Abstract

The present invention includes systems and methods for a multi-primary color system for display. A multi-primary color system increases the number of primary colors available in a color system and color system equipment. Increasing the number of primary colors reduces metameric errors from viewer to viewer. One embodiment of the multi-primary color system includes Red, Green, Blue, Cyan, Yellow, and Magenta primaries. The systems of the present invention maintain compatibility with existing color systems and equipment and provide systems for backwards compatibility with older color systems.

Claims (53)

1 . A system for displaying image data, comprising:

at least one processor, wherein the at least one processor is operable to process graphics;

wherein the at least one processor is operable to render the image data for display on the at least one display device, thereby creating rendered image data;

wherein the rendered image data is transmitted to the at least one display controller;

wherein the transmitted rendered data includes processed Yxy data, wherein the processed Yxy data includes a first channel related to the luminance (Y), a second channel related to a first colorimetric coordinate (x) of the two colorimetric coordinates (x and y), and a third channel related to a second colorimetric coordinate (y) of the two colorimetric coordinates (x and y);

wherein the at least one display controller is operable to scale the rendered image data for display on the at least one display device, thereby creating image display data;

wherein the at least one display device is operable to display the image display data; and

wherein the system for displaying image data evokes a mean awe of at least 3.69 on an AWE SCALE (AWE-S) for at least one hundred viewers.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor includes a render engine, at least one render pipeline, a programmable pixel shader, a programmable vector shader, a vector array processor, a curvature engine, and/or a memory cache.

3 . The system of claim 1 , further including a display engine, wherein the display engine includes a raster scaler, at least one video display controller, a color channel-to-XYZ converter, a linear converter, a scaler, a limiter, an XYZ-to-Yxy converter, a sampling selector, a video bus, a look-up table (LUT), at least one output formatter, and/or at least one encoder.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is included on a video card.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is a plurality of processors, and wherein the plurality of processors are operable to render the image data in parallel.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the image display data includes a mapping of the rendered image data to the at least one display device.

7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the image display data includes a cropping of the rendered image data.

8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the image display data includes timing data.

9 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the image display data includes a location of each of the at least one display device.

10 . The system of claim 1 , the at least one display device is operable to display at least 80% of a total area covered between about 400 nanometers and about 700 nanometers in the CIE Yxy color space.

11 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the image data corresponds to an image, and wherein the image includes colors outside of an International Telecommunication Union Recommendation (ITU-R) BT.2020 color gamut.

12 . The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the at least one display device is operable to transmit the image display data.

13 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one display device includes at least one display screen, and wherein the at least one display screen includes a liquid crystal display (LCD) screen, a light-emitting diode (LED) display screen, a quantum dot (QD) display screen, and/or a projector screen.

14 . A system for displaying image data, comprising:

at least one processor, wherein the at least one processor is operable to process graphics;

at least one display controller; and

at least one display device;

wherein the image data includes a set of primary color signals, wherein the set of primary color signals corresponds to a set of values in an International Commission on Illumination (CIE) Yxy color space, wherein the set of values in the CIE Yxy color space includes a luminance (Y) and two colorimetric coordinates (x and y);

wherein the at least one processor is operable to render the image data for display on the at least one display device, thereby creating rendered image data;

wherein the rendered image data is transmitted to the at least one display controller;

wherein the transmitted rendered data includes processed Yxy data, wherein the processed Yxy data includes a first channel related to the luminance (Y), a second channel related to a first colorimetric coordinate (x) of the two colorimetric coordinates (x and y), and a third channel related to a second colorimetric coordinate (y) of the two colorimetric coordinates (x and y);

wherein the at least one display controller is operable to scale the rendered image data for display on the at least one display device, thereby creating image display data;

wherein the at least one display controller is operable to transmit an image display signal to each of the at least one display device;

wherein the image display signal includes a portion of the image display data;

wherein the at least one display device is operable to display the image display data; and

wherein the system for displaying image data evokes a mean awe of at least 3.69 on an AWE SCALE (AWE-S) for at least one hundred viewers.

15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the portion of the image display data included in the image display signal is based on a location of each of the at least one display device.

16 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the image display signal includes a cropping of the rendered image data.
