Abstract

In general, surgical instruments described herein can include a handle assembly having an elongate shaft extending distally therefrom. The handle assembly can be configured to axially translate a carrier assembly that secures a stylet extending therethrough. Translation of the stylet can be made relative to a distal end of the elongate shaft. The surgical instruments can include various carrier assemblies for positioning the distal end of the stylet relative to the distal end of the elongate shaft based on a length of bone anchor to be installed by the surgical instrument.

Claims (23)

1 . A surgical instrument, comprising:

a shaft assembly comprising a first handle and an elongate shaft with a distal tip configured to couple to a bone anchor assembly;

a carrier assembly operatively coupled to the first handle and configured to rotate with the shaft assembly in response to rotation of the first handle; and

a depth adjuster operatively coupled to the carrier assembly and defining a longitudinal slot configured to laterally receive and seat a stylet, the depth adjuster being movable between a first position in which the depth adjuster is disengaged from the carrier assembly and a held stylet is repositionable relative to the depth adjuster, and a second position in which the depth adjuster is engaged with the carrier assembly and a held stylet is longitudinally fixed relative to the depth adjuster.

2 . The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the shaft assembly includes a second handle, and wherein the carrier assembly is configured to longitudinally translate relative to the shaft assembly in response to rotation of the second handle.

3 . The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the longitudinal slot includes a plurality of notches sized to engage the stylet a length thereof.

4 . The surgical instrument of claim 3 , wherein a distal end of the longitudinal slot includes a non-linear pathway configured to capture and prevent removal of a seated stylet.

5 . The surgical instrument of claim 3 , wherein the depth adjuster includes a plurality of markings associated with each of the plurality of notches, the plurality of markings corresponding to a length of a selected bone anchor assembly to be advanced via the distal tip.

6 . The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the shaft assembly includes a drive tube configured to couple with the depth adjuster and the carrier assembly.

7 . The surgical instrument of claim 6 , wherein the drive tube is rotatable via the first handle to cause the carrier assembly to rotate therewith.

8 . The surgical instrument of claim 6 , wherein the drive tube comprises a pair of opposed legs defining a pair of opposed slots therebetween, the opposed slots being configured to engage complimentary features of the carrier assembly.

9 . The surgical instrument of claim 6 , wherein the drive tube includes a central flange extending radially from a middle region thereof.

10 . A surgical instrument, comprising:

a shaft assembly comprising a first handle and an elongate shaft with a distal tip configured to couple to a bone anchor assembly;

a carrier assembly operatively coupled to the shaft assembly and configured to rotate with the shaft assembly in response to rotation of the first handle;

a depth adjuster operatively coupled to the carrier assembly and defining a longitudinal slot configured to laterally receive and seat a stylet; and

a second handle disposed proximal to the depth adjuster and configured to mate to a proximal end of a held stylet, the positioning handle being configured to translate the carrier assembly relative to the shaft assembly.

11 . The surgical instrument of claim 10 , wherein the second handle includes at least one internal thread configured to engage the carrier assembly.

12 . The surgical instrument of claim 11 , wherein the at least one internal thread is configured to engage external threads of the carrier assembly.

13 . The surgical instrument of claim 10 , wherein the shaft assembly includes a drive tube configured to couple with the depth adjuster and the carrier assembly.

14 . The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein the drive tube is rotatable via the first handle to cause the carrier assembly to rotate therewith.

15 . The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein the drive tube comprises a pair of opposed legs defining a pair of opposed slots therebetween, the opposed slots being configured to engage complimentary features of the carrier assembly.

16 . The surgical instrument of claim 10 , wherein the longitudinal slot includes a plurality of notches sized to engage the stylet a length thereof.
