Abstract

Some embodiments of the present disclosure relate to an article comprising a reinforced glass mat. In some embodiments, the reinforced glass mat includes a glass mat and a reinforcement material. In some embodiments, the glass mat includes a web of glass fibers. In some embodiments, the reinforcement material is embedded into the web of glass fibers of the glass mat. In some embodiments, the reinforced glass mat includes a sufficient amount of the reinforcement material, so as to result in a nail shank shear resistance of 13 lbs to 17 lbs, when the article is tested according to ASTM 1761 at 140° F. Methods of making the article, specific embodiments of the reinforcement material in the form of a polymeric binder, and methods of forming a roofing shingle from the article are also disclosed.

Claims (37)

1. A method comprising:

continuously feeding a glass mat,

pumping a first reinforcement material through a first slot die,

applying the first reinforcement material onto a top of a first reinforcement region of the glass mat to form a first top layer of the first reinforcement region,

pumping a second reinforcement material through a second slot die, and

applying the second reinforcement material onto a top of a second reinforcement region of the glass mat to form a second top layer of the second reinforcement region, and

wherein the first reinforcement material and the second reinforcement material are the same.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the glass mat comprises a web of glass fibers.

3. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein the glass mat is fed continuously in a horizontal direction, and

wherein the first and second reinforcement regions form a first and a second lane on the glass mat.

4. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein the glass mat is fed in a vertical direction, and

wherein the first and second reinforcement regions form a first lane and a second lane on the glass mat.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first reinforcement material comprises a polymeric binder.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second reinforcement material comprises a polymeric binder.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first reinforcement region is a nail zone of a shingle.

8. A method comprising:

continuously feeding a glass mat,

pumping a first reinforcement material through a first slot die,

applying the first reinforcement material onto a top of a first reinforcement region of the glass mat to form a first top layer of the first reinforcement region,

pumping a second reinforcement material through a second slot die, and

applying the second reinforcement material onto a top of a second reinforcement region of the glass mat to form a second top layer of the second reinforcement region, and

wherein the applying the first reinforcement material and the applying the second reinforcement material are done simultaneously.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first reinforcement material and the second reinforcement material are different.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first reinforcement material and the second reinforcement material are the same.

11. A method comprising:

continuously feeding a glass mat,

pumping a first reinforcement material through a first slot die,

applying the first reinforcement material onto a top of a first reinforcement region of the glass mat to form a first top layer of the first reinforcement region,

pumping a second reinforcement material through a second slot die,

applying the second reinforcement material onto a top of a second reinforcement region of the glass mat to form a second top layer of the second reinforcement region,

pumping a third reinforcement material through a third slot die, and

applying the third reinforcement material onto a bottom of the first reinforcement region of the glass mat to form a first bottom layer of the first reinforcement region.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

after forming the first bottom layer of the first reinforcement region, pumping a fourth reinforcement material through a fourth slot die, and

applying the fourth reinforcement material onto a bottom of the second reinforcement region of the glass mat to form a second bottom layer of the second reinforcement region.
