Abstract

In one embodiment of the invention, a replaceable memory apparatus is disclosed. The replaceable memory apparatus includes a first rectangular multilayer printed circuit board having a first side and a second side opposite the first side; a first male pluggable electrical connector mounted to the first side near a first edge; a first female pluggable electrical connector mounted to the second side; and first non-volatile memory mounted to the first side and the second side. The first female pluggable electrical connector is coupled to the first male pluggable electrical connector to feed through first signals. The first non-volatile memory is coupled to the first female pluggable electrical connector and the first male pluggable electrical connector to receive the first signals.

Claims (104)

1. A replaceable memory apparatus comprising:

a first rectangular multilayer printed circuit board having a first side and a second side opposite the first side;

a first male pluggable electrical connector mounted to the first side near a first edge to receive first signals;

a first female pluggable electrical connector mounted to the first side near a second edge opposite the first edge to receive second signals;

a second female pluggable electrical connector mounted to the second side near the first edge, the second female pluggable electrical connector coupled to the first male pluggable electrical connector to feed through the first signals from the first side to the second side;

a second male pluggable electrical connector mounted to the second side near the second edge, the second male pluggable electrical connector coupled to the first female pluggable electrical connector to feed through the second signals from the first side to the second side; and

first read-writeable non-volatile memory mounted to the first side and the second side, the first read-writeable non-volatile memory coupled to the second female pluggable electrical connector and the first male pluggable electrical connector to receive the first signals.

2. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

second read-writeable non-volatile memory mounted to the first side and the second side of the first rectangular multilayer printed circuit board, the second read-writeable non-volatile memory coupled to the second male pluggable electrical connector and the first female pluggable electrical connector to receive the second signals.

3. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 2 , wherein

the first non-volatile memory differs from the second non-volatile memory.

4. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 2 , further comprising:

one or more support integrated circuits mounted to the first rectangular multilayer printed circuit board to uniquely identify the first rectangular multilayer printed circuit board and the non-volatile memory mounted thereto and/or multiplex signals between the first and second read-writeable non-volatile memory and the first male and female connectors.

5. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 4 , wherein

the one or more support integrated circuits further to transparently buffer and combine non-volatile memory access operations together to increase memory bandwidth with the first and second read-writeable non-volatile memory.

6. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a second rectangular multilayer printed circuit board having a first side and a second side opposite the first side;

a third male pluggable electrical connector mounted to the first side of the second rectangular multilayer printed circuit board near a first edge, the third male pluggable electrical connector to plug into the second female pluggable electrical connector to receive signals from the first rectangular multilayer printed circuit board;

a third female pluggable electrical connector mounted to the first side of the second rectangular multilayer printed circuit board near a second edge opposite the first edge, the third female pluggable electrical connector to plug onto the second male pluggable electrical connector to receive signals from the first rectangular multilayer printed circuit board; and

second read-writeable non-volatile memory mounted to the first side and the second side of the second rectangular multilayer printed circuit board, the second read-writeable non-volatile memory coupled to the third female pluggable electrical connector and/or the third male pluggable electrical connector.

7. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 6 , further comprising:

a fourth female pluggable electrical connector mounted to the second side near the first edge, the fourth female pluggable electrical connector coupled to the third male pluggable electrical connector to feed through the first signals from the first side to the second side;

a fourth male pluggable electrical connector mounted to the second side near the second edge, the fourth male pluggable electrical connector coupled to the third female pluggable electrical connector to feed through the second signals from the first side to the second side;

a third rectangular multilayer printed circuit board having a first side and a second side opposite the first side;

a fifth male pluggable electrical connector mounted to the first side of the third rectangular multilayer printed circuit board near a first edge, the fifth male pluggable electrical connector to plug into the fourth female pluggable electrical connector to receive signals from the first and second rectangular multilayer printed circuit boards;

a fifth female pluggable electrical connector mounted to the first side of the second rectangular multilayer printed circuit board near a second edge opposite the first edge, the fifth female pluggable electrical connector to plug onto the fourth male pluggable electrical connector to receive signals from the first rectangular multilayer printed circuit board; and

third read-writeable non-volatile memory mounted to the first side and the second side of the third rectangular multilayer printed circuit board, the third read-writeable non-volatile memory coupled to the fifth male pluggable electrical connector and/or the fifth female pluggable electrical connector.

8. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 7 , further comprising:

one or more support integrated circuits mounted to the first and second, and third rectangular multilayer printed circuit boards to uniquely identify the first and second rectangular multilayer printed circuit boards and the first and second read-writeable non-volatile memory mounted thereto and/or multiplex signals between the first and second read-writeable non-volatile memory and the electrical connectors.

9. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 8 , wherein

the one or more support integrated circuits further to transparently buffer and combine non-volatile memory access operations together to increase memory bandwidth with the first and second read-writeable non-volatile memory.

10. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 6 , further comprising:

one or more support integrated circuits mounted to the first and second rectangular multilayer printed circuit boards to uniquely identify the first and second rectangular multilayer printed circuit boards.

11. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 10 , wherein

the one or more support integrated circuits further to transparently buffer and combine non-volatile memory access operations together to increase memory bandwidth with the first and second read-writeable non-volatile memory.

12. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 1 , wherein

the first read-writeable non-volatile memory is NAND flash memory, NOR flash memory, or phase change memory.

13. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 1 , wherein

the pluggable electrical connectors are mounted perpendicular to the sides of the printed circuit board.

14. A replaceable memory apparatus, comprising: a first rectangular multilayer printed circuit board having a first side and a second side opposite the first side;

a first male pluggable electrical connector mounted to the first side near a first edge;

a first female pluggable electrical connector mounted to the second side, the first female pluggable electrical connector coupled to the first male pluggable electrical connector to feed through first signals; and

first read-writeable non-volatile memory mounted to the first side and the second side, the first read-writeable non-volatile memory coupled to the first female pluggable electrical connector and the first male pluggable electrical connector to receive the first signals; and

one or more support integrated circuits mounted to the first rectangular multilayer printed circuit board, wherein the one or more support integrated circuits to uniquely identify the first rectangular multilayer printed circuit board, and wherein the one or more support integrated circuits further to identify the read-writeable non-volatile memory mounted to the first rectangular multilayer printed circuit board.

15. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 14 , wherein

the one or more support integrated circuits further to multiplex signals between the first non-volatile memory and the first male and female pluggable electrical connectors.

16. A replaceable memory apparatus comprising:

a first rectangular multilayer printed circuit board having a first side and a second side opposite the first side;

a first male pluggable electrical connector mounted to the first side near a first edge;

a first female pluggable electrical connector mounted to the second side, the first female pluggable electrical connector coupled to the first male pluggable electrical connector to feed through first signals;

first non-volatile memory mounted to the first side and the second side, the first non-volatile memory coupled to the first female pluggable electrical connector and the first male pluggable electrical connector to receive the first signals; and

one or more support integrated circuits mounted to the first rectangular multilayer printed circuit board, wherein the one or more support integrated circuits to transparently buffer and combine non-volatile memory access operations together to increase memory bandwidth with the non-volatile memory.

17. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 16 , wherein

the one or more support integrated circuits further to uniquely identify the first rectangular multilayer printed circuit board, and

the one or more support integrated circuits further to identify the non-volatile memory mounted to the first rectangular multilayer printed circuit board.

18. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 17 , wherein

the one or more support integrated circuits further to multiplex signals between the first non-volatile memory and the first male and female pluggable electrical connectors.

19. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 16 , further comprising:

a second rectangular multilayer printed circuit board having a first side and a second side opposite the first side;

a second male pluggable electrical connector mounted to the first side of the second rectangular multilayer printed circuit board near a first edge, the second male pluggable electrical connector to plug into the first female pluggable electrical connector to receive signals from the first rectangular multilayer printed circuit; and

second non-volatile memory mounted to the first side and the second side, the second non-volatile memory coupled to the second male pluggable electrical connector.

20. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 19 , further comprising:

one or more support integrated circuits mounted to the second rectangular multilayer printed circuit board to uniquely identify the second rectangular multilayer printed circuit board and the non-volatile memory mounted thereto and/or multiplex signals between the non-volatile memory and the second male pluggable connector and the first female pluggable connector.

21. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 20 , wherein

the one or more support integrated circuits further mounted to the second rectangular multilayer printed circuit boards to transparently buffer and combine non-volatile memory access operations together to increase memory bandwidth with the non-volatile memory.

22. A replaceable memory apparatus comprising:

a first square multilayer printed circuit board with a first side and a second side opposite the first side, the first square multilayer printed circuit board having signal lines on a plurality of layers;

a first female pluggable electrical connector mounted to the first side near a first edge;

a first male pluggable electrical connector mounted to the first side near a second edge opposite the first edge; and

first read-writeable non-volatile memory mounted to the first side, the first read-writeable non-volatile memory mounted to the first side coupled to the first female pluggable electrical connector and the first male pluggable electrical connector to couple to the signal lines.

23. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 22 , further comprising:

a second male pluggable electrical connector mounted to the second side of the first square multilayer printed circuit board near the first edge, the first male pluggable electrical connector coupled to the first female pluggable electrical connector to feed through the signal lines;

a second female pluggable electrical connector mounted to the first side of the first square multilayer printed circuit board near the second edge, the second female pluggable electrical connector coupled to the first male pluggable electrical connector to feed through the signal lines; and

second read-writeable non-volatile memory mounted to the second side of the first square multilayer printed circuit board, the second read-writeable non-volatile memory coupled to the second female pluggable electrical connector and the second male pluggable electrical connector to receive the feed through signal lines.

24. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 23 , further comprising:

a second square multilayer printed circuit board having a first side and a second side opposite the first side;

a third female pluggable electrical connector mounted to the first side of the second square multilayer printed circuit board near a first edge, the second female pluggable electrical connector to plug onto the second male pluggable electrical connector to receive signals from the first square multilayer printed circuit board;

a third male pluggable electrical connector mounted to the first side of the second square multilayer printed circuit board near a first edge, the second male pluggable electrical connector to plug into the second female pluggable electrical connector to receive signals from the first square multilayer printed circuit board; and

third read-writeable non-volatile memory mounted to the first side of the second square multilayer printed circuit board, the third read-writeable non-volatile memory coupled to the third male pluggable electrical connector and the third female pluggable electrical connector to signals from the first square multilayer printed circuit board.

25. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 24 , further comprising:

a fourth male pluggable electrical connector mounted to the second side of the second square multilayer printed circuit board near the first edge, the fourth male pluggable electrical connector coupled to the third female pluggable electrical connector to feed through signals from the first side to the second side of the second square multilayer printed circuit board; and

a fourth female pluggable electrical connector mounted to the second side of the second square multilayer printed circuit board near the second edge, the fourth female pluggable electrical connector coupled to the third male pluggable electrical connector to feed through the signal lines from the first side to the second side of the second square multilayer printed circuit board.

26. A replaceable memory apparatus comprising:

a first rectangular multilayer printed circuit board having a first side and a second side opposite the first side, the first rectangular multilayer printed circuit board having signal lines on a plurality of layers;

a first pluggable electrical connector mounted to the first side near a first edge of the first rectangular multilayer printed circuit board, the first pluggable electrical connector having a first type of gender;

a second pluggable electrical connector mounted to the first side near a second edge of the first rectangular multilayer printed circuit board opposite the first edge, the first pluggable electrical connector having a second type of gender opposite the first type of gender;

a third pluggable electrical connector mounted to the second side of the rectangular multilayer printed circuit board near the first edge and having the second type of gender, the third pluggable electrical connector coupled to the first pluggable electrical connector to feed through first signals;

a fourth pluggable electrical connector mounted to the second side of the rectangular multilayer printed circuit board near the second edge and having the first type of gender, the fourth pluggable electrical connector coupled to the second pluggable electrical connector to feed through second signals; and

first read-writeable non-volatile memory mounted to the first side, the first read-writeable non-volatile memory coupled to the first pluggable electrical connector to receive the first signals.

27. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 26 , wherein

the first type of gender is a male type of gender;

the first pluggable electrical connector is a first male pluggable electrical connector and the fourth pluggable electrical connector is a second male pluggable electrical connector;

the second type of gender is a female type of gender; and

the second pluggable electrical connector is a first female pluggable electrical connector and the third pluggable electrical connector is a second female pluggable electrical connector.

28. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 26 , wherein

the first type of gender is a female type of gender and the first pluggable electrical connector is a female pluggable electrical connector; and

the second type of gender is a male type of gender and the second pluggable electrical connector is a male pluggable electrical connector.

29. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 26 , further comprising:

second non-volatile memory mounted to the second side, the second non-volatile memory coupled to the third pluggable electrical connector to receive the first signals.

30. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 26 , further comprising:

second read-writeable non-volatile memory mounted to the second side, the second read-writeable non-volatile memory coupled to the fourth pluggable electrical connector to receive the second signals.

31. The replaceable memory apparatus of claim 30 , wherein

the read-writeable first non-volatile memory are further coupled to the second pluggable electrical connector to receive the second signals, and

the second read-writeable non-volatile memory are further coupled to the third pluggable electrical connector to receive the first signals.
