Abstract

A personal area network (PAN) devices use a wireless medium shared with a wireless local area network (WLAN). WLAN devices communicate using WLAN protocols and PAN devices communicate using PAN protocols, allowing for lower power transmissions over the wireless medium relative to transmissions over the WLAN. A PAN coordinator device obtains access to the wireless medium for the PAN devices by signalling a reservation of the medium by the PAN coordinator device, such that the other devices defer use of the wireless medium, including at least one WLAN device, for a reservation period. During the reservation period, communication uses the PAN protocol. The signalling can be implicit such as a standard or modified HCCA-CF poll frame, a CTS frame with an increased duration field, or other variation. A PAN coordinator might also signal an access point to set up a DLS link with the PAN coordinator.

Claims (46)

1. A method comprising:

at a first time, communicating by a coordinating device, timing and scheduling information to a personal area network (PAN) device, where the timing and scheduling information is used to determine a service period;

powering off all or a portion of circuitry of the coordinating device to reduce power consumption of the coordinating device;

at a second time following the first time, determining a start of the service period;

powering on all or a portion of the powered-off circuitry of the coordinating device to enable communication with a wireless local area network (WLAN);

transmitting a signal detectable by WLAN devices, the signal requesting the WLAN devices to defer access to a wireless medium for a reservation period, where the signal is transmitted by transmitting one or more frames using an overlay PAN protocol that is at least partially compliant with WLAN protocol; and

communicating with the PAN device over the wireless medium during the reservation period using the overlay PAN protocol.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more frames using the overlay PAN protocol comprises a frame directed to a PAN device having an increased duration field.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the WLAN is an 802.11 network and one or more frames using the overlay PAN protocol comprises an 802.11 data frame, or a modification thereof, directed to a PAN device and having the increased duration field.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the one or more frames using the overlay PAN protocol comprises an 802.11 CTS (“Clear-to-Send”) frame with the increased duration field.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the one or more frames using the overlay PAN protocol comprises an 802.11 frame or modification thereof, transmitted using a highest priority queue.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein the one or more frames using the overlay PAN protocol comprises an HCCA-CF (“Hybrid coordination function, controlled channel access-contention free”) poll frame having a plurality of subtype fields including a data subtype field and a poll subtype field, wherein the HCCA-CF poll frame is sent with the data subtype field cleared and the poll subtype field set.

7. The method of claim 2 , wherein the one or more frames using the overlay PAN protocol comprises a modified HCCA-CF (“Hybrid coordination function, controlled channel access-contention free”) poll frame partially compliant with a WLAN standard, the modified HCCA-CF poll frame having a plurality of subtype fields including a data subtype field and a poll subtype field, wherein the HCCA-CF poll frame is sent with the data subtype field cleared and the poll subtype field set.

8. The method of claim 2 , wherein the overlay PAN protocol frame includes data addressed to a PAN device.

9. The method of claim 2 , wherein the one or more frames using the overlay PAN protocol comprises an HCCA-CF (“Hybrid coordination function, controlled channel access-contention free”) poll frame having a plurality of subtype fields including a “to DS” subtype field and a “from DS” subtype field, wherein the HCCA-CF poll frame is sent with both subtype fields cleared, thereby distinguishing from a valid WLAN frame.

10. The method of claim 2 , wherein the overlay PAN protocol frame is transmitted using a highest priority queue.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the one or more frames using the WLAN protocol to signal WLAN devices comprises an HCCA (“Hybrid coordination function, controlled channel access”) frame to set up a traffic stream and using timeslots to communicate with the PAN device.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the one or more frames using the WLAN protocol comprises a CTS (“Clear-to-Send”) frame with an increased duration field.

16. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

signaling a reservation of the wireless medium for a plurality of PAN devices; and

18. The method of claim 16 , further comprising sending a frame to two or more of the plurality of PAN devices with an indication of the two or more PAN devices expected to respond to the frame.

19. The method of claim 1 , where the method is performed by a wireless network device.
