Abstract

A charging hub for a base station that is configured to receive an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) during docking. The charging hub is repositionable between a retracted position and an extended position and includes a charger subassembly, which is configured for electrical connection to the UAV, and a locking mechanism, which is pivotable in relation to the charger subassembly between a passive position and an active position and is configured for engagement with the UAV to thereby secure the charging hub to the UAV in the active position.

Claims (46)

1 . A charging hub for a base station configured to receive an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) during docking, wherein the charging hub is repositionable between a retracted position and an extended position and comprises:

a charger subassembly configured for electrical connection to the UAV; and

a locking mechanism repositionable in relation to the charger subassembly between a passive position, in which the locking mechanism is disengaged from the UAV, and an active position, in which the locking mechanism engages the UAV to thereby secure the charging hub to the UAV, wherein the locking mechanism is configured such that:

repositioning of the charging hub from the retracted position into the extended position repositions the locking mechanism from the passive position into the active position; and

repositioning of the charging hub from the extended position into the retracted position repositions the locking mechanism from the active position into the passive position to facilitate separation of the UAV and the charging hub.

2 . The charging hub of claim 1 , wherein the locking mechanism is pivotable between the active position and the passive position.

3 . The charging hub of claim 2 , wherein the locking mechanism is pivotable through a range of motion substantially within a range of approximately 30 degrees to approximately 60 degrees.

4 . The charging hub of claim 3 , wherein the locking mechanism includes limiters configured to confine the locking mechanism to the range of motion.

5 . The charging hub of claim 1 , wherein the locking mechanism is biased towards the passive position when the charging hub is in the retracted position, and the locking mechanism is biased towards the active position when the charging hub is in the extended position.

6 . The charging hub of claim 1 , wherein the locking mechanism includes:

a bail having a bail body with a first lateral end and a second lateral end;

bail supports receiving the bail body; and

biasing members connected to and extending between the bail supports and the charger subassembly.

7 . The charging hub of claim 6 , wherein the bail is captive to the bail supports.

8 . The charging hub of claim 6 , wherein the bail includes:

a first anchor defined by the first lateral end; and

a second anchor defined by the second lateral end, wherein the first anchor and the second anchor extend from the bail body and into the bail supports in generally opposite directions.

9 . The charging hub of claim 6 , wherein the bail supports include:

a first bail support connected to the first lateral end; and

a second bail support connected to the second lateral end, wherein the first bail support includes a first configuration, and the second bail support includes a second configuration mirroring the first configuration.

10 . The charging hub of claim 6 , wherein the bail supports include:

upper feet configured for engagement with the charger subassembly during movement of the charging hub towards the extended position to thereby facilitate repositioning of the locking mechanism from the passive position into the active position; and

lower feet configured for engagement with the charger subassembly during movement of the charging hub towards the retracted position to thereby facilitate repositioning of the locking mechanism from the active position into the passive position.

11 . A charging hub for a base station configured to receive an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) during docking, wherein the charging hub is repositionable between a retracted position and an extended position and comprises:

a charger subassembly configured for electrical connection to the UAV; and

a locking mechanism engageable with the UAV and repositionable between a passive position and an active position, wherein the locking mechanism is configured such that extension of the charging hub automatically repositions the locking mechanism from the passive position into the active position and such that retraction of the charging hub automatically repositions the locking mechanism from the active position into the passive position.

12 . The charging hub of claim 11 , wherein the locking mechanism is pivotable through a range of motion substantially within a range of approximately 30 degrees to approximately 60 degrees.

13 . The charging hub of claim 12 , wherein the locking mechanism includes limiters configured to confine the locking mechanism to the range of motion.

14 . The charging hub of claim 11 , wherein the locking mechanism is biased towards the passive position when the charging hub is in the retracted position.

15 . The charging hub of claim 14 , wherein the locking mechanism includes:

upper feet configured for engagement with the charger subassembly during movement of the charging hub towards the extended position to thereby facilitate repositioning of the locking mechanism from the passive position into the active position.

16 . The charging hub of claim 15 , wherein the locking mechanism is biased towards the active position when the charging hub is in the extended position.

17 . The charging hub of claim 16 , wherein the locking mechanism further includes:

lower feet configured for engagement with the charger subassembly during movement of the charging hub towards the retracted position to thereby facilitate repositioning of the locking mechanism from the active position into the passive position.

18 . A charging hub for a base station configured to receive an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) during docking, wherein the charging hub is repositionable between a retracted position and an extended position and comprises:

a charger subassembly configured for electrical connection to the UAV; and

a locking mechanism repositionable in relation to the charger subassembly from a passive position into an active position to thereby secure the charging hub to the UAV, wherein the locking mechanism includes:

a bail having a bail body with a first lateral end defining a first anchor and a second lateral end defining a second anchor, wherein the first anchor and the second anchor extend from the bail body in generally orthogonal relation thereto and in generally opposite directions;

a first bail support connected to the first anchor and including a first configuration;

a second bail support connected to the second anchor and including a second configuration mirroring the first configuration;

a first biasing member connected to and extending between the first bail support and the charger subassembly; and

a second biasing member connected to and extending between the second bail support and the charger subassembly.

19 . The charging hub of claim 18 , wherein the first biasing member and the second biasing member are configured such that repositioning of the charging hub from the retracted position into the extended position automatically repositions the locking mechanism from the passive position into the active position, and such that repositioning of the charging hub from the extended position into the retracted position automatically repositions the locking mechanism from the active position into the passive position.

20 . The charging hub of claim 18 , wherein the first bail support and the second bail support each include:

upper feet configured for engagement with the charger subassembly to facilitate repositioning of the locking mechanism from the passive position into the active position; and

lower feet configured for engagement with the charger subassembly to facilitate repositioning of the locking mechanism from the active position into the passive position.
