Abstract

Automated pipetting systems and methods are disclosed for aspirating and dispensing fluids, particularly biological samples. In one aspect, a liquid dispenser includes a manifold and one or more pipette channels. The manifold includes a vacuum channel, a pressure channel, and a plurality of lanes. Each lane includes an electrical connector, a port to the pressure channel, and a port to the vacuum channel. The pipette channels can be modular. Each pipette channel includes a single dispense head and can be selectively and independently coupled to any one lane of the plurality of lanes. In some aspects, a valve in the pipette channel is in simultaneous fluid communication with a pressure port and a vacuum port of the manifold. The valve selectively diverts gas under pressure and gas under vacuum to the dispense head in response to control signals received through the electrical connector of the manifold.

Claims (51)

1. A system comprising:

a manifold comprising:

a pressure channel,

a vacuum channel,

a plurality of pressure cross-channels connected with the pressure channel, and

a plurality of vacuum cross-channels connected with the vacuum channel;

a plurality of pipette channels, each pipette channel of the plurality of pipette channels comprising:

a single dispense head,

a pressure port connected with the single dispense head,

a vacuum port connected with the single dispense head, and

a magnetic brake connected to the single dispense head, wherein the magnetic brake is configured to reduce free-fall of the single dispense head relative to the manifold in the event of loss of electrical signals from the manifold; and

electrical connections configured to transmit electrical signals from the manifold to the plurality of pipette channels.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein each pipette channel of the plurality of pipette channels comprise a valve connected with the pressure port and the vacuum port.

3. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a pipette tip connected with the single dispense head during aspirate and dispense operations.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a pipette tip connected with the single dispense head during aspirate and dispense operations, wherein the magnetic brake is configured to limit movement of the pipette tip.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a pipette tip connected with the single dispense head during aspirate and dispense operations, wherein the magnetic brake is configured to allow controlled movement of the pipette tip relative to a container.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein each pipette channel of the plurality of pipette channels further comprises a motor connected to the magnetic brake and the single dispense head, wherein a force produced by the magnetic brake is configured to limit downward movement of the single dispense head when the motor stops.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein each pipette channel of the plurality of pipette channels further comprises a motor connected to the magnetic brake and the single dispense head, wherein a force produced by the magnetic brake is configured to limit upward movement of the single dispense head when the motor stops.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein each pipette channel of the plurality of pipette channels is powered independently from other pipette channels of the plurality of pipette channels by the electrical signals transmitted from the electrical connections when the plurality of pipette channels are connected to the manifold.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein each pipette channel of the plurality of pipette channels further comprises a ball screw connected to the single dispense head and configured to move the single dispense head in a vertical direction relative to the manifold.

10. A system comprising:

a manifold comprising:

a pressure channel,

a vacuum channel,

a plurality of pressure cross-channels connected with the pressure channel, and

a plurality of vacuum cross-channels connected with the vacuum channel;

a plurality of pipette channels, each pipette channel of the plurality of pipette channels comprising:

a single dispense head,

a pressure port connected with the single dispense head, and

a vacuum port connected the single dispense head, and

a ball screw connected to the single dispense head and configured to move the single dispense head in a vertical direction relative to the manifold.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein each pipette channel of the plurality of pipette channels further comprises a motor connected to the ball screw, wherein each pipette channel of the plurality of pipette channels comprises a coupling connected to the ball screw.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein each pipette channel of the plurality of pipette channels further comprises a bearing connected to the ball screw.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein each pipette channel of the plurality of pipette channels further comprises a motor connected to the ball screw, and wherein the motor is configured to rotate the ball screw.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein each pipette channel of the plurality of pipette channels further comprises a disc connected to the ball screw, and wherein the ball screw and the disc are rotationally coupled together such that rotation of the ball screw causes rotation of the disc.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the disc further comprises a magnet, and wherein the magnet applies a torque to the ball screw to reduce rotation of the ball screw.

16. A system comprising:

a manifold comprising:

a pressure channel,

a vacuum channel,

a plurality of pressure cross-channels connected with the pressure channel, and

a plurality of vacuum cross-channels connected with the vacuum channel;

a plurality of pipette channels, each pipette channel of the plurality of pipette channels comprising:

a single dispense head,

a pressure port connected with the single dispense head,

a vacuum port connected with the single dispense head,

a motor connected to the single dispense head, and

a pair of discs, wherein the motor overcomes a magnetic force created by a magnetic interaction of the pair of discs to each other during rotation of the motor, wherein the pair of discs are magnetically attracted to each other when the motor stops.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein each pipette channel of the plurality of pipette channels comprises a bearing, wherein the bearing comprises a disc of the pair of discs.

18. The system of claim 16 , wherein each pipette channel of the plurality of pipette channels comprises a ball screw, wherein the ball screw is coupled to a disc of the pair of discs.

19. The system of claim 16 , wherein each pipette channel of the plurality of pipette channels comprises a ball screw, wherein the magnetic force of the pair of discs is configured to apply a torque to the ball screw to reduce rotation of the ball screw.
