Abstract

Claims (40)

1 . A glucose monitoring assembly, comprising:

(1) an inserter, comprising:

an inserter housing slidably coupled with a sheath, wherein the sheath comprises a longitudinal slot;

a carrier comprising a laterally-extending protrusion configured to engage the longitudinal slot; and

a sharp configured to insert a portion of a transcutaneous glucose sensor into a subject; and

(2) an on body electronics unit, comprising:

an on body electronics unit housing;

the transcutaneous glucose sensor, comprising:

a proximal portion configured to couple with on body electronics above the subject's skin; and

a distal portion configured to be positioned in a subcutaneous space in contact with the subject's bodily fluid and to generate electrical signals indicative of a glucose level of the subject, wherein the distal portion comprises a glucose-responsive enzyme; and

the on body electronics comprising a processor, memory, a power supply, and wireless communication circuitry, wherein the on body electronics is disposed in the on body electronics unit housing, and

wherein the inserter is configured to:

advance the on body electronics unit and the sharp from a proximal position entirely within the inserter to a distal position, such that the sharp pierces the skin of the subject and the on body electronics unit housing is secured to the skin of the subject in the distal position,

automatically retract the sharp from the distal position to a retracted position entirely within the inserter, and

wherein the laterally-extending protrusion is configured to traverse the longitudinal slot in a linear and distal direction when the on body electronics unit and the sharp are advanced from the proximal position to the distal position.

The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the on body electronics unit housing further comprises a top surface and a bottom surface, wherein the top surface comprises an aperture of the top surface and the bottom surface comprises an aperture of the bottom surface, wherein the on body electronics further comprises an aperture of the on body electronics, and wherein the sharp extends through the aperture of the top surface, the aperture of the on body electronics, and the aperture of the bottom surface when the on body electronics unit and the sharp are in the proximal position.

3 . The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 2 , wherein the inserter further comprises a distal end configured to be positioned on the skin of the subject before advancement of the on body electronics unit and the sharp from the proximal position.

4 . The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 3 , further comprising an adhesive portion configured to secure the on body electronics unit housing to the skin of the subject.

5 . The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 4 , wherein the on body electronics unit and the sharp are configured to advance along a linear path when advancing from the proximal position to the distal position.

The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 5 , wherein the on body electronics unit housing is configured to advance a distance when the on body electronics unit advances from the proximal position to the distal position, and wherein the distance is greater than a maximum height of the on body electronics unit housing.

7 . The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 6 , wherein the sharp is further configured to pierce the skin of the subject at an angle substantially perpendicular to the skin of the subject.

8 . The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 7 , wherein the inserter further comprises a driver disposed in the inserter, and wherein the driver is configured to apply a force that retracts the sharp after the sharp reaches the distal position.

9 . The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 8 , wherein the driver comprises a spring, and wherein the spring is in a compressed state when the on body electronics unit and the sharp are in the proximal position.

10 . The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 9 , further comprising a cap removably attached to the inserter by a plurality of threads, wherein the cap is configured to be removed from the inserter before the distal end of the inserter is positioned on the skin of the subject.

11 . The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 10 , wherein the distal portion of the transcutaneous glucose sensor is substantially orthogonal to the proximal portion of the transcutaneous glucose sensor.

12 . The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 10 , wherein at least a portion of the on body electronics is in a low power state when the on body electronics unit and the sharp are in the proximal position.

13 . The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 10 , wherein at least a portion of the on body electronics is in a no power state or an inactive mode when the on body electronics unit and the sharp are in the proximal position.

14 . The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 10 , wherein the distal end of the inserter resides in a plane, and wherein the bottom surface of the on body electronics unit housing is parallel to the plane when the on body electronics unit and the sharp are in the proximal position.

15 . The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 10 , wherein the inserter further comprises a maximum height between about 40 mm and about 80 mm.

The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 10 , wherein the inserter and the on body electronics unit are disposed in a product packaging, and wherein the on body electronics unit is entirely within the inserter when the on body electronics unit and the inserter are disposed in the product packaging.

The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 10 , wherein the distal end of the inserter is further configured to be removed from the skin of the subject after automatic retraction of the sharp from the distal position, and while the on body electronics unit housing remains secured to the skin of the subject, and

wherein the on body electronics unit is configured to be disposed after a single use.

18 . The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 10 , wherein the inserter is further configured to activate the on body electronics.

19 . The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 10 , wherein the on body electronics unit is configured to obtain a temperature measurement.

20 . The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 19 , wherein the temperature measurement is configured to be used in a software routine to correct or compensate a glucose level measurement.

21 . The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 19 , wherein the temperature measurement is a measurement of a temperature of the transcutaneous glucose sensor.

22 . The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 19 , wherein the temperature measurement is a measurement of a temperature of the subject's skin.

23 . The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 10 , wherein a portion of the longitudinal slot is configured to prevent further travel of the carrier in the distal direction after the on body electronics unit and the sharp are advanced to the distal position.

24 . The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 10 , wherein the on body electronics unit has a predetermined monitoring time period of ten days or more.

25 . The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 10 , wherein the on body electronics unit has a predetermined monitoring time period of fourteen days or more.
