Abstract

The disclosed technology relates to a method of minimizing electrically conductive deposits in an electrically conducting apparatus by lubricating the apparatus with a lubricant containing a borate ester.

Claims (24)

1 . A method of minimizing electrically conductive deposits in an electrically conducting apparatus comprising applying to said apparatus a lubricant comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and from 0.2 to 1.1 wt. % borate ester and 0.6 to 1 percent by weight of a thiadiazole compound, and applying an electric current to the apparatus.

2 . The method of claim 1 , maintaining a wear rating according to ASTM D5182 at 150C of greater than 10.

3 . The method of claim 1 wherein the borate ester comprises formula (I)

wherein each R individually is 4 to 18 carbon atoms.

4 . The method of claim 1 wherein the borate ester comprises formula (II)

wherein each R individually is 4 to 18 carbon atoms.

5 . The method of claim 1 wherein the borate ester comprises formula (III)

wherein each R individually is 4 to 18 carbon atoms.

6 . The method of claim 1 wherein the borate ester comprises formula (IV)

wherein each R individually is 4 to 18 carbon atoms.

7 . The method of claim 1 wherein the borate ester comprises formula (V)

wherein each R individually is 4 to 18 carbon atoms.

8 . The method of claim 1 wherein the borate ester comprises formula (VI)

wherein each R individually is 4 to 18 carbon atoms.

9 . The method of claim 1 wherein the borate ester comprises tripropyl borate.

10 . The method of claim 1 wherein the borate ester comprises tributyl borate.

11 . The method of claim 1 wherein the borate ester comprises tripentyl borate.

12 . The method of claim 1 wherein the borate ester comprises trihexyl borate.

13 . The method of claim 1 wherein the borate ester comprises triheptyl borate.

14 . The method of claim 1 wherein the borate ester comprises trioctyl borate.

15 . The method of claim 1 wherein the borate ester comprises trinonyl borate.

16 . The method of claim 1 wherein the borate ester comprises tridecyl borate.

17 . The method of claim 1 wherein the borate ester comprises tri-2-ethylhexyl borate.

18 . The method of claim 1 wherein the borate ester is present in the lubricant at 0.25 to 1.1 percent by weight.
