Abstract

A system for monitoring and controlling a device, the system including: a) an automated litter device, which is the device, including: i) a chamber for holding litter and configured to rotate during a cleaning cycle, ii) a support base, iii) a waste drawer, iv) sensors configured to detect a plurality of conditions of the device and transmit one or more signals related to the plurality of conditions, v) a controller, and vi) a communication module which is a wireless communication module; b) a user interface which is a mobile computing device; and c) a network; wherein the wireless communication module is in wireless communication with the user interface via the network to transmit one or more status signals associated with the one or more of the sensors to the user interface and receive one or more instruction signals via the user interface.

Claims (48)

1 . A system for monitoring and controlling a device, the system comprising:

a) an automated litter device, which is the device, comprising:

i) a chamber configured to hold a litter to allow an animal to enter and excrete a waste, wherein the chamber includes a waste opening, and wherein the chamber includes an axis of rotation and is configured to rotate about the axis of rotation during a cleaning cycle;

ii) a support base which supports the chamber;

iii) a waste drawer within the support base and located below the chamber, wherein the waste drawer is configured to be in communication with the chamber via the waste opening to receive the waste during the cleaning cycle;

iv) a plurality of sensors configured to detect a plurality of conditions of the device and transmit one or more signals related to one or more of the plurality of conditions, wherein the plurality of sensors include:

iv-a) one or more position sensors configured to detect one or more positions of the chamber relative to the support base;

iv-b) one or more mass sensors configured to detect a presence of the animal within the chamber and a mass of the animal; and

iv-c) one or more waste drawer sensors configured to detect a presence of contents at or above a predetermined level in the waste drawer;

v) a controller located within the support base and in electrical communication with the plurality of sensors and is adapted to receive the one or more signals;

vi) a communication module which is a wireless communication module and is in communication with the controller;

b) a user interface which is a mobile computing device, wherein the user interface is configured to receive a plurality of instructions from a user for the device to perform a plurality of operations, and wherein the plurality of operations include one or more cleaning cycles, one or more sleep modes, and one or more wait modes;

c) a network; and

wherein the wireless communication module is in wireless communication with the user interface via the network such as to transmit one or more status signals associated with the one or more of the plurality of sensors to the user interface and receive one or more instruction signals associated with the plurality of instructions via the user interface.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more position sensors include one or more Hall Effect sensors.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more signals include a waste level signal from the one or more waste drawer sensors.

4 . The system of claim 3 , wherein the controller is adapted to relay a level of the contents within the waste drawer to the user interface via the communication module;

wherein the level of the contents includes the predetermined level; and

wherein the predetermined level is near or at a maximum capacity of the waste drawer.

5 . The system of claim 3 , wherein the one or more waste drawer sensors include two or more infrared sensors opposing one another, one or more laser beams, a laser beam sensor and an infrared sensor combination, or any combination thereof.

6 . The system of claim 3 , wherein the one or more waste drawer sensors include a light beam transmitter and a light beam detector which are configured to detect the contents within the waste drawer when the contents within the waste drawer interfere with a light beam emitted from the light beam transmitter.

7 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the user interface is configured to display when the contents are at or near the predetermined level such that the user is able to refer to the user interface to see a notification that the waste drawer is full.

8 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the one or more waste drawer sensors are located within the support base.

9 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more mass sensors include one or more resistors, force sensors, switches, or a combination thereof.

10 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the mobile computing device includes a mobile phone, a tablet, a mobile computer, or a combination thereof.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the communication module comprises a Wi-Fi transmitter, a Bluetooth transmitter, or both.

12 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more wait modes prevent the one or more cleaning cycles from occurring after a predetermined period of time after the waste is eliminated from the animal into the chamber and/or an absence of the animal from the device has been confirmed.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the user interface is configured to receive a selection of the predetermined period of time from the user.

14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the one or more sleep modes prevent the one or more cleaning cycles from occurring over a second predetermined period of time.

15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the user interface is configured to receive the second predetermined period of time from the user.

16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the second predetermined period of time includes a start time, an end time, a duration of time, or any combination thereof.

17 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the user interface is configured to illustrate a history of usage of the automated litter device by the animal.

18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the history of usage is illustrated by a chart and the history of usage is over a time period, wherein the time period is shown as one or more days, weeks, months, or a combination thereof.

19 . A system for monitoring and controlling a device, the system comprising:

a) an automated litter device, which is the device, comprising:

i) a chamber configured to hold a litter to allow an animal to enter and excrete a waste, wherein the chamber includes a waste opening, and wherein the chamber includes an axis of rotation and is configured to rotate about the axis of rotation during a cleaning cycle;

ii) a support base which supports the chamber;

iii) a waste drawer within the support base and located below the chamber, wherein the waste drawer is configured to be in communication with the chamber via the waste opening to receive the waste during the cleaning cycle;

iv) a plurality of sensors configured to detect a plurality of conditions of the device and transmit one or more signals related to one or more of the plurality of conditions, wherein the plurality of sensors include:

iv-a) one or more position sensors configured to detect one or more positions of the chamber relative to the support base;

iv-b) one or more mass sensors configured to detect a presence of the animal within the chamber and a mass of the animal; and

iv-c) one or more waste drawer sensors configured to detect a presence of contents at or above a predetermined level in the waste drawer;

v) a controller located within the support base and in electrical communication with the plurality of sensors and is adapted to receive the one or more signals;

vi) a communication module which is a wireless communication module and is in communication with the controller;

b) a user interface which is a mobile computing device, wherein the user interface is configured to receive a plurality of instructions from a user for the device to perform a plurality of operations; wherein the plurality of operations include one or more cleaning cycles, one or more sleep modes, and one or more wait modes; and wherein the user interface is configured to illustrate a history of usage of the automated litter device by the animal;

c) a network; and

wherein the wireless communication module is in wireless communication with the user interface via the network such as to transmit one or more status signals associated with the one or more of the plurality of sensors to the user interface and receive one or more instruction signals associated with the plurality of instructions via the user interface.
