Abstract

An apparatus for insertion of a medical device in the skin of a subject is provided, as well as methods of inserting medical devices. Embodiments include removing a substantially cylindrical cap from an inserter to expose a substantially cylindrical sleeve, removing a cover from a substantially cylindrical container holding sensor components, and fitting the sensor components into the inserter.

Claims (51)

1. A glucose monitoring assembly, the assembly comprising:

(1) an inserter, comprising:

a sharp carrier assembly disposed in the inserter, wherein the sharp carrier assembly comprises a sharp configured to insert a portion of a glucose sensor into a subject; and

a spring comprising an outer circumference, the outer circumference being disposed in an interior of the sharp carrier assembly;

(2) an on body electronics unit, comprising:

an on body electronics unit housing comprising a top surface and a bottom surface, wherein the top surface comprises a first aperture, the bottom surface comprises a second aperture, and wherein a passageway extends through the on body electronics unit between the first aperture and the second aperture;

the glucose sensor; and

on body electronics coupled with the glucose sensor, wherein the on body electronics are disposed within the on body electronics unit housing, and wherein the on body electronics comprise a processor, memory, a power supply, and wireless communication circuitry configured to wirelessly communicate data indicative of a glucose level,

wherein the sharp carrier assembly is in direct and removable engagement with the on body electronics unit housing, wherein the engagement is external to the passageway and in a spaced relation with the first aperture,

wherein the inserter is configured to:

advance the sharp carrier assembly and the on body electronics unit from a proximal position entirely within the inserter to a distal position,

cause the sharp to insert the portion of the glucose sensor into the subject, and

automatically retract the sharp carrier assembly from the distal position to a retracted position entirely within the inserter, and

wherein the sharp extends through the first aperture, the second aperture, and the passageway when the sharp carrier assembly and the on body electronics unit are in the proximal position.

2. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the sharp carrier assembly is configured to disengage from the on body electronics unit housing after the inserter advances the sharp carrier assembly and the on body electronics unit from the proximal position.

The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the sharp carrier assembly comprises a first carrier assembly, wherein the inserter further comprises a second carrier assembly, and wherein the first carrier assembly is releasably coupled with the second carrier assembly when the sharp carrier assembly and the on body electronics unit are in the proximal position.

4. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 3 , wherein the first carrier assembly is configured to decouple from the second carrier assembly after the inserter advances the sharp carrier assembly and the on body electronics unit from the proximal position.

The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the sharp carrier assembly further comprises a plurality of locating features, and wherein the sharp carrier assembly is in the direct and removable engagement with the on body electronics unit housing of the on body electronics unit via the plurality of locating features.

6. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of locating features comprises a plurality of distally extending members.

The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 6 , wherein each distally extending member of the plurality of distally extending members is directly and releasably coupled with the on body electronics unit housing of the on body electronics unit at a corresponding location of a plurality of locations, wherein each corresponding location of the plurality of locations is external to the passageway and in a corresponding spaced relation with the first aperture.

The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 7 , wherein the sharp carrier assembly comprises a first carrier assembly, wherein the inserter further comprises a second carrier assembly, and wherein the each distally extending member of the plurality of distally extending members extends through the second carrier assembly.

9. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of distally extending members comprises:

a first distally extending member directly and releasably coupled with a first location of the on body electronics unit housing that is external to the passageway and in a first spaced relation with the first aperture, and

a second distally extending member directly and releasably coupled with a second location of the on body electronics unit housing that is external to the passageway and in a second spaced relation with the first aperture,

wherein the first location of the on body electronics unit housing is different from the second location of the on body electronics unit housing.

10. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 9 , wherein the first location of the on body electronics unit housing is in a spaced relation with the second location of the on body electronics unit housing.

The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 10 , wherein the sharp carrier assembly comprises a first carrier assembly, wherein the inserter further comprises a second carrier assembly, and wherein the first distally extending member and the second distally extending member extend through the second carrier assembly.

The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the sharp carrier assembly further comprises a locating feature, and wherein the sharp carrier assembly is in the direct and removable engagement with the on body electronics unit housing of the on body electronics unit via the locating feature.

13. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 12 , wherein the locating feature comprises a distally extending member in direct and removable engagement with a top portion of the on body electronics unit housing of the on body electronics unit.

14. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 13 , wherein the distally extending member is configured to enhance control of a positioning of the on body electronics unit housing.

15. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 13 , wherein the distally extending member is configured to prevent skewing of the on body electronics unit housing.

16. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the spring is configured to apply a force that retracts the sharp carrier assembly after the sharp carrier assembly and the on body electronics unit reach the distal position.

The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the inserter further comprises an inserter housing and a sheath, wherein the inserter housing is configured to move in a downward direction towards a skin surface of the subject relative to the sheath in response to an application of force on the inserter housing, and wherein the sheath is configured to remain stationary relative to the skin surface in response to the application of force on the inserter housing.

18. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the on body electronics unit further comprises a sensor hub,

wherein the glucose sensor comprises a distal sensor portion and a proximal sensor portion,

wherein the distal sensor portion is configured to sense the glucose level of the subject,

wherein the proximal sensor portion is engaged with the sensor hub, and

wherein the distal sensor portion is substantially orthogonal to the proximal sensor portion.

19. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the on body electronics comprises a third aperture, and wherein the sharp extends through the third aperture when the sharp carrier assembly and the on body electronics unit are in the proximal position.

20. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the inserter further comprises a distal end configured to be placed on a skin surface of the subject before advancement of the sharp carrier assembly and the on body electronics unit from the proximal position, and

wherein the distal end of the inserter defines a plane, and wherein the bottom surface of the on body electronics unit housing is parallel to the plane when the sharp carrier assembly and the on body electronics unit are in the proximal position.

21. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the on body electronics is in a low power state when the sharp carrier assembly and the on body electronics unit are in the proximal position.

22. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 1 , further comprising an adhesive portion configured to secure the on body electronics unit housing to a skin surface of the subject.

23. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the on body electronics is in a no power state when the sharp carrier assembly and the on body electronics unit are in the proximal position.

24. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the on body electronics is in an inactive mode when the sharp carrier assembly and the on body electronics unit are in the proximal position.

25. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the sharp carrier assembly and the on body electronics unit are configured to advance in a linear direction when advancing from the proximal position within the inserter to the distal position.

The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 1 , wherein a distance between the on body electronics unit housing when the on body electronics unit is in the proximal position and the on body electronics unit housing when the on body electronics unit is in the distal position is greater than a maximum height of the on body electronics unit housing.

27. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the sharp is further configured to pierce a skin surface of the subject at an angle substantially perpendicular to the skin surface of the subject.

28. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a cap removably attached to a distal portion of the inserter by a plurality of threads.

29. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the on body electronics are configured to be initialized via a command transmitted from a display device.

30. The glucose monitoring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the spring comprises a proximal end configured to be in contact with an interior surface of the sharp carrier assembly when the sharp carrier assembly is in the retracted position.
