Abstract

In a computer-implemented method, a portion of an electronic document is displayed on a touch screen display of a portable multifunction device. The displayed portion has a vertical position and a horizontal position in the electronic document. An object is detected on or near the displayed portion of the electronic document. In response to detecting the object, a vertical bar and a horizontal bar are displayed on top of the displayed portion. The vertical bar has a vertical position on top of the displayed portion that corresponds to the vertical position in the electronic document of the displayed portion. The horizontal bar has a horizontal position on top of the displayed portion that corresponds to the horizontal position in the electronic document of the displayed portion. After a predetermined condition is met, display of the vertical bar and of the horizontal bar is ceased.

Claims (74)

displaying, via the display, a portion of scrollable content, wherein the displayed portion of the scrollable content has a vertical position in the scrollable content;

displaying, via the display, a vertical bar concurrently with the displayed portion of the scrollable content, wherein the vertical bar has a vertical position that corresponds to the vertical position in the scrollable content of the displayed portion of the scrollable content;

detecting, via the one or more input devices, a user input corresponding to translating the scrollable content in a first direction;

in response to detecting the user input corresponding to translating the scrollable content in the first direction:

translating the scrollable content in a direction corresponding to the first direction so that a new portion of the scrollable content is displayed via the display; and

moving the vertical bar to a new vertical position such that the new vertical position corresponds to the vertical position in the scrollable content of the displayed new portion of the scrollable content;

after determining that the scrollable content has been translated to an edge of the scrollable content, continuing to detect, via the one or more input devices, the user input corresponding to translating the scrollable content in the first direction; and

in response to continuing to detect the user input corresponding to translating the scrollable content in the first direction, changing a length of the vertical bar.

2 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the vertical bar is displayed on top of the displayed portion of the scrollable content.

3 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more programs further include instructions for:

in response to a predetermined condition being met, ceasing to display the vertical bar while continuing to display the scrollable content.

4 . The electronic device of claim 3 , wherein the predetermined condition includes detecting that the user input corresponding to translating the scrollable content in the first direction has ended.

5 . The electronic device of claim 3 , wherein the predetermined condition includes detecting that the user input corresponding to translating the scrollable content in the first direction has ceased interacting with the scrollable content for a predetermined time period.

6 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more programs further include instructions for:

when the portion of the scrollable content is initially displayed:

displaying the vertical bar for a predetermined time period; and

ceasing to display the vertical bar immediately following the predetermined time period.

7 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the user input corresponding to translating the scrollable content in the first direction includes movement in the first direction.

8 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the user input corresponding to translating the scrollable content in the first direction includes a gesture performed by a portion of a hand of a user.

9 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the user input corresponding to translating the scrollable content in the first direction includes a movement of a finger.

10 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein detecting the user input corresponding to translating the scrollable content in the first direction includes detecting movement of a finger contact on a touch-sensitive surface.

11 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the vertical bar has a major axis and a portion of the scrollable content along the major axis of the vertical bar is not covered by the vertical bar.

12 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing one or more programs configured to be executed by one or more processors of an electronic device with a display and one or more input devices, the one or more programs including instructions for:

displaying, via the display, a portion of scrollable content, wherein the displayed portion of the scrollable content has a vertical position in the scrollable content;

displaying, via the display, a vertical bar concurrently with the displayed portion of the scrollable content, wherein the vertical bar has a vertical position that corresponds to the vertical position in the scrollable content of the displayed portion of the scrollable content;

detecting, via the one or more input devices, a user input corresponding to translating the scrollable content in a first direction;

in response to detecting the user input corresponding to translating the scrollable content in the first direction:

translating the scrollable content in a direction corresponding to the first direction so that a new portion of the scrollable content is displayed via the display; and

moving the vertical bar to a new vertical position such that the new vertical position corresponds to the vertical position in the scrollable content of the displayed new portion of the scrollable content;

after determining that the scrollable content has been translated to an edge of the scrollable content, continuing to detect, via the one or more input devices, the user input corresponding to translating the scrollable content in the first direction; and

in response to continuing to detect the user input corresponding to translating the scrollable content in the first direction, changing a length of the vertical bar.

13 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the vertical bar is displayed on top of the displayed portion of the scrollable content.

14 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the one or more programs further include instructions for:

in response to a predetermined condition being met, ceasing to display the vertical bar while continuing to display the scrollable content.

15 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the predetermined condition includes detecting that the user input corresponding to translating the scrollable content in the first direction has ended.

16 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the predetermined condition includes detecting that the user input corresponding to translating the scrollable content in the first direction has ceased interacting with the scrollable content for a predetermined time period.

17 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the one or more programs further include instructions for:

when the portion of the scrollable content is initially displayed:

displaying the vertical bar for a predetermined time period; and

ceasing to display the vertical bar immediately following the predetermined time period.
