Abstract

An enhanced performance field programmable gate array integrated circuit comprises a field programmable gate array and other functional circuitry such as a mask-programmable gate array in the same integrated circuit. A circuit interface provides communication between the field programmable gate array, the mask-programmable gate array and the integrated circuit I/O.

Claims (23)

1. An integrated circuit device comprising:

at least one field programmable gate array region and at least one mask-programmable gate array region;

an I/O system including I/O pads and associated driver circuits and an I/O interface including mask programmable elements; and

a user-programmable interconnect architecture for selectively making connections between said at least one field programmable gate array region, said at least one mask-programmable gate array region and said I/O system.

2. The integrated circuit device of claim 1 wherein the field programmable gate array region includes an array of universal programmable logic elements.

3. The integrated circuit system of claim 1 wherein the programmable elements in the I/O interface include direct interconnects.

4. The integrated circuit system of claim 1 wherein the programmable elements in the I/O interface include logic modules that control communication to and from the integrated circuit.

5. The integrated circuit system of claim 1 wherein the programmable elements in the I/O interface are field programmable elements.

6. The integrated circuit system of claim 1 further including a circuit interface between the field programmable gate array region and the mask programmable gate array region.

7. The integrated circuit system of claim 6 wherein tri-state buffers are programmable into the circuit interface between the field programmable gate array region and the mask programmable gate array region.

8. The integrated circuit system of claim 7 wherein high-voltage pass gates are programmable into the circuit interface between the field programmable gate array region and the mask programmable gate array region.

9. The integrated circuit system of claim 1 wherein the mask programmable gate array region is configurable as a decryption circuit.

10. The integrated circuit system of claim 1 wherein the mask programmable gate array region are programmable with a built-in test sequence for the field programmable gate array region.

11. The integrated circuit system of claim 1 wherein the mask programmable gate array region is configurable as a standardized interface between the field programmable gate array region and off-chip.

12. The integrated circuit system of claim 11 wherein the mask programmable gate array region is configurable as a bus interface.

13. The integrated circuit system of claim 12 wherein the mask programmable gate array region is configurable as a PCI bus.

14. The integrated circuit system of claim 12 wherein the mask programmable gate array region is configurable as a VME bus.

15. The integrated circuit system of claim 12 wherein the mask programmable gate array region is configurable as a USB bus.

16. The integrated circuit system of claim 11 wherein the mask programmable gate array region is configurable to perform a local area network function.

17. The integrated circuit system of claim 16 wherein the mask programmable gate array region is configurable to perform an Ethernet function.

18. The integrated circuit system of claim 16 wherein the mask programmable gate array region is configurable to perform a frame relay function.

19. The integrated circuit system of claim 16 wherein the mask programmable gate array region is configurable to perform an ATM function.

20. The integrated circuit system of claim 1 wherein the mask programmable gate array region is configurable as a high-drive, low skew clock driver for the field programmable gate array region.
