Abstract

A method is provided for testing for presence of a biological particulate, the method including collecting, in a tube of an apparatus, biological fluid that potentially contains the biological particulate, the tube having (a) an upstream proximal opening and (b) a distal end that is permanently closed. A plunger of the apparatus is inserted into the tube via the upstream proximal opening. The plunger is advanced within the tube while sealably contacting the tube, so as to push the biological fluid through a filter and into a fluid-collection compartment of the apparatus. The method includes subsequently testing for the presence of the biological particulate that was trapped by the filter as the biological fluid in the tube was pushed through the filter. Other embodiments are also described.

Claims (28)

1. A method for testing for presence of a biological particulate, the method comprising:

collecting, in a tube of an apparatus, biological fluid that potentially contains the biological particulate, the tube having (a) an upstream proximal opening and (b) a distal end that is permanently closed;

inserting a plunger of the apparatus into the tube via the upstream proximal opening;

advancing the plunger within the tube while sealably contacting the tube, so as to push the biological fluid through a filter and into a fluid-collection compartment of the apparatus; and

subsequently, testing for the presence of the biological particulate that was trapped by the filter as the biological fluid in the tube was pushed through the filter.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein testing for the presence of the biological particulate comprises testing for the presence of the biological particulate while the plunger remains advanced in the tube.

3. The method according to claim 1 ,

wherein advancing the plunger within the tube while sealably contacting the tube pushes the biological fluid through the filter and traps the biological fluid in the fluid-collection compartment, and

wherein testing for the presence of the biological particulate comprises testing for the presence of the biological particulate while the biological fluid is trapped in the fluid-collection compartment.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the filter is coupled to a distal end of the plunger, and wherein the plunger is shaped so as to define the fluid-collection compartment.

5. The method according to claim 3 , wherein testing for the presence of the biological particulate comprises testing for the presence of the biological particulate while the plunger remains advanced in the tube and while the biological fluid is trapped in the fluid-collection compartment.

6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the filter is coupled to a distal end of the plunger, and wherein the plunger is shaped so as to define the fluid-collection compartment.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the filter is coupled to a distal end of the plunger, and wherein the plunger is shaped so as to define the fluid-collection compartment.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the filter is disposed in the tube, and wherein the tube is shaped so as to define the fluid-collection compartment distal to the filter.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the tube and the plunger are configured such that, following the plunger being maximally advanced within the tube, the plunger is withdrawable from the tube only by use of a tool or by breaking a portion of the apparatus.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein testing for presence of the biological particulate trapped by the filter comprises applying an extraction solution to the filter.

11. The method according to claim 10 ,

wherein the extraction solution includes a releasing agent configured to release an antigen from the biological particulate, and

wherein testing for presence of the biological particulate trapped by the filter comprises testing for presence of the antigen.

12. The method according to claim 1 , wherein collecting the biological fluid in the tube comprises collecting gargled fluid in the tube.

13. The method according to claim 1 , wherein collecting the biological fluid in the tube comprises collecting in the tube a sample selected from the group consisting of: saliva, blood, urine, stool, gastrointestinal fluid, and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid.

14. The method according to claim 1 , wherein testing for presence of the biological particulate trapped by the filter comprises testing for presence of a biological particulate selected from the group consisting of: a microorganism, a fungus, a bacteria, a spore, a virus, a mite, a biological cell, a biological antigen, a protein, a protein antigen, and a carbohydrate antigen.

15. The method according to claim 14 , wherein testing for presence of the biological particulate trapped by the filter comprises testing for presence of the microorganism.

16. The method according to claim 14 , wherein testing for presence of the biological particulate trapped by the filter comprises testing for presence of the bacteria.

17. The method according to claim 16 , wherein testing for presence of a bacteria trapped by the filter comprises testing for presence of a streptococcus bacteria.

18. The method according to claim 14 , wherein testing for presence of the biological particulate trapped by the filter comprises testing for presence of the virus.

19. The method according to claim 14 , wherein testing for presence of the biological particulate trapped by the filter comprises testing for presence of the biological cell.

20. The method according to claim 19 , wherein testing for presence of the biological cell trapped by the filter comprises testing for presence of a cancerous cell.
