Abstract

The present invention is for an acidic cleaning composition which has excellent cleaning performance, low toxicity and good antimicrobial efficacy. The inventive acidic cleaning compositions are capable of sanitizing or disinfecting a variety of hard surfaces. The inventive acidic cleaning compositions can take a variety of forms, such as: disinfecting wipes, all-purpose disinfecting sprays, kitchen cleaners, bathroom cleaners, toilet cleaners, etc. The compositions may meet EPA DfE requirements, EPA category III or IV requirements, and/or be safe for use on food contact surfaces without rinsing. The compositions may include citric acid, an anionic surfactant, a non-volatile glycol solvent, a fatty acid, and water. The compositions may be free of other sanitizing acids, quaternary ammonium compounds, biguanides, peroxides, hypohalites, etc., and have a pH of less than 2.5. The composition may provide sanitization or disinfection against a target microbe within 5 minutes or less, or 4 minutes or less.

Claims (43)

1. A hard surface disinfecting composition that has a score of 4 minutes or greater for an EpiOcular assay (ET50) which measures irritancy potential by exposure time required for the composition to reduce tissue viability to 50% of a set of test controls, while providing at least a 3-log reduction in a Staphylococcus aureus population within 10 minutes or less, the composition comprising:

(a) about 0.1% to about 5% by weight of citric acid;

(b) about 0.01% to about 1% by weight of an anionic surfactant comprising at least one of an alkyl sulfate or an alkyl sulfonate;

(c) about 0.2% to about 5% by weight of one or more non-volatile glycol solvents;

(d) about 0.0001% to about 0.02% by weight of a fatty acid;

(e) an alkylpolyglucoside nonionic surfactant; and

(f) water, wherein the pH of the composition is less than 2.5.

2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition includes no additional disinfectant or sanitizer including: other carboxylic acids having 4 or less carbon atoms, quaternary ammonium antimicrobials, biguanides, peroxides, hypochlorites, or bleaching agents.

3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition further includes one or more adjuvants selected from the group consisting of: fragrances or perfumes, waxes, dyes, colorants, nonionic surfactants, solubilizing materials, stabilizers, thickeners, defoamers, hydrotropes, pH adjusters, buffers, builders, lotions, mineral oils, cloud point modifiers, polymers, or preservatives.

4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the one or more non-volatile glycol solvents includes a propylene glycol.

5. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the anionic surfactant comprises at least one of an alkyl sulfate or a secondary alkyl sulfonate.

6. The composition of claim 5 , wherein the composition comprises the secondary alkyl sulfonate, the alkyl of the secondary alkyl sulfonate having from 6 to 18 carbon atoms.

7. The composition of claim 5 , wherein the anionic surfactant in the composition comprises sodium lauryl sulfate.

8. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is safe for use on food contact surfaces and does not necessitate an aqueous rinse of a treated surface.

9. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises at least 95% water by weight.

(a) about 0.1% to about 5% by weight of citric acid;

(b) about 0.01% to about 0.8% by weight of an anionic surfactant comprising at least one of an alkyl sulfate or an alkyl sulfonate;

(c) about 0.5% to about 4% by weight of one or more non-volatile glycol solvents;

(d) about 0.0001% to about 0.02% by weight of a fatty acid;

(e) an alkylpolyglucoside nonionic surfactant; and

(f) water, wherein the pH of the composition is less than 2.5, and the composition is safe for use on food contact surfaces and does not necessitate an aqueous rinse of a treated surface.

11. The composition of claim 10 , wherein the composition further includes one or more adjuvants selected from the group consisting of: waxes, dyes, colorants, nonionic surfactants, solubilizing materials, stabilizers, thickeners, defoamers, hydrotropes, pH adjusters, buffers, builders, lotions, mineral oils, cloud point modifiers, polymers, or preservatives.

12. The composition of claim 10 , wherein the one or more non-volatile glycol solvents includes a propylene glycol.

13. The composition of claim 10 , wherein the anionic surfactant comprises at least one of an alkyl sulfate or secondary alkyl sulfonate.

14. The composition of claim 13 , wherein the anionic surfactant in the composition comprises sodium lauryl sulfate.

15. A dilutable disinfecting composition providing at least a 5-log reduction in a Staphylococcus aureus population within 1 minute or less, the composition consisting of:

(a) about 0.1% to about 5% by weight of citric acid;

(b) about 0.01% to about 0.8% by weight of an anionic surfactant comprising at least one of an alkyl sulfate or an alkyl sulfonate;

(c) about 0.2% to about 5% by weight propylene glycol solvent;

(d) about 0.0001% to about 0.02% by weight of a fatty acid;

(e) an alkylpolyglucoside nonionic surfactant;

(f) a fragrance;

(g) water, and
