Abstract

Disclosed is determining GNSS satellite position visibility by possessing an orbital segment representing the transit of a satellite in orbit over time, a coarse ray angle interval, a fine ray angle interval, and a digital surface model. Disclosed is propagating coarse ray at coarse ray angle intervals increments in a first pass between an observable point and orbital segment at a respective coarse ray angle to determine whether the coarse ray is obstructed by features of the DSM, and recording a status of the coarse ray based on whether the coarse ray was obstructed. If pairs of successive coarse rays have different status, designating the coarse ray with NLOS visibility, then performing a second pass by propagating, per each designated coarse ray, fine rays at fine ray angle intervals, and saving an indication of time at which LOS visibility to the satellite is obstructed.

Claims (59)

1. A method of determining visible GNSS satellite positions in a satellite orbit by a ray-based model, the method comprising:

possessing an orbital segment representing the transit of a satellite in orbit over time;

possessing a coarse ray angle interval;

possessing a fine ray angle interval;

possessing a Digital Surface Model (DSM);

performing a first pass, for each coarse ray angle interval in the orbital segment, by:

propagating a coarse ray between a Valid Observable Point (VOP) and points on the orbital segment at a respective coarse ray angle to determine whether the coarse ray is obstructed by features of the DSM, and

recording a status of the coarse ray with LOS visibility or NLOS visibility based on whether the coarse ray was obstructed;

for each pair of successive coarse rays in the first pass,

if the successive coarse rays have different status,

then designating the coarse ray with NLOS visibility; and

performing a second pass, by:

propagating, with respect to each designated coarse ray, fine rays between the VOP and points on the orbital segment at fine ray angle intervals, and

saving results from the second pass, including an indication of a time at which the LOS to the satellite becomes obstructed.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the orbital segment was determined based on factors of curvature of Earth, terrain, satellite elevation/azimuth.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fine ray angle interval is based on the change in satellite position per temporal second.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the status of a coarse ray is saved if it has LOS.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the status of a coarse ray is saved if it has NLOS.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein for each of the designated coarse rays, the fine rays are incrementally traced or cast, starting from the coarse ray of successive coarse rays that is NLOS, at increments of the fine ray angular interval until either a LOS fine ray is determined or until the sum of fine ray angles exceeds the coarse ray angular increment.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein as part of the second pass, fine rays are propagated on both sides of the coarse ray with NLOS.

8. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium impressed with computer program instructions to determine visible GNSS satellite positions in a satellite orbit by a ray-based model, the instructions, when executed on a processor, implement a method comprising:

possessing an orbital segment representing the transit of a satellite in orbit over time;

possessing a coarse ray angle interval;

possessing a fine ray angle interval;

possessing a Digital Surface Model (DSM);

performing a first pass, for each coarse ray angle interval in the orbital segment, by:

propagating a coarse ray between a Valid Observable Point (VOP) and points on the orbital segment at a respective coarse ray angle to determine whether the coarse ray is obstructed by features of the DSM, and

recording a status of the coarse ray with LOS visibility or NLOS visibility based on whether the coarse ray was obstructed;

for each pair of successive coarse rays in the first pass,

if the successive coarse rays have different status,

then designating the coarse ray with NLOS visibility; and

performing a second pass, by:

propagating, with respect to each designated coarse ray, fine rays between the VOP and points on the orbital segment at fine ray angle intervals, and

saving results from the second pass, including an indication of a time at which the LOS to the satellite becomes obstructed.

9. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the orbital segment was determined based on factors of curvature of Earth, terrain, satellite elevation/azimuth.

10. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the fine ray angle interval is based on the change in satellite position per temporal second.

11. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the status of a coarse ray is saved if it has LOS.

12. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the status of a coarse ray is saved if it has NLOS.

13. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein for each of the designated coarse rays, the fine rays are incrementally traced or cast, starting from the coarse ray of successive coarse rays that is NLOS, at increments of the fine ray angular interval until either a LOS fine ray is determined or until the sum of fine ray angles exceeds the coarse ray angular increment.

14. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein as part of the second pass, fine rays are propagated on both sides of the coarse ray with NLOS.

15. A system including one or more processors coupled to memory, the memory loaded with computer instructions to represent distant objects for analysis of satellite line-of-sight visibility from a grid of points, the instructions, when executed on the processors, implement actions comprising:

possessing an orbital segment representing the transit of a satellite in orbit over time;
