Abstract

This disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatus for controlling transitions in an optically switchable device. In one aspect, a controller for a tintable window may include a processor, an input for receiving output signals from sensors, and instructions for causing the processor to determine a level of tint of the tintable window, and an output for controlling the level of tint in the tintable window. The instructions may include a relationship between the received output signals and the level of tint, with the relationship employing output signals from an exterior photosensor, an interior photosensor, an occupancy sensor, an exterior temperature sensor, and a transmissivity sensor. In some instances, the controller may receive output signals over a network and/or be interfaced with a network, and in some instances, the controller may be a standalone controller that is not interfaced with a network.

Claims (33)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, at a higher level controller of a building network of distributed controllers, output signals from one or more exterior photosensors associated with the building network comprising a plurality of window controllers configured to provide instructions to a plurality of tintable windows in a building;

determining a level of tint for at least one tintable window of the plurality of tintable windows based at least in part on an output signal from the one or more exterior photosensors,

wherein the one or more exterior photosensors are configured to detect a light level associated with the building, which light level changes with the weather; and

causing at least one window controller of the plurality of window controllers to cause the at least one tintable window to transition to the determined level of tint, wherein the higher level controller is communicatively coupled to the at least one window controller.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the light level detected by the one or more exterior photosensors is lower on cloudy days than on cloudless days.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more exterior photosensors are disposed on a roof of the building.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the level of tint is determined based at least in part on scheduling information comprising time of year and/or time of day information for the building.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the scheduling information further comprises geographical information comprising a latitude and a longitude of the building.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the scheduling information further comprises geographical information comprising a geographical direction the at least one tintable window is facing.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tintable window comprises multiple tintable windows within a same zone of the building, and wherein the zone of the building is based on a geographical facing direction of the multiple tintable windows within the same zone of the building.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein at least two of the multiple tintable windows within the same zone of the building are controlled by a same window controller of the plurality of window controllers.

9. A system comprising:

at least one higher level controller of a building network of distributed controllers configured to:

receive output signals from one or more exterior photosensors associated with the building network comprising a plurality of window controllers configured to provide instructions to a plurality of tintable windows in a building;

determine a level of tint for at least one tintable window of the plurality of tintable windows based at least in part on an output signal from the one or more exterior photosensors,

wherein the one or more exterior photosensors are configured to detect a light level associated with the building, which light level changes with the weather; and

cause at least one window controller of the plurality of window controllers to cause the at least one tintable window to transition to the determined level of tint, wherein the higher level controller is communicatively coupled to the at least one window controller.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the light level detected by the one or more exterior photosensors is lower on cloudy days than on cloudless days.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the one or more exterior photosensors are disposed on a roof of the building.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the level of tint is determined based at least in part on scheduling information comprising time of year and/or time of day information for the building.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the scheduling information further comprises geographical information comprising a latitude and a longitude of the building.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the scheduling information further comprises geographical information comprising a geographical direction the at least one tintable window is facing.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one tintable window comprises multiple tintable windows within a same zone of the building, and wherein the zone of the building is based on a geographical facing direction of the multiple tintable windows within the same zone of the building.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein at least two of the multiple tintable windows within the same zone of the building are controlled by a same window controller of the plurality of window controllers.

17. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising program instructions for controlling a facility, the non-transitory computer-readable program instructions, when read by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to execute operations comprising:

receive, at a higher level controller of a building network of distributed controllers, output signals from one or more exterior photosensors associated with the building network comprising a plurality of window controllers configured to provide instructions to a plurality of tintable windows in a building;

determine a level of tint for at least one tintable window of the plurality of tintable windows based at least in part on an output signal from the one or more exterior photosensors,

wherein the one or more exterior photosensors are configured to detect a light level associated with the building, which light level changes with the weather; and

cause at least one window controller of the plurality of window controllers to cause the at least one tintable window to transition to the determined level of tint, wherein the higher level controller is communicatively coupled to the at least one window controller.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising program instructions of claim 17 , wherein the light level detected by the one or more exterior photosensors is lower on cloudy days than on cloudless days.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising program instructions of claim 17 , wherein the one or more exterior photosensors are disposed on a roof of the building.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising program instructions of claim 17 , wherein the level of tint is determined based at least in part on scheduling information comprising time of year and/or time of day information for the building.
