Abstract

A fuel cell system that employs a procedure for delaying an air purge of a fuel cell stack at system shut-down until the temperature of the stack is reduced below a predetermined temperature. The fuel cell stack includes an anode side, a cathode side, an anode input, a cathode input and an anode exhaust. The system includes a temperature sensor for monitoring the temperature of a cooling fluid flowing through the stack. The anode side of the fuel cell stack is purged at the stack shut-down by directing air from the cathode input line to the anode input line after the temperature of the cooling fluid is reduced to a predetermined temperature.

Claims (22)

1. A fuel cell system comprising:

a fuel cell stack including an anode side, a cathode side, an anode input, a cathode input and an anode exhaust;

a coolant loop for flowing a cooling fluid through the fuel cell stack;

a temperature sensor for sensing the temperature of the cooling fluid;

a purge valve coupled between the cathode input and the anode input, said purge valve directing air from the cathode input to the anode input at system shut-down to purge the anode side of the fuel cell stack; and

a controller, said controller receiving a temperature signal from the temperature sensor and controlling the purge valve, said controller maintaining the temperature of the cooling fluid at a first predetermined temperature during operation of the fuel cell stack and opening the purge valve at system shut-down after the temperature of the cooling fluid is reduced to a second predetermined temperature.

2. The system according to claim 1 further comprising an exhaust valve receiving the anode exhaust, said controller opening the exhaust valve at system shut-down to vent the purge air to the environment.

The system according to claim 1 further comprising a primary load switch and an auxiliary load switch, said controller opening the primary load switch and closing the auxiliary load switch at system shut-down to disconnect a primary load from the fuel cell stack and connect an auxiliary load to the fuel cell stack, said controller opening the auxiliary load switch when the purge valve is opened.

4. The system according to claim 3 further comprising a pump for pumping the cooling fluid through the fuel cell stack, wherein the pump is driven with power from the auxiliary load at the system shut-down.

5. The system according to claim 3 wherein the time it takes the auxiliary load to consume the remaining hydrogen is about the same as the time it takes the temperature of the cooling fluid to be reduced from the first temperature to the second temperature.

6. The system according to claim 1 wherein the second temperature is about 50° C. or less.

7. A fuel cell system comprising:

a fuel cell stack including an anode side, a cathode side, an anode input, a cathode input and an anode exhaust;

a coolant loop for flowing a cooling fluid through the fuel cell stack;

a pump for pumping the cooling fluid through the coolant loop;

a temperature sensor for sensing the temperature of the cooling fluid;

a purge valve coupled between the cathode input and the anode input, said purge valve directing air from the cathode input to the anode input at system shut-down to purge the anode side of the fuel cell stack;

an exhaust valve for receiving the anode exhaust; and

a controller, said controller receiving a temperature signal from the temperature sensor and controlling the purge valve, said controller maintaining the temperature of the cooling fluid at an operating temperature during operation of the fuel cell stack and opening the purge valve at the system shut-down after the temperature of the cooling fluid is reduced to a 50° C. or less, said controller opening the exhaust valve at system shut-down to vent the purge air to the environment.

The system according to claim 7 further comprising a primary load switch and an auxiliary load switch, said controller opening the primary load switch and closing the auxiliary load switch at system shut-down to disconnect a primary load from the fuel cell stack and connect an auxiliary load to the fuel cell stack, said controller opening the auxiliary load switch when the purge valve is opened.

9. The system according to claim 8 wherein the pump is driven with power from the auxiliary load at the system shut-down.

10. The system according to claim 8 wherein the time it takes the auxiliary load to consume the remaining hydrogen is about the same as the time it takes the temperature of the cooling fluid to be reduced from the operating temperature to 50° C. or less.
