Abstract

One example provides a spark plug having a center electrode including a first material and a second material, the second material having a hardness rating greater than a hardness rating of the first material. The center electrode includes an electrode head, wherein at least a portion of the electrode head is disposed beyond an end surface of an insulative nose toward the firing end and has a cross-sectional area perpendicular to an axial centerline greater than a cross-sectional area of the end surface of the insulative nose. The center electrode has a region of first material disposed axially beyond the end surface of the insulative nose, and includes a shield element of the second material which covers exposed surfaces of the region of first material disposed beyond the end surface of the insulative nose. An electrode wire extends from the electrode head into a central bore of the insulative nose.

Claims (39)

1. A spark plug comprising:

a terminal end;

a firing end;

an axial centerline extending between the terminal end and the firing end;

an insulative core extending between the terminal end and the firing end, the insulative core including:

a central bore extending through the insulative core coaxially with the axial centerline; and

an insulative nose at the terminal end, the insulative nose having an end surface; and

a center electrode including:

an electrode wire of a first material disposed within the central bore and having an end portion extending beyond the end surface of the insulative nose at the firing end; and

an electrode head of a second material having a hardness rating greater than the first material, the electrode head coupled to the end portion of the electrode wire and forming a shield element about at least a circumferential perimeter surface of the end portion of the electrode wire.

2. The spark plug of claim 1 , wherein the electrode head, in a direction perpendicular to the axial centerline, has an outer perimeter extending beyond an outer perimeter of the end surface of the insulative nose.

3. The spark plug of claim 2 , wherein the electrode head has a diameter greater than a diameter of the end surface of the insulative nose.

4. The spark plug of claim 3 , wherein the diameter of the electrode head is less than an inner diameter of a ground ring extending about a circumference of the spark plug at the firing end.

5. The spark plug of claim 1 , wherein a perimeter edge of the electrode head forms a spark gap with a ground electrode of the spark plug.

6. The spark plug of claim 5 , wherein the ground electrode is an annular ground electrode and the perimeter edge of the electrode head is a circumferential edge which forms a continuous annular spark gap with the ground electrode.

7. The spark plug of claim 1 , wherein the insulative nose extends between the end surface and a transition to a remaining portion of the insulative core and has hourglass cross-sectional profile where diameters of the insulative nose at the end surface and the transition are greater than diameter of insulative nose there between.

8. The spark plug of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of a bottom surface of the electrode head is disposed flush with the end surface of the insulative nose.

9. A center electrode for a spark plug, comprising:

an axial centerline;

a disc-shaped electrode head disposed coaxially with the axial centerline and having an electrode head bore extending through the electrode head between a top surface and a bottom surface coaxially with the axial centerline; and

an electrode wire extending coaxially with the axial centerline between a first end and a second end, wherein the first end is disposed within the electrode head bore with a remaining portion of the electrode wire extending from the bottom surface of the electrode head to the second end, the electrode head coupled to the electrode wire at the first end, the electrode wire comprising a first material having a first hardness rating and the electrode head comprising a second material having a second hardness rating greater than the first hardness rating such that the electrode head forms a shield about a circumferential perimeter surface of the first end of the electrode wire.

11. The center electrode of claim 10 , wherein the spark edge comprises a circumferential perimeter edge to form an annular spark edge.

12. The spark plug of claim 10 , when employed in the spark plug, an outer perimeter of the electrode head, in a direction perpendicular to the axial centerline, is configured to extend beyond on outer perimeter of an insulative nose at a firing end of the spark plug.

13. A spark plug comprising:

a terminal end;

a firing end;

an axial centerline extending between the terminal end and the firing end;

an insulative core extending between the terminal end and the firing end, the insulative core including:

a central bore extending through the insulative core coaxially with the axial centerline; and

an insulative nose at the terminal end, the insulative nose having an end surface; and

a center electrode including:

an electrode wire disposed within the central bore and having an end portion extending beyond the end surface of the insulative nose at the firing end, the electrode wire comprising a first material having a first hardness rating; and

an electrode head coupled to the end portion of the electrode wire and, in a direction perpendicular to the axial centerline, having an outer perimeter extending beyond an outer perimeter of the end surface of the insulative nose, the electrode head comprising a second material having a second hardness rating greater than the first hardness rating and forming a shield element about a circumferential perimeter surface of the end portion of the electrode wire.

14. The spark plug of claim 13 , wherein the electrode head has a diameter greater than a diameter of the end surface of the insulative nose.

15. The spark plug of claim 13 , wherein a perimeter edge of the electrode head forms a spark gap with a ground electrode of the spark plug.

16. The spark plug of claim 13 , wherein the ground electrode is an annular ground electrode and the perimeter edge of the electrode head is a circumferential edge which forms a continuous annular spark gap with the ground electrode.

17. The spark plug of claim 13 , wherein the insulative nose extends between the end surface and a transition to a remaining portion of the insulative core and has hourglass cross-sectional profile where diameters of the insulative nose at the end surface and the transition are greater than diameter of insulative nose there between.
