Vehicle movement restrictions premised on electronic keys
An ignition start system in which authentication of a key is carried out twice, first to activate the ignition switch to allow starting the engine and second at the time prior to moving the vehicle from a parked position. The two step authentication prevents driving off in a car that has been started without having the key for security purposes and also to avoid inconvenient situations that can otherwise occur.
1 . A vehicle, comprising:
a processor configured to authenticate a code; and
a vehicle movement activator,
wherein the processor is configured to perform a first code authentication with respect to a mobile electronic device to enable the vehicle to be started, and a second code authentication with respect to the mobile electronic device to enable movement of the vehicle out of a park position, and
wherein the vehicle movement activator is configured to be inoperable after starting the vehicle and deactivation of a brake system to prevent movement of the vehicle after the vehicle has been started, and wherein the vehicle movement activator is subsequently rendered operative after the vehicle has been started when (i) the brake system is activated after being deactivated after the vehicle is started and (ii) the second code authentication successfully detects the mobile electronic device.

The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the first code authentication comprises detection of the mobile electronic device within a vehicle passenger compartment, and wherein the second code authentication comprises detection of the mobile electronic device within the passenger compartment of the vehicle.
3 . The vehicle of claim 2 , wherein the mobile electronic device comprises an electronic key.
4 . The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the mobile electronic device comprises an electronic key.
5 . The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the mobile electronic device stores an electronic key, the electronic key is needed at the vehicle to satisfy the first code authentication, and the electronic key is needed at the vehicle to satisfy the first second code authentication.
6 . The vehicle of claim 5 , wherein the mobile electronic device is a key fob.
7 . The vehicle of claim 5 ,
wherein the first code authentication comprises detection of the mobile electronic device within a vehicle passenger compartment and authenticating the electronic key, and
wherein the second code authentication comprises detection of the mobile electronic device within the passenger compartment of the vehicle and authenticating the electronic key.
8 . A method for preventing a motor vehicle from being driven away without its associated electronic key being present, comprising:
providing the motor vehicle in a park mode with the motor vehicle not started;
detecting depression of a brake pedal of the motor vehicle while the motor vehicle is in the park mode;
checking for a first code authentication to determine whether a particular electronic key device linked to the motor vehicle is then present within the motor vehicle;
receiving a start request initiated by a user of the motor vehicle;
permitting, in response to the start request being received, the motor vehicle to be started if the checking of the first code authentication was successful provided that the detecting detects that the brake pedal is depressed;
starting the motor vehicle if the permitting determines that the motor vehicle is permitted to be started;
subsequently determining after the starting of the motor vehicle whether the brake pedal is no longer depressed;
requiring a second code authentication in order to permit the motor vehicle to be shifted from the park mode to a drive mode such that the motor vehicle is able to be driven to another location different than its present location, the requiring of the second code authentication being based at least on part on the determining operating to determine that after the starting of the motor vehicle the brake pedal is no longer depressed;
subsequently determining after the second key code authentication has been required, whether the brake pedal has been depressed while the motor vehicle is in the park mode;
checking for a second code authentication to determine whether a particular electronic key device linked to the motor vehicle is then present within the motor vehicle; and
subsequently, if the checking determines that the second code authentication was successful and provided that the brake pedal was determined after the second key code authentication has been required to be depressed, permitting the motor vehicle to be shifted from the park mode to a drive mode such that the motor vehicle is able to be driven to another location different than its present location.
9 . The method as recited in claim 8 , wherein the method comprises:
after the starting of the motor vehicle and provided that the brake pedal that was detected to be depressed prior to starting the motor vehicle has remained depressed, permitting the motor vehicle to be shifted from the park mode to a drive mode such that the motor vehicle is able to be driven to another location different than its present location without requiring the second code authentication therefor.
10 . The method as recited in claim 9 , wherein the particular electronic key device provides a first electronic key used for the first code authentication and a second electronic key used for the second code authentication.
11 . The method as recited in claim 9 , wherein the particular electronic key device provides an electronic key for use with the first code authentication and the second code authentication.
12 . The method as recited in claim 8 , wherein the method comprises:
subsequently, if the checking determines that the second code authentication was not successful, preventing the motor vehicle to be shifted from the park mode to a drive mode.
13 . The method as recited in claim 12 , wherein the method comprises:
after the starting of the motor vehicle and provided that the brake pedal that was detected to be depressed prior to starting the motor vehicle has remained depressed, permitting the motor vehicle to be shifted from the park mode to a drive mode such that the motor vehicle is able to be driven to another location different than its present location without requiring the second code authentication therefor.
