Abstract

One aspect provides a method performed by a radio access network node in a telecommunications network. The method comprises: responsive to detection of a trigger event associated with a wireless device having a connection to the telecommunications network via the radio access network node or seeking to establish a connection to the telecommunications network via the radio access network node, transmitting, directly to a user plane core network node, a message initiating establishment of a user-plane tunnel for the connection between the radio access network node and the user plane core network node. The message comprises one or more of: an indication of an identifier of the wireless device; and an indication of an identifier of a session for the wireless device, and further comprises an indication of a downlink tunnel endpoint identifier of the radio access network node.

Claims (38)

1. A radio access network node for a telecommunications network, the radio access node comprising:

processing circuitry; and

a non-transitory machine-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed by the processing circuitry, cause the radio access network node to:

responsive to detection of a trigger event associated with a wireless device having a connection to the telecommunications network via the radio access network node or seeking to establish a connection to the telecommunications network via the radio access network node, transmit, directly to a user plane core network node, a message initiating establishment of a user-plane tunnel for the connection between the radio access network node and the user plane core network node, wherein

the message comprises a first indication of an identifier, wherein the first indication is an indication of an identifier of the wireless device or an indication of an identifier of a session for the wireless device,

the message further comprises an indication of a downlink tunnel endpoint identifier of the radio access network node, and

the first indication of the identifier is different than and separate from the indication of the downlink tunnel identifier.

2. The radio access network node of claim 1 , wherein the message transmitted to the user plane core network node further comprises an indication of a transport layer protocol address for the radio access network node.

3. The radio access network node of claim 1 , wherein the trigger event comprises one or more of: handover of the wireless device from a source radio access network node to the radio access network node; establishment or re-establishment of a session between the wireless device and the radio access network node; transition by the wireless device from an idle or inactive state to an active or connected state.

4. The radio access network node of claim 3 , wherein

the trigger event is handover of the wireless device,

the message transmitted to the user plane core network node is a first message, and

the radio access network node is further caused to transmit a second message to an Access and Mobility Management Function comprising an indication that the wireless device has been handed over to the radio access network node.

5. The radio access network node of claim 4 , wherein the first message and the second message are transmitted in parallel.

6. The radio access network node of claim 1 , wherein the radio access network node is further caused to receive the first indication of the identifier in a message from a core network node.

7. The radio access network node of claim 6 , wherein the core network node is an Access and Mobility Management Function.

8. The radio access network node of claim 1 , wherein the radio access network node is further caused to receive the first indication of the identifier in a message from the source radio access network node.

9. The radio access network node of claim 1 , wherein

the message comprises a header, and

the first indication of the identifier and/or the indication of the downlink tunnel endpoint identifier are contained within the header of the message.

10. The radio access network node of claim 1 , wherein the message transmitted to the user plane core network node comprises an uplink user plane packet.

11. The radio access network node of claim 10 , wherein the uplink user plane packet comprises one or more of: user data; dummy user data; or a control message.

12. The radio access network node of claim 1 , wherein the radio access network node is further caused to select the user plane core network node from a plurality of candidate user plane core network nodes.

13. A user plane core network node for a telecommunications network, the user plane core network node comprising:

processing circuitry; and

a non-transitory machine-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed by the processing circuitry, cause the user plane core network node to:

responsive to detection of a trigger event associated with a wireless device having a connection to the telecommunications network via a radio access network node or seeking to establish a connection to the telecommunications network via the radio access network node, receive a message directly from the radio access network node, the message comprising: i) a first indication of an identifier, wherein the first indication is an indication of an identifier of the wireless device or an indication of an identifier of a session for the wireless device and ii) an indication of a downlink tunnel endpoint identifier of the radio access network node, wherein the first indication of the identifier is different than and separate from the indication of the downlink tunnel identifier; and

use the indication of the downlink tunnel endpoint identifier to establish a downlink user plane tunnel to the radio access network node for a session between the radio access network node and the wireless device.

14. The user plane core network node of claim 13 , wherein the message received from the ran access network node further comprises an indication of a transport layer protocol address for the radio access network node.

15. The user plane core network node of claim 13 , wherein the trigger event comprises one or more of: handover of the wireless device from a source radio access network node to the radio access network node; establishment or re-establishment of a session between the wireless device and the radio access network node; or transition by the wireless device from an inactive state to an active or connected state.

16. The user plane core network node of claim 15 , wherein

the trigger event comprises handover of the wireless device and the user plane core network node is further caused to transmit a message to a Session Management Function (SMF) comprising an indication that the wireless device has been handed over to the radio access network node, or

the trigger event comprises a transition by the wireless device from an inactive state to an active or connected state and the user plane core network node is further caused to transmitting a message to a SMF comprising an indication that the wireless device has transitioned from an inactive state to an active or connected state.

17. The user plane core network node of claim 13 , wherein

the message comprises a header, and

the first indication of the identifier and/or the indication of the downlink tunnel endpoint identifier are contained within the header of the message.

18. The user plane core network node of claim 13 , wherein the message received from the radio access network node comprises an uplink user plane packet.

19. The user plane core network node of claim 18 , wherein the uplink user plane packet comprises one or more of: user data; dummy user data; and a control message.
