Abstract

A system and method for improving fuel cell system start-up reliability. The method includes determining if the resistance of the membranes in a fuel cell stack is too high, where the reliability of system start-up will be reduced, and if so, providing one or more remedial actions to help ensure that the start-up is more reliable. In one embodiment, the system and method determine that the fuel cell membranes are too dry based on the time that has gone by since the last shut-down. If the time threshold has been exceeded, a special start-up procedure is used that increases the reliability that the start-up will be successful using the remedial actions, such as reducing cathode airflow and turning on stack end cell heaters.

Claims (29)

1 . A method for reliably starting a fuel cell system including a fuel cell stack, said method comprising:

determining whether membranes in the fuel cell stack are too dry to effectively conduct protons; and

performing one or more remedial actions that prevents the membranes within the fuel cell stack from further drying out if it is determined that the membranes in the fuel cell stack are too dry to effectively conduct protons.

2 . The method according to claim 1 wherein determining whether membranes in the fuel cell stack are too dry to effectively conduct protons includes determining whether the stack has been shut down longer than a predetermined time threshold, and if so, determining that the membranes in the fuel cell stack are too dry to effectively conduct protons.

3 . The method according to claim 2 wherein the time threshold is 72 hours.

4 . The method according to claim 1 wherein performing one or more remedial actions includes limiting a flow of air to the cathode side of the fuel cell stack.

5 . The method according to claim 4 wherein limiting the flow of air to the cathode side of the fuel cell stack includes providing a cathode side air flow in the range of 5-10 grams/seconds.

6 . The method according to claim 1 wherein performing one or more remedial actions includes turning on end cell heaters in the fuel cell stack.

7 . The method according to claim 1 wherein performing one or more remedial actions includes connecting an internal stack load across the stack.

8 . The method according to claim 1 wherein the fuel cell stack is split into sub-stacks.

9 . A method for reliably starting a fuel cell system including a fuel cell stack, said method comprising:

determining whether the stack has been shut down longer than a predetermined time threshold;

determining that the membranes in the fuel cell stack are too dry to effectively conduct protons if the stack has been shut down longer than the predetermined time threshold;

limiting the flow of air to the cathode side of the fuel cell stack if the stack has been shut down longer than the predetermined time threshold; and

turning on end cell heaters in the fuel cell stack if the stack has been shut down longer than the predetermined time threshold.

10 . The method according to claim 9 wherein the time threshold is 72 hours.

11 . The method according to claim 9 wherein limiting the flow of air to the cathode side of the fuel cell stack includes providing a cathode side air flow in the range of 5-10 grams/seconds.

12 . The method according to claim 9 wherein the fuel cell stack is split into sub-stacks.

13 . A fuel cell system comprising:

a fuel cell stack;

a compressor for providing cathode input air to a cathode side of the fuel cell stack; and

a controller, said controller controlling the speed of the compressor, said controller determining whether membranes in the fuel cell stack are too dry to effectively conduct protons, and if so, causing one or more remedial actions to be performed that prevents the membranes within the fuel cell stack from further drying out.

14 . The system according to claim 13 wherein the controller determines whether membranes in the fuel cell stack are too dry to effectively conduct protons by determining whether the stack has been shut down longer than a predetermined time threshold, and if so, determining that the membranes in the fuel cell stack are too dry to effectively conduct protons.

15 . The system according to claim 14 wherein the time threshold is 72 hours.

16 . The system according to claim 13 further comprising end cell heaters provided within end cells of the fuel cell stack, said controller turning on and electrically ramping up the end cell heaters to provide a load on the stack that allows current to be drawn from the stack so that the stack produces humidity as one of the remedial actions.

17 . The system according to claim 14 wherein the controller limits the speed of the compressor as one of the remedial actions.

18 . The system according to claim 17 wherein the controller limits the speed of the compressor so that the compressor provides 5 to 10 grams/second of air.

19 . The system according to claim 14 further comprising a load selectively electrically coupled across the stack, said controller switching on the load to allow current to be drawn from the stack so that the stack produces humidity as one of the remedial actions.

20 . The system according to claim 14 wherein the fuel cell stack is split into sub-stacks.
