a sealant and a textile finish; and

an antibiological additive comprises an antibiological peptidic biomolecule, a reactive oxygen based compound producing biomolecule, and a small molecule,

wherein the antibiological additive is present within the uncured polymeric coating material at a concentration sufficient to enable the antibiological-functionalized coating material to provide a functionalized level of microbial metabolic activity for at least one target microorganism within the antibiological-functionalized coating material that is at least 60% less than a baseline level of microbial metabolic activity for the at least one target microorganism within the uncured polymeric coating material,

wherein the small molecule is selected from the group consisting of: citral, monolaurin, and any combination thereof, and

wherein the uncured polymeric coating material comprises an acrylic latex.
