Abstract

Semiconductor devices provide for synchronous transfer of information through a data bus. Address, control and clock information is received, via a command bus and clock line, at a plurality of terminals, the command bus and clock line providing a source synchronous bus. A plurality of output drivers drive read data onto a plurality of terminals coupled to a data bus.

Claims (45)

1. A semiconductor device for synchronous transfer of information, the semiconductor device comprising:

a) a plurality of terminals to couple to a source synchronous bus having address and control lines to carry address signals and control signals, and a clock line to carry a clock signal that is sourced with the address signals and the control signals, the plurality of terminals including

at least a first terminal to couple to the clock line that is capable of carrying the clock signal to the device;

a plurality of second terminals to couple to the address and control lines to provide the address signals and the control signals to the device;

b) input receivers to receive said clock signal, said address signals and said control signals from said first and second terminals;

c) a plurality of third terminals to couple to a data bus;

d) a plurality of open drain output drivers to drive read data onto said third terminals; and

e) input latches to latch the address and control signals based on the clock signal.

2. The semiconductor device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the semiconductor device is a semiconductor memory device.

3. The semiconductor device as claimed in claim 2 wherein the semiconductor memory device is a Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) device.

4. The semiconductor device as claimed in claim 3 wherein said data bus is a bidirectional bus providing write data to the DRAM device.

5. The semiconductor device as claimed in claim 3 wherein said open drain output drivers include n-channel pull-down transistors.

6. The semiconductor device as claimed in claim 3 further comprising a synchronization pattern generator.

7. The semiconductor device as claimed in claim 6 wherein said synchronization pattern generator provides a synchronization signal to said open drain output drivers for driving said synchronization signal onto said third terminals.

8. The semiconductor device as claimed in claim 7 wherein said synchronization signal is a pseudo random sequence.

9. The semiconductor device as claimed in claim 8 wherein said pseudo random sequence is ‘1011000’.

10. A controller for synchronous transfer of data, the controller comprising:

a) a plurality of terminals to couple to a source synchronous bus having address and control lines to carry address signals and control signals, and a clock line to carry a clock signal that is sourced with the address signals and the control signals, the plurality of terminals including

at least a first terminal to couple to the clock line that is capable of carrying the clock signal transmitted from the controller;

a plurality of second terminals to couple to the address and control lines that are capable of carrying, from the controller, the address signals and the control signals to provide address and control information;

b) a plurality of first output drivers to drive said clock signal, said address signals and said control signals onto said first and second terminals;

c) a plurality of third terminals to couple to a data bus; and

d) a plurality of second output drivers to drive write data onto said third terminals, said second output drivers being open drain output drivers.

11. The controller as claimed in claim 10 wherein the controller is a semiconductor memory controller.

12. The controller as claimed in claim 11 wherein said data bus is a bidirectional bus providing read data to the controller.

13. The controller as claimed in claim 11 wherein said first output drivers include n-channel pull-down transistors.

14. The controller as claimed in claim 11 wherein said second output drivers include n-channel pull-down transistors.

15. The controller as claimed in claim 11 further comprising a synchronization pattern generator.

16. The controller as claimed in claim 15 wherein said synchronization pattern generator provides a synchronization signal to said second output drivers for driving said synchronization signal onto said third terminals.

17. The controller as claimed in claim 16 wherein said synchronization signal is a pseudo random sequence.

18. The controller as claimed in claim 17 wherein said pseudo random sequence is ‘1011000’.

19. The controller as claimed in claim 11 wherein the semiconductor memory controller is a Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) controller.

20. A Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) system comprising:

a) at least one DRAM device including open drain output drivers;

b) a DRAM controller device including open drain output drivers;

c) a source synchronous bus to carry, from said DRAM controller device to said DRAM device, a clock signal, address signals to provide address information and control signals to provide control information, the source synchronous bus having address and control lines to carry the address signals and the control signals, and a clock line to carry the clock signal that is sourced with the address signals and the control signals;

d) a bidirectional data bus to provide write data from said DRAM controller device to said DRAM device, and to provide read data from said DRAM device to said DRAM controller device, said drivers of said DRAM controller and DRAM devices to drive write and read data, respectively, onto said data bus; and

e) input latches in the DRAM device to latch the address and control signals based on the clock signal.

21. The DRAM system as claimed in claim 20 further comprising at least one power supply electrically connected to said open drain output drivers of a selected one of the DRAM device and the DRAM controller device.

22. The DRAM system as claimed in claim 21 wherein said open drain output drivers of the selected one of the devices include n-channel pull-down transistors, and said power supply is a Vss ground power supply electrically connected to the sources of said n-channel pull-down transistors.

23. The DRAM system as claimed in claim 20 wherein said DRAM device includes a synchronization pattern generator.

24. The DRAM system as claimed in claim 23 wherein said synchronization pattern generator provides a synchronization signal to said data bus.

25. The DRAM system as claimed in claim 24 wherein said synchronization signal is a pseudo random sequence.

26. The DRAM system as claimed in claim 25 wherein said pseudo random sequence is ‘1011000’.

27. The semiconductor device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the of open drain output drivers receives an output enable signal.
