Abstract

The present invention provides for a construction for a bipolar plate for a fuel cell stack that enables the bipolar plate to be a more compliant member in the fuel cell stack. The bipolar plate can be configured to provide varying levels of compliance, as demanded by the design of the fuel cell stack. The bipolar plate can be more compliant than the diffusion media members and the active elements used to form the individual fuel cells. The compliant nature of the individual bipolar plates enables localized dimensional changes that occur within the fuel cell stack to be compensated by a localized deformation of the portions of the bipolar plate within that region. The bipolar plate has an internal coolant flow field where some opposing pairs of lands are spaced apart with a gap therebetween while other opposing pairs of lands are in contact with one another.

Claims (27)

A method of maintaining a compression of a fuel cell stack in a predetermined range during dimensional changes in fuel cells of the fuel cell stack, the fuel cell stack being compressed to an initial compressive state, the fuel cell stack including a plurality of bipolar plates with at least one diffusion media member compressed between a pair of adjacent bipolar plates, the method comprising:

(a) operating the fuel cell stack to meet a power demand placed on the fuel cell stack; and

(b) compensating for dimensional changes with at least one of the bipolar plates thereby maintaining the compression of the fuel cell stack within the predetermined range; and

(c) creating said at least one bipolar plate of first and second sheets each having alternating lands and channels, said at least one bipolar plate having an internal flow field at least partially defined by a plurality of opposing pairs of said lands of said first and second sheets with some of said opposing pairs of lands in contact with one another and others of said opposing pairs of lands spaced apart with a gap therebetween.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein (b) includes deforming said at least one of the bipolar plates from an initial state corresponding to said initial compressive state in response to said dimensional changes.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein (b) includes elastically deforming said at least one of the bipolar plates.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein (b) includes compensating for dimensional changes with said at least one bipolar plate having a compliance at least as large as one half of a compliance of at least one of said diffusion media members.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein (b) includes compensating for dimensional changes with said at least one bipolar plate having a compliance at least as large as a compliance of at least one of said diffusion media members.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein (c) includes altering said gap between said spaced apart opposing pairs of lands to compensate for said dimensional changes.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least two of said bipolar plates each have said internal flow field and said gaps in a first one of said at least two bipolar plates are offset from said gaps in a second one of said at least two bipolar plates and (b) includes altering said gaps between said spaced apart opposing pairs of lands in said at least two bipolar plates.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fuel cell stack includes at least one active element compressed between a pair of adjacent bipolar plates and (b) includes compensating for dimensional changes caused by swelling and shrinking of said active element.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein (b) includes compensating for dimensional changes caused by a changing temperature of the fuel cells.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein (b) includes compensating for localized dimensional changes with localized deformation of at least one of the bipolar plates.

11. A method of maintaining a compression of a fuel cell stack in a predetermined range during dimensional changes in fuel cells of the fuel cell stack, the fuel cell stack being compressed to an initial compressive state, the fuel cell stack including a plurality of bipolar plates with at least one diffusion media member compressed between a pair of adjacent bipolar plates, the bipolar plates having an anode side, a cathode side, and an internal cavity between said anode and cathodes sides with a flow field therein, said flow field being at least partially defined by opposing pairs of lands and opposing pairs of channels between said lands, the method comprising:

(a) operating the fuel cell stack to meet a power demand placed on the fuel cell stack;

(b) compensating for dimensional changes with at least one of the bipolar plates by altering a gap between opposing pairs of lands individually created in first and second sheets of said at least one bipolar plate while maintaining contact between others of said opposing pairs of lands of said first and second sheets thereby maintaining the compression of the fuel cell stack within the predetermined range.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein altering said gap between opposing pairs of lands includes elastically deforming at least one of the bipolar plates.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein (b) includes compensating for dimensional changes with a plurality of bipolar plates by altering gaps between opposing pairs of lands in the plurality of bipolar plates.

(a) operating the fuel cell stack to meet a power demand placed on the fuel cell stack;

(b) compensating for dimensional changes with at least one of the bipolar plates having a compliance greater than about one half of a compliance of the at least one diffusion media member thereby maintaining the compression of the fuel cell stack within the predetermined range and with said at least one of the bipolar plates having first and second sheets each having lands, with opposing pairs of the lands in contact with one another and other opposing pairs of the lands that are spaced apart having a gap therebetween, the opposing pairs of the lands having the gap being elastically deflectable.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein (b) includes compensating for dimensional changes with at least one of the bipolar plates having a compliance at least as large as said compliance of the at least one diffusion media member thereby maintaining the compression of the fuel cell stack within the predetermined range.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the fuel cell stack includes at least one active element compressed between a pair of adjacent bipolar plates and (b) includes compensating for dimensional changes caused by swelling and shrinking of said active element with at least one of the bipolar plates having a compliance greater than a compliance of said active element thereby maintaining the compression of the fuel cell stack within the predetermined range.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the at least one of the bipolar plates includes a span between opposing pairs of lands that are in contact providing said compliance of said bipolar plate.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein (b) includes elastically deforming and altering said gap of said at least one of the bipolar plates having said span.

19. The method of claim 17 , further comprising changing a width of the span between the opposing pairs of lands in contact with each other to effect a compliance of the bipolar plate by interposing opposing pairs of the lands having the gap therebetween between adjacent opposing pairs of the lands in contact with each other.

20. The method of claim 17 , further comprising increasing the span by creating a group of at least two opposing pairs of the lands with said gaps between opposing pairs of the lands that are in contact with each other.
