Abstract

Electrostimulation systems and methods are contemplated in which a high current level, charge balanced alternating current electrical signal is generated for delivery to the cortex region of a patient's brain for treating opioid use disorder and substance use disorder. By stimulating this region of the brain with a charged balanced stimulation current with a stimulation current envelope defining one or more series of pulses at particular frequencies and durations designed to evoke metabolic response in the neurons, significant improvements in efficacy and reductions in patient discomfort may be achieved relative to earlier methods of transcranial electrical stimulation. Further advantages, especially in promoting neural entrainment, may be realized as well via utilizing multiple series of pulses at different frequencies, and via the dynamic adjustment of the stimulation waveform via incorporation of feedback signals in order to maintain charge balance in real-time.

Claims (12)

1. A method for treating a patient in need thereof for opioid use disorder and substance use disorder, the method comprising:

generating a stimulation current via the steps of:

generating a carrier waveform, the carrier waveform being an alternating current having a duty cycle ratio and a current amplitude ratio, the duty cycle ratio and the current amplitude ratio being selected such that each respective integration of the current amplitude between successive time instances at which the carrier waveform alternates polarity is equivalent; and

generating a first stimulation current from the carrier waveform via amplitude modulating the carrier waveform, the extremes of the first stimulation current defining a first stimulation current envelope, the first stimulation current envelope defining a first series of pulses occurring at a first frequency between 4 Hz and 100 Hz;

generating a second stimulation current from the carrier waveform via amplitude modulating the carrier waveform, the extremes of the second stimulation current defining a second stimulation current envelope, the second stimulation current envelope defining a second series of pulses occurring at a second frequency between 4 Hz and 100 Hz that differs from the first frequency;

conveying the first stimulation current through the patient's skin to the cortex region of the brain of the patient using one or more active electrodes and one or more reference electrodes applied to the patient's head during a first portion of a treatment duration;

conveying the second stimulation current through the patient's skin to the cortex region of the brain of the patient using the one or more active electrodes and the one or more reference electrodes applied to the patient's head during a second portion of the treatment duration following the first portion;

measuring the first stimulation current and the second stimulation current at the patient by the one or more reference electrodes;

dynamically adjusting one or more parameters of the carrier waveform in real time with the generation of the first stimulation current according to a feedback signal based upon an electrode contact impedance determined from the measured first stimulation current in order to maintain charge balance of the first stimulation current in real time; and

dynamically adjusting one or more parameters of the carrier waveform in real time with the generation of the second stimulation current according to a feedback signal based upon an electrode contact impedance determined from the measured second stimulation current in order to maintain charge balance of the second stimulation current in real time.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the carrier waveform has a frequency of 100 KHz.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the carrier waveform is a rectangular wave.
