Abstract

The disclosed technology generally relates to electrical overstress protection devices, and more particularly to electrical overstress monitoring devices for detecting electrical overstress events in semiconductor devices. In one aspect, an electrical overstress monitor and/or protection device includes a two different conductive structures configured to electrically arc in response to an EOS event and a sensing circuit configured to detect a change in a physical property of the two conductive structures caused by the EOS event. The two conductive structures have facing surfaces that have different shapes.

Claims (33)

1. A health monitoring device comprising:

a flexible substrate configured to conform to a skin portion of a user;

an energy harvesting device integrated with the substrate and configured to harvest energy from one or both of a bodily movement of the user or an electrical overstress (EOS) event, the energy harvesting device comprising a plurality of electricity-generating layers arranged to harvest energy from static electricity caused by the bodily movement;

a storage device integrated with the substrate configured to store energy generated by the energy harvesting device; and

circuitry powered by the storage device and configured for performing one or more of collecting, processing and storing health indicator information of the user.

2. The health monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the energy harvesting device is configured to harvest energy from the bodily movement using the plurality of electricity-generating layers configured to generate charge in response to the bodily movement of the user.

3. The health monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the energy harvesting device is configured to harvest energy from the EOS event using a pair of conductive structures having arcing tips configured to electrically arc in response to the EOS event caused by a bodily movement of the user.

4. The health monitoring device of claim 1 , further comprising conductive vias configured to transfer charge away from the skin portion to the energy harvesting device to build up charge in the plurality of electricity-generating layers.

5. The health monitoring device of claim 1 , further comprising a monitor device configured for monitoring a health indicator and to be electrically powered by the storage device.

6. The health monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the health indicator includes a blood sugar level, a blood pressure, a body temperature, or a level of perspiration of the user.

7. The health monitoring device of claim 3 , wherein the conductive structures are lithographically patterned using a semiconductor fabrication process.

8. The health monitoring device of claim 7 , wherein the conductive structures are fabricated as part of one or more of metallization layers of an integrated circuit device.

9. The health monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the storage device comprises one or more of a battery, a capacitor and a supercapacitor.

10. A wearable device comprising:

a plurality of electricity-generating layers configured to generate charge in response to a bodily movement of a user;

an energy harvesting device electrically connected to the electricity-generating layers and comprising a pair of conductive structures having arcing tips configured to electrically arc in response to an EOS event caused by the charge; and

a storage device electrically connected to the energy harvesting device and configured to store energy generated by the energy harvesting device.

11. The wearable device of claim 10 , wherein the electricity-generating layers comprise insulating layers configured to rub against each other to generate the charge in response to the bodily movement.

12. The wearable device of claim 11 , wherein the insulating layers comprise a fabric material.

13. The wearable device of claim 12 , wherein the wearable device further comprises a monitor device for monitoring a health indicator configured to be electrically powered by the storage device.

14. The wearable device of claim 13 , wherein the monitor device comprises circuitry for performing one or more of collecting, processing and storing health indicator information.

15. The wearable device of claim 10 , wherein the conductive structures are lithographically patterned using a semiconductor fabrication process.

16. A system on a patch (SOP), comprising:

a flexible patch configured to conform to a skin portion of a user;

an energy harvesting device integrated with the flexible patch, the energy harvesting device comprising a plurality of electricity-generating layers arranged to harvest energy from static electricity caused by a bodily movement of the user;

conductive structures configured to be in direct physical contact with the skin portion to transfer charge away from the skin portion to the energy harvesting device;

a storage device integrated with the flexible patch and configured to store energy generated by the energy harvesting device; and

a monitor device configured for monitoring a health indicator and to be electrically powered by the storage device.

17. The SOP of claim 16 , wherein the energy harvesting device comprises a pair of conductive structures having arcing tips configured to electrically arc in response to an EOS event caused by the bodily movement of the user.

18. The SOP of claim 16 , wherein the monitor device comprises circuitry for performing one or more of collecting, processing and storing health indicator information.

19. The SOP of claim 18 , wherein the health indicator includes a blood sugar level, a blood pressure, a body temperature, or a level of perspiration of the user.

20. The SOP of claim 16 , wherein the electricity-generating layers comprise insulating layers configured to rub against each other to generate the charge in response to the bodily movement.

21. The SOP of claim 20 , wherein the insulating layers comprise a fabric material.
