Abstract

A field programmable gate array (FPGA) having hierarchical interconnect structure is disclosed. The FPGA includes logic heads that have signals routed therebetween by the interconnect structure. Each logic head includes a plurality of cascadable logic blocks that can perform combinatorial logic. The logic head can further be fractured into two independent logical units.

Claims (11)

1. A logic block that can perform two-input combinatorial logic comprising:

a first transmission gate controlled by a second input to said logic block;

a second transmission gate controlled by said second input to said logic block, said second transmission gate having as its input a first input to said logic block, wherein:

based upon said second input to said logic block, the logic block outputs the signal passed by either said first or second transmission gate;

the passed signal is selected from the group consisting of the first input, a low logic signal, a high logic signal, and their inverses;

the first input, the low logic signal, and the high logic signal can be selectively routed to the output through the first transmission gate; and

the first input, the low logic signal, the high logic signal, and their inverses can be selectively routed to the output through said second transmission gate.

2. The logic block of claim 1 further comprising a first inverter for selectively inverting said first input to said logic block prior to provision to said second transmission gate and a second inverter for selectively inverting said second input of said logic block.

3. The logic block of claim 1 wherein three switches connect the first input, the low logic signal, and the high logic signals to the first transmission gate.

4. The logic block of claim 1 wherein a switch connected in parallel with a series combination of another switch and an inverter are used to connect the first input to the second transmission gate.

5. The logic block of claim 1 wherein the second input signal controls the first and the second transmission gates through a switch connected in parallel with a series combination of another switch and an inverter.
