Abstract

An apparatus embedded with one or more terahertz transceivers is described. The one or more terahertz transceivers based on at least Gunn diode are provided to facilitate wireless communication in the apparatus, where the apparatus is embedded with one or more planar antennas. The transceiver operates in terahertz and may be coupled to one or two different antennas, one for transmission and the other for reception.

Claims (35)

1. An apparatus communicating wirelessly with a remote device, the apparatus comprising:

an antenna set;

one or more terahertz transceivers coupled to the antenna set to exchange signals with the remote device in one or more predefined frequency bands, wherein each of the terahertz transceivers comprises:

an oscillator including at least one Gunn diode, wherein an electric field across an active layer in the Gunn diode is established when a voltage is applied across the Gunn diode, a size of the active layer facilitates to determine an operating frequency of the oscillator;

a slot antenna, coupled to the oscillator, generating a standing wave of electromagnetic field as a resonator to output a resonant signal in accordance with the operating frequency;

a band filter to process the resonant signal and output a terahertz (THz) signal after amplified;

a local oscillator receiving the THz signal and producing a reference signal; and

an I/O mixer provided to modulate the reference signal with a signal.

2. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein the active layer is an epitaxial layer grown on a degenerate n+ substrate to form three n-type semiconductor layers.

3. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein the antenna set includes a first antenna and a second antenna, the first antenna and second antenna are in different forms, one for transmission and the other for reception.

4. The apparatus as recited in claim 3 , wherein at least one of the first and second antennas is planar.

5. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

at least one microdisplay generating optical images;

a display device receiving the optical images coupled in via at least a lens; and

an electronic portion, providing control signals and various data to drive the microdisplay, coupled to the terahertz transceivers that facilitates wireless communication between the apparatus and the remote device.

6. The apparatus as recited in claim 5 , further comprising:

an interface to receive signal to drive the electronic portion or output data signal from the electronic portion.

7. The apparatus as recited in claim 6 , wherein the interface is based upon a USB Type-C.

8. An apparatus communicating wirelessly with a remote device, the apparatus comprising:

an antenna set;

one or more terahertz transceivers coupled to the antenna set to exchange signals with the remote device in one or more predefined frequency bands, wherein each of the terahertz transceivers comprises:

an oscillator including at least one Gunn diode, wherein an electric field across an active layer in the Gunn diode is established when a voltage is applied across the Gunn diode, a size of the active layer facilitates to determine an operating frequency of the oscillator;

a slot antenna, coupled to the Gunn diode, forming a standing wave of electromagnetic field as a resonator to output a resonant signal in the predefined resonant frequency;

a band filter to process the resonant signal and output a terahertz (THz) signal after amplified;

a local oscillator receiving the THz signal and produce a reference signal; and

an I/O mixer provided to modulate the reference signal with a signal.

9. The apparatus as recited in claim 8 , wherein the antenna set includes a first antenna and a second antenna, the first antenna and second antenna are in different forms, one for transmission and the other for reception.

10. The apparatus as recited in claim 9 , wherein at least one of the first and second antennas is planar.

11. The apparatus as recited in claim 8 , further comprising:

at least one microdisplay generating optical images;

a display device receiving the optical images coupled in via at least a lens;

an electronic portion, providing control signals and various data to drive the microdisplay, coupled to the terahertz transceivers that facilitates wireless communication between the apparatus and the remote device.

12. The apparatus as recited in claim 11 , further comprising:

an interface to receive signal to drive the electronic portion or output data signal from the electronic portion.

13. The apparatus as recited in claim 12 , wherein the interface is based upon a USB Type-C.
