Abstract

A modified rocker assembly having an offset end is designed to be used in engine heads having an obstruction that would not allow a switching rocker arm to be used. The modified rocker assembly is described having an obstructed side and a non-obstructed side. The rocker assembly has an outer structure with a first end, and an inner rocker structure fitting within the outer structure, the inner structure also having a first end. The modified rocker assembly has an axle pivotally connecting the first ends of inner structure to the outer structure, such that the inner structure may rotate within the outer structure around the axle. At least one torsion spring on one side of axle, rotationally biases the inner structure relative to the outer structure. The outer structure, on the obstructed side as it extends from the second end toward the first end, is offset toward the non-obstructed side creating the first offset portion to provide additional clearance on the obstructed side. This design allows the modified rocker arm to fit into an engine head having an obstruction on its obstruction side.

Claims (36)

1. A modified rocker assembly, comprising:

an outer structure having a first offset end and a second end opposite the first offset end;

an inner structure fitting within the outer structure, the inner structure also having a first end and having a second end opposite the first offset end,

wherein the first end of the inner structure is pivotally connected to the first offset end of the outer structure, the first offset end of the outer structure and the first end of the inner structure pivoting about a same axis such that the inner structure pivots within the outer structure; and

at least one torsion spring mounted on a first side of the inner structure, the at least one torsion spring rotationally biasing the inner structure relative to the outer structure,

wherein the outer structure is offset toward a first side adjacent the first offset end creating a first offset portion to provide additional clearance on a second, opposite side.

2. The modified rocker assembly of claim 1 wherein as the outer structure on the first side extends from the second end toward the first offset end, the outer structure curves outwardly away from the second side to provide additional clearance for an additional torsion spring.

3. The modified rocker assembly of claim 1 wherein the at least one torsion spring comprises two adjacent torsion springs.

4. The modified rocker assembly of claim 1 wherein the at least one torsion spring exerts twice the force of a standard torsion spring for a conventional VVL or CDA rocker assembly.

5. The modified rocker assembly of claim 1 wherein the outer structure curves toward the first side adjacent to its first offset end to provide additional clearance on the second, opposite side.

6. The modified rocker assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one torsion spring comprises two torsion springs, both on a same side of the rocker assembly.

7. The modified rocker assembly of claim 6 , wherein the torsion springs are wound in opposite directions.

8. A modified rocker assembly, comprising:

an outer structure having a first pivoting offset end and a second end;

an inner structure fitting within the outer structure, the inner structure also having a first pivoting end and a second end;

an axle pivotally connecting the first pivoting end of the inner structure to the first pivoting offset end of the outer structure, such that the inner structure may pivot within the outer structure around the axle; and

at least one torsion spring mounted on a first side of the axle, the torsion spring rotationally biasing the inner structure relative to the outer structure,

wherein the outer structure is offset toward a first side of the outer structure side adjacent to its first pivoting offset end creating a first offset portion to provide additional clearance on a second side of the outer structure opposite the first side.

9. The modified rocker assembly of claim 8 wherein as the outer structure on the first side extends from the second end toward the first end, the outer structure curves outwardly away from the second side to provide additional clearance for an additional torsion spring.

10. The modified rocker assembly of claim 8 wherein the at least one torsion spring comprises two adjacent torsion springs.

11. The modified rocker assembly of claim 8 wherein the at least one torsion spring exerts twice the force of a standard torsion spring for a conventional VVL or CDA rocker assembly.

12. The modified rocker assembly of claim 8 wherein the outer structure curves toward the first side adjacent the first end of the outer structure to provide additional clearance on the second side.

13. The modified rocker assembly of claim 8 , wherein the at least one torsion spring comprises two torsion springs, both on the first side of the rocker assembly.

14. The modified rocker assembly of claim 13 , wherein the torsion springs are wound in opposite directions.

15. A modified rocker assembly, comprising:

an outer structure having a first end with an offset portion on a first side and a second side opposite the first side;

an inner structure fitting within the outer structure, the inner structure also having a first end;

an axle pivotally connecting the first end of the inner structure to the first end of the outer structure, such that the inner structure may pivot within the outer structure around the axle; and

at least one torsion spring on the first side of the axle, rotationally biasing the inner structure relative to the outer structure,

wherein the outer structure smoothly curves toward the first side creating a first offset portion adjacent the first end of the outer structure to provide additional clearance on the second side.

16. The modified rocker assembly of claim 15 wherein as the outer structure on the first side extends from the second end toward the first end, the outer structure curves outwardly away from the second side to provide additional clearance for an additional torsion spring on the first side and within the outer structure.

17. The modified rocker assembly of claim 15 wherein the at least one torsion spring comprises two adjacent torsion springs.

18. The modified rocker assembly of claim 15 wherein the at least one torsion spring exerts twice the force of a standard torsion spring for a conventional VVL or CDA rocker assembly.

19. The modified rocker assembly of claim 15 wherein the outer structure has a curved section with an extension toward the first side of the outer structure to provide additional clearance on the second side outside the outer structure.

20. The modified rocker assembly of claim 15 , wherein the at least one torsion spring comprises two torsion springs, both on a same side of the rocker assembly.

21. The modified rocker assembly of claim 20 , wherein the torsion springs are wound in opposite directions.
