Abstract

Tubular prostheses are provided for use in airways, upper digestive, and urinary tracts. Each of these uses has its own specific sets of biological specifications, based on what it must contain and exclude and the physical and chemical pressures and stresses to which it is subjected. The prostheses may be made from allogeneic cells. Thus they can be manufactured and stored prior to an individual's personal need arising.

Claims (8)

1 . An artificial esophagus for replacement of damaged tissue by implantation, said artificial esophagus comprising:

substantially acellular, human extracellular matrix formed as a tube of greater than 10 mm diameter, wherein the artificial esophagus has a suture retention strength of greater than 150 grams.

2 . The artificial esophagus of claim 1 which is impermeable to food, liquid, and gas.

3 . The artificial esophagus of claim 2 which is populated with esophageal cells selected from the group consisting of epithelial cells, endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and fibroblasts.

4 . The artificial esophagus of claim 1 wherein the substantially acellular, human extracellular matrix was produced and secreted by human vascular smooth muscle cells.

5 . The artificial esophagus of claim 1 wherein greater than 30% of dry tissue weight of the artificial esophagus is collagen.

6 . The artificial esophagus of claim 1 which has a rupture strength of greater than 1000 mm Hg.

7 . The artificial esophagus of claim 1 which comprises a tubular stent.
