Abstract

Solar tracker systems include a torque tube, a column supporting the torque tube, a solar panel connected to the torque tube, and a damper assembly. The damper assembly includes a first end pivotably connected to the torque tube and a second end pivotably connected to the column. The damper assembly further includes an outer shell, a piston within and moveable relative to the outer shell, a first chamber wall and a second chamber wall within the outer shell at least partially defining a chamber, and a valve within the chamber. The valve includes a first axial end defining a slot and is biased to a first position within the chamber in which the first axial end is spaced from the first chamber wall. The valve is moveable within the chamber from the first position to a second position to passively change a flow resistance of the damper assembly.

. The solar tracker system of claim 1 , wherein the damper assembly defines a longitudinal axis extending through the first end and the second end, the shaft moving along an extension axis when moved between the unsealed and sealed positions, and wherein the extension axis is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

. The solar tracker system of claim 1 , wherein the damper assembly further comprises a controller assembly removably attached to the outer shell and extending outwards from the outer shell, the controller assembly comprising a drive operably engaged with the shaft to move the shaft between the sealed and unsealed positions.

. The solar tracker system of claim 3 , wherein the controller assembly extends outward from the outer shell in a direction that is parallel to an extension axis of the shaft.

. The solar tracker system of claim 4 , wherein the outer shell includes an active lock plate defining an aperture, the shaft extending into the outer shell through the aperture, and wherein the controller assembly is removably attached to the active lock plate.

. The solar tracker system of claim 1 , wherein the damper assembly further comprises a lock housing within the outer shell, the lock housing including the chamber wall and defining the chamber.

. The solar tracker system of claim 6 , wherein the lock housing further defines a first fluid passageway providing fluid communication between the chamber and the inner shell and a second fluid passageway extending from the chamber to the outer fluid channel.

. The solar tracker system of claim 7 , wherein the seal defines a first seal, the locking valve further comprising a second seal attached to the shaft that is in contact with and seals against the chamber wall when the shaft is in the sealed position.

. The solar tracker system of claim 8 , wherein the damper assembly further comprises an accumulator attached to the outer shell, the lock housing defining a third fluid passageway providing fluid communication with the accumulator, the third fluid passageway extending through a first opening defined in the chamber wall at a position on the chamber wall that is between the first seal and the second seal when the shaft is in the sealed position.

. The solar tracker system of claim 9 , wherein the locking valve further comprises a third seal attached to the shaft that is in contact with and seals against the chamber wall when the shaft is in both the sealed position and the unsealed position, the first fluid passageway extending through a second opening defined in the chamber wall at a position on the chamber wall that is between the first seal and the third seal when the shaft is in the sealed position.

. The solar tracker system of claim 1 , wherein the damper assembly defines a longitudinal axis extending through the first end and the second end, the shaft moving along an extension axis when moved between the unsealed and sealed positions, and wherein the extension axis is parallel to the longitudinal axis.

. The solar tracker system of claim 1 , wherein the damper assembly further comprises a lock housing within the outer shell and at least partially defining the chamber, the lock housing having an exterior face oriented to face the piston, the lock housing defining a first channel that extends through the exterior face of the lock housing and to the chamber, the lock housing further defining a second channel that extends from the chamber and to the outer fluid channel.
