Abstract

Medical systems, devices and methods are provided for engaging tissue, e.g. for clipping tissue, closing a perforation or performing hemostasis. Generally, the medical system including a housing, first and second jaws rotatable relative to the housing, a driver, and an elongate drive wire. The elongate drive wire may be disconnected from the driver, first and second jaws, and the housing, which are left in vivo engaged with the tissue.

Claims (44)

1. A medical device for engaging tissue, the medical device comprising:

a housing defining an internal passageway and a longitudinal axis extending between proximal and distal ends of the housing;

a first jaw rotatable relative to the housing, the first jaw having proximal and distal ends;

a second jaw rotatable relative to the housing, the second jaw having proximal and distal ends;

a driver engaged with the proximal ends of the first and second jaws, longitudinal movement of the driver rotating the first and second jaws relative to the housing;

an elongated drive wire detachably connected to the driver for longitudinal movement therewith; and

a first biasing strip and a second biasing strip, the first biasing strip having one end fixedly attached to a first exterior surface of the first jaw and the other end slidably attached to the housing, the second biasing strip having one end fixedly attached to a second exterior surface of the second jaw and the other end slidably attached to the housing; the first and second biasing strips biasing the first and second jaws radially.

2. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the other ends of the first and second biasing strips are slidably and pivotally attached to the housing.

3. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the first and second biasing strips are fixedly attached to the distal ends of the first and second jaws, respectively.

4. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein an exterior of the housing includes first and second channels sized to receive the first and second biasing strips.

5. The medical device of claim 4 , wherein the jaws are rotated towards each other and substantially located within the housing in a retracted configuration, and wherein the first and second channels receive the first and second biasing strips in the retracted configuration such that the first and second biasing strips are flush with an exterior surface of the housing.

6. The medical device of claim 4 , wherein the other ends of the first and second biasing strips have a T-shape defining a crossbar, and wherein the housing includes first and second slots coextensive with the first and second channels, and wherein the crossbars pass through the first and second slots.

7. The medical device of claim 4 , wherein the distal ends of the first and second jaws are curved radially inwardly, and wherein the one ends of the first and second biasing strips are curved radially inwardly to match a curvature of the first and second jaws.

8. The medical device of claim 4 , wherein the proximal ends of the first and second jaws include gears having teeth, wherein the driver includes corresponding teeth that mesh with the teeth of the first and second jaws, and wherein a biasing of the first and second jaws removes slack from the meshing teeth to provide smooth rotation of the first and second jaws.

9. The medical device of claim 4 , wherein the housing includes first and second slots coextensive with the first and second channels, respectively.

10. The medical device of claim 9 , wherein the other end of the first biasing strip passes through the first slot and the other end of the second biasing strip passes through the second slot.

11. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the first jaw and the second jaw are rotated towards each other and substantially located within the housing in a retracted configuration, and wherein when the first jaw and the second jaw are in the retracted configuration, the first biasing strip and the second biasing strip are disposed outside of the first jaw and the second jaw respectively.

12. A medical device for engaging tissue, the medical device comprising:

a housing defining an internal passageway and a longitudinal axis extending between proximal and distal ends of the housing;

a first jaw rotatable relative to the housing, the first jaw having proximal and distal ends;

a second jaw rotatable relative to the housing, the second jaw having proximal and distal ends;

a driver engaged with the proximal ends of the first and second jaws, longitudinal movement of the driver rotating the first and second jaws relative to the housing;

an elongated drive wire detachably connected to the driver for longitudinal movement therewith; and

a first biasing strip and a second biasing strip, the first biasing strip having one end fixedly attached to the first jaw and the other end slidably attached to the housing, the second biasing strip having one end fixedly attached to the second jaw and the other end slidably attached to the housing; the first and second biasing strips biasing the first and second jaws radially,

wherein an exterior of the housing includes first and second channels sized to receive the first and second biasing strips,

wherein the housing includes first and second slots coextensive with the first and second channels, respectively, and

wherein the other ends of the first and second biasing strips pass through the first and second slots, respectively.

13. The medical device of claim 12 , wherein the first jaw and the second jaw are rotated towards each other and substantially located within the housing in a retracted configuration, and wherein when the first jaw and the second jaw are in the retracted configuration, the first biasing strip and the second biasing strip are disposed outside of the first jaw and the second jaw, respectively.

14. The medical device of claim 13 , wherein when the first jaw and the second jaw are in the retracted configuration, the first and second channels receive the first and second biasing strips such that the first and second biasing strips are flush with an exterior surface of the housing.

15. The medical device of claim 12 , wherein the proximal ends of the first and second jaws include gears having teeth, and wherein the driver includes corresponding teeth that mesh with the teeth of the first and second jaws.

16. A medical device for engaging tissue, the medical device comprising:

a housing defining an internal passageway and a longitudinal axis extending between proximal and distal ends of the housing;

a first jaw rotatable relative to the housing, the first jaw having proximal and distal ends;

a second jaw rotatable relative to the housing, the second jaw having proximal and distal ends;

a driver engaged with the proximal ends of the first and second jaws, longitudinal movement of the driver rotating the first and second jaws relative to the housing;

an elongated drive wire detachably connected to the driver for longitudinal movement therewith; and

a first biasing strip and a second biasing strip, the first biasing strip having one end fixedly attached to the first jaw and the other end slidably attached to the housing, the second biasing strip having one end fixedly attached to the second jaw and the other end slidably attached to the housing; the first and second biasing strips biasing the first and second jaws radially,

wherein an exterior of the housing includes first and second channels sized to receive the first and second biasing strips,

wherein the proximal ends of the first and second jaws include gears having teeth, and

wherein the driver includes corresponding teeth that mesh with the teeth of the first and second jaws.

17. The medical device of claim 16 , wherein the first jaw and the second jaw are rotated towards each other and substantially located within the housing in a retracted configuration, and wherein when the first jaw and the second jaw are in the retracted configuration, the first biasing strip and the second biasing strip are disposed outside of the first jaw and the second jaw respectively.

18. The medical device of claim 17 , wherein when the first jaw and the second jaw are in the retracted configuration, the first and second channels receive the first and second biasing strips such that the first and second biasing strips are flush with an exterior surface of the housing.

19. The medical device of claim 16 , wherein the housing includes first and second slots coextensive with the first and second channels.