14 . The method as recited in claim 13 , wherein the particular electronic key device provides a first electronic key used for the first code authentication and a second electronic key used for the second code authentication.
15 . The method as recited in claim 13 , wherein the particular electronic key device provides an electronic key for use with the first code authentication and the second code authentication.
16 . The method as recited in claim 13 , wherein the particular electronic key device used for the first code authentication is the same as the particular electronic key device used for the second code authentication.
17 . The method as recited in claim 13 , wherein the method comprises:
displaying a message to the user that the particular electronic key device is not detected if the checking determines that the second code authentication was unsuccessful.
18 . The method as recited in claim 13 ,
wherein the motor vehicle includes an antenna configured to detect wireless signals within the motor vehicle, and
wherein the checking for the second code authentication to determine whether the particular electronic key device linked to the motor vehicle is present within the motor vehicle uses the antenna to detect the wireless signals.
19 . The method as recited in claim 18 , wherein the method comprises:
after the starting of the motor vehicle and provided that the brake pedal that was detected to be depressed prior to starting the motor vehicle has remained depressed, permitting the motor vehicle to be shifted from the park mode to a drive mode such that the motor vehicle is able to be driven to another location different than its present location without performing the second code authentication.
20 . The method as recited in claim 19 , wherein the method comprises:
displaying a message to the user that the particular electronic key device is not detected if the checking determines that the second code authentication was unsuccessful.
21 . The method as recited in claim 20 , wherein the particular electronic key device used for the first code authentication is the same as the particular electronic key device used for the second code authentication.
22 . The method as recited in claim 8 , wherein the method comprises:
displaying a message to the user that the particular electronic key device is not detected if the checking determines that the second code authentication was unsuccessful.
23 . The method as recited in claim 22 , wherein the method comprises:
after the starting of the motor vehicle and provided that the brake pedal that was detected to be depressed prior to starting the motor vehicle has remained depressed, permitting the motor vehicle to be shifted from the park mode to a drive mode such that the motor vehicle is able to be driven to another location different than its present location without performing the second code authentication.
24 . The method as recited in claim 23 , wherein the providing the motor vehicle in the park mode with the motor vehicle not started comprises placing the motor vehicle in a park mode with the motor vehicle not started.
25 . A motor vehicle, comprising:
a brake pedal sensor operatively connected to a brake pedal;
a shifter lock; and
a controller operatively connected to the brake pedal sensor, and the shifter lock, the controller configured to prevent a motor vehicle from being driven away without its associated electronic key being present by carrying out the operations of:
providing the motor vehicle in a park mode with the motor vehicle not started;
detecting, via the brake pedal sensor, depression of the brake pedal of the motor vehicle while the motor vehicle is in the park mode;
checking for a first code authentication to determine whether a particular electronic key device linked to the motor vehicle is then present within the motor vehicle;
receiving a start request initiated by a user of the motor vehicle;
permitting, in response to the start request being received, the motor vehicle to be started if the checking of the first code authentication was successful provided that the detecting detects that the brake pedal is depressed;
starting the motor vehicle if the permitting determines that the motor vehicle is permitted to be started;
subsequently determining, via the brake pedal sensor, after the starting of the motor vehicle whether the brake pedal is no longer depressed;
requiring a second code authentication in order to permit the motor vehicle to be shifted from the park mode to a drive mode by unlocking the shifter lock, such that the motor vehicle is able to be driven to another location different than its present location, the requiring of the second code authentication being based at least in part on the determining operating to determine that after the starting of the motor vehicle the brake pedal is no longer depressed;
subsequently determining, via the brake pedal sensor, after the second key code authentication has been required, whether the brake pedal has been depressed while the motor vehicle is in the park mode;
checking for a second code authentication to determine whether a particular electronic key device linked to the motor vehicle is then present within the motor vehicle; and
subsequently, if the checking determines that the second code authentication was successful and provided that the brake pedal was determined after the second key code authentication has been required to be depressed, permitting the motor vehicle to be shifted from the park mode to a drive mode by unlocking the shifter lock, such that the motor vehicle is able to be driven to another location different than its present location.
26 . The motor vehicle as recited in claim 25 , wherein the controller is further configured to carry out the operation of:
after the starting of the motor vehicle and provided that the brake pedal that was detected to be depressed prior to starting the motor vehicle has remained depressed, permitting the motor vehicle to be shifted from the park mode to a drive mode with the shifter lock being unlocked, such that the motor vehicle is able to be driven to another location different than its present location without performing the second code authentication.
27 . The motor vehicle as recited in claim 26 , wherein the controller is further configured to carry out the operation of:
displaying a message to the user that the particular electronic key device is not detected if the checking determines that the second code authentication was unsuccessful.
