Abstract

Claims (31)

1 . A venous access port assembly for implantation into a patient, the venous access port assembly comprising:

a needle-penetrable septum;

a housing comprising a housing base at least partially defining at least one reservoir; and

a bottom surface, the bottom surface comprising one or more X-ray discernable indicia at least partially cut or punched out of the bottom surface and wherein the one or more X-ray discernable indicia are shaped as letters or symbols provided in mirror-image orientation on the bottom surface and comprise the letters “C” and “T” in mirror-image orientation,

wherein the one or more X-ray discernable indicia are visible under X-ray examination when the assembly is subcutaneously implanted in a patient and indicate an orientation of the venous access port assembly after implantation and wherein the venous access port assembly is capable of withstanding pressures used during power injection of contrast fluid.

2 . The venous access port assembly of claim 1 , wherein the bottom surface includes a bottom surface of a base flange.

3 . The venous access port assembly of claim 2 , wherein the venous access port assembly is comprised at least partially of a radiopaque material.

4 . The venous access port assembly of claim 3 , wherein the one or more X-ray discernable indicia are voids in the bottom surface of the base flange.

5 . The venous access port assembly of claim 4 , wherein the bottom surface is comprised at least partially of the radiopaque material.

6 . The venous access port assembly of claim 5 , wherein the one or more X-ray discernable indicia extend completely through the radiopaque material.

7 . The venous access port assembly of claim 1 , wherein the housing further comprises a cap.

8 . The venous access port assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a radiotransparent or radiolucent skirt over molded about at least a portion of the housing.

9 . The venous access port assembly of claim 1 , wherein the one or more X-ray discernable indicia are at least partially within a region directly beneath the reservoir and septum.

10 . The venous access port assembly of claim 1 , wherein the one or more X-ray discernable indicia are directly beneath the reservoir and septum.

11 . A venous access port assembly for implantation into a patient, the venous access port assembly comprising:

a housing having a base of needle-impenetrable material that includes a well having a bottom floor, and side walls that define an interior reservoir, the housing further having a discharge port extending from the reservoir;

a needle-penetrable septum communicating with the housing, the reservoir being beneath the septum; and

a marking indicating a characteristic of the assembly and in the shape of letters comprising the letters “CT” in mirror-image orientation;

wherein the marking is in a bottom surface of said housing wherein the letters “CT” are at least partially embedded within said bottom surface, the marking being visible by X-ray examination when the assembly is subcutaneously implanted in a patient and the marking indicates an orientation of the venous access port assembly after implantation, and wherein the venous access port is capable of withstanding pressures used during power injection of contrast fluid.

12 . The venous access port assembly of claim 11 , wherein the housing comprises metal material.

13 . The venous access port assembly of claim 11 wherein the bottom floor is convex or elevated toward a center of the reservoir.

14 . The venous access port assembly of claim 11 , wherein the base includes a septum seat.

15 . The venous access port assembly of claim 14 , wherein the septum seat extends to a top of the well.

16 . The venous access port assembly of claim 11 , wherein the venous access port assembly is at least partially comprised of radiotransparent material.

17 . The venous access port assembly of claim 11 , wherein the bottom floor further includes suture openings.

18 . The venous access port assembly of claim 11 , wherein at least a portion of said marking is provided within a region directly beneath the reservoir and septum.

19 . A venous access port assembly for implantation into a patient, the venous access port assembly comprising:

a housing having a base of needle-impenetrable material that includes a well having a bottom floor, side walls that define an interior reservoir and a discharge port extending from the reservoir;

a needle-penetrable septum communicating with the housing, the reservoir being beneath the septum; and

a marking indicating a characteristic of the assembly;

wherein the marking is formed in the bottom floor, the marking being visible by X-ray examination when the assembly is subcutaneously implanted in a patient and being in the shape of letters “CT” in mirror-image orientation, and wherein the venous access port is capable of withstanding pressures used during power injection of contrast fluid.
