Abstract

Techniques for serving a manifest file of an adaptive streaming video include receiving a request for the manifest file from a user device. The video is encoded at different reference bitrates and each encoded reference bitrate is divided into segments to generate video segment files. The manifest file includes an ordered list of universal resource locators (URLs) that reference a set of video segment files encoded at a particular reference bitrate. A source manifest file that indicates the set of video segment files is identified based on the request. An issued manifest file that includes a first URL and a second URL is generated based on the source manifest file. The first URL references a first domain and the second URL references a second domain that is different from the first domain. The issued manifest file is transmitted to the user device as a response to the request.

Claims (43)

1 . A method for configuring and providing a manifest file for adaptive streaming video, comprising:

receiving, by a first infrastructure service provider, a content request from a recipient device for an adaptive streaming video;

obtaining, by the first infrastructure service provider, performance data from one or more separate infrastructure service providers, wherein:

each of the one or more separate infrastructure service providers:

operate as a separate service from the first infrastructure service provider; and

provides one or more content files containing at least a portion of the adaptive streaming video; and

the obtained performance data describes transmission of the one or more content files containing the at least the portion of the adaptive streaming video by the one or more separate infrastructure service providers to a plurality of recipient devices;

selecting, by the first infrastructure service provider based on the obtained performance data and in response to the content request from the recipient device, a second infrastructure service provider from the one or more separate infrastructure service providers to provide at least a portion of the adaptive streaming video; and

transmitting, by the first infrastructure service provider, information for obtaining a manifest file including one or more Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) referencing the one or more content files, where the one or more URLs are capable of being used by the recipient device to obtain the one or more content files from the selected second infrastructure service provider.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more content files comprises a video segment file.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the second infrastructure service provider comprises one of the one or more infrastructure service providers, and wherein at least some of the obtained performance data relates to the second infrastructure service provider.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the second infrastructure service provider is selected based on at least both: the obtained performance data; and at least one characteristic of the received request.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the second infrastructure service provider is selected based on at least both: the obtained performance data; and at least one characteristic of the one or more requested content files.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the at least one characteristic of the adaptive streaming video comprises at least one of: a request rate of the adaptive streaming video; or a content characteristic of the one or more requested content files.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining, with the first infrastructure service provider, based on the obtained performance data, performance metrics associated with the one or more infrastructure service providers operated as a separate service from the first infrastructure service provider.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein determining the performance metrics associated with the one or more infrastructure service providers operated as a separate service from the first infrastructure service provider comprises:

determining at least one of a bandwidth shift, a buffering event, or a server failure during the transmission of adaptive streaming video to one or more recipient devices; and

attributing the at least one of the bandwidth shift, buffering event, or server failure to one or more of the infrastructure service providers operated as a separate service from the first infrastructure service provider.

9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining, with the first infrastructure service provider, based on the obtained performance data, performance associated with an intermediate network.

10 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining, with the first infrastructure service provider, based on the obtained performance data, performance associated with a network coupled to a user's device receiving the manifest file.

11 . A system for configuring and providing manifest files for adaptive streaming video, the system comprising:

a first infrastructure service provider comprising at least one computer server, said at least one computer server in the first infrastructure service provider comprising:

a processing unit including one or more processors; and

memory coupled with and readable by the processing unit and storing therein a set of instructions which, when executed by the processing unit, causes the at least one computer server to:

receive a content request from a recipient device for an adaptive streaming video;

obtain performance data from one or more separate infrastructure service providers, wherein:

each of the one or more separate infrastructure service providers:

 operate as a separate service from the first infrastructure service provider; and

 provides one or more content files containing at least a portion of the adaptive streaming video; and

 the obtained data describes transmission of the one or more content files containing the at least the portion of the adaptive streaming video by the one or more separate infrastructure service providers to any of a plurality of recipient devices;

select, based on the obtained performance data and in response to the content request from the recipient device, a second infrastructure service provider from the one or more separate infrastructure service providers to provide at least a portion of the adaptive streaming video; and

transmit information for obtaining a manifest file including one or more Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) referencing the one or more content files, where the one or more URLs are capable of being used by the recipient device to obtain the one or more content files from the selected second infrastructure service provider.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein each of the one or more content files comprises a video segment file.

13 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the second infrastructure service provider comprises one of the one or more infrastructure service providers, and wherein at least some of the obtained performance data relates to the second infrastructure service provider.

14 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the second infrastructure service provider is selected based on at least both: the obtained performance data; and at least one characteristic of the received content requests.

15 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the second infrastructure service provider is selected based on at least both: the obtained performance data; and at least one characteristic of the one or more requested content files.

16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the at least one characteristic of the adaptive streaming video comprises at least one of: a request rate of the one or more requested content files; and a content characteristic of the one or more requested content files.

17 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the set of instructions which, when executed by the processing unit, further cause the at least one computer server to determine, based on the obtained performance data, performance metrics associated with the one or more infrastructure service providers operated as a separate service from the first infrastructure service provider.

18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein determining the performance metrics associated with the one or more infrastructure service providers operated as a separate service from the first infrastructure service provider comprises:

determining at least one of a bandwidth shift, a buffering event, or a server failure during the transmission of adaptive streaming video to one or more recipient devices; and

attributing the at least one of the bandwidth shift, buffering event, or server failure to one or more of the infrastructure service providers operated as a separate service from the first infrastructure service provider.

19 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the set of instructions which, when executed by the processing unit, further cause the at least one computer server to determine, based on the obtained performance data, performance associated with an intermediate network.

20 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the set of instructions which, when executed by the processing unit, further cause the at least one computer server to determine, based on the obtained performance data, performance associated with a network coupled to a user's device receiving the manifest file.
