Abstract

The present disclosure describes an occlusion device and methods of delivering the occlusion device. The occlusion device can include an expandable structure configured to move between an unexpanded configuration and an expanded configuration. The expandable structure can be configured to have an expansion ratio of at least about 5:1. Further, the occlusion device can be configured to prevent substantially all fluid from flowing past the occlusion device when the occlusion device is in the expanded configuration in the vessel.

Claims (25)

1. An endovascular occlusion device for occlusion of blood flow in a vessel, comprising:

a support structure, self-expandable from a reduced cross section for transluminal navigation to an enlarged configuration for occluding a vessel;

the support structure defining a first axially outwardly facing concavity when in the enlarged configuration, the first axially outwardly facing concavity having an upstream opening and a downstream end;

a guidewire opening in the downstream end; and

a collapsible tube extending from the guidewire opening in an upstream direction into the first axially outwardly facing concavity.

2. An endovascular occlusion device as in claim 1 , further comprising a membrane carried by the support structure.

3. An endovascular occlusion device as in claim 2 , wherein the support structure comprises an upstream lobe that defines the first axially outwardly facing concavity, and wherein the support structure additionally comprises a downstream lobe.

4. An endovascular occlusion device as in claim 3 , wherein the downstream lobe comprises a plurality of downstream lobe struts spaced apart when in the enlarged configuration, to provide a plurality of openings therethrough.

5. An endovascular occlusion device as in claim 4 , wherein the downstream lobe struts define a second concavity, facing in an opposite direction from the first axially outwardly facing concavity.

6. An endovascular occlusion device as in claim 4 , wherein expansion of the downstream lobe permits flow between the downstream lobe struts.

7. An endovascular occlusion device as in claim 4 , wherein the upstream lobe comprises a plurality of upstream lobe struts.

8. An endovascular occlusion device as in claim 7 , wherein the membrane extends between the plurality of upstream lobe struts to occlude flow between the upstream lobe struts upon expansion of the upstream lobe.

An endovascular occlusion device as in claim 3 , wherein the upstream lobe is expandable to include a plurality of upstream lobe struts having a first laterally outward facing concave structure, and wherein the downstream lobe is expandable to include a plurality of downstream lobe struts having a second outwardly concave structure.

An endovascular occlusion device as in claim 9 , wherein a radius of a first best fit circle conforming to the first laterally facing concave structure is less than a radius of a second best fit circle conforming to the second outwardly concave structure, the second best fit circle being measured at a same circumferential position as the first best fit circle.

11. An endovascular occlusion device as in claim 3 , wherein the upstream lobe and the downstream lobe are separated by a hub.

12. An endovascular occlusion device as in claim 11 , wherein the hub is flexible to allow bending between the upstream and downstream lobes.

13. An endovascular occlusion device as in claim 11 , wherein the hub is partially expandable.

14. An endovascular occlusion device as in claim 3 , wherein the downstream lobe comprises an open distal end.

15. An endovascular occlusion device as in claim 3 , wherein when in the enlarged configuration, the occlusion device has bilateral asymmetry across a plane extending between the upstream lobe and the downstream lobe.

16. An endovascular occlusion device as in claim 1 , wherein when in the enlarged configuration, the occlusion device has bilateral asymmetry.

17. An endovascular occlusion device as in claim 1 , having an expansion ratio of at least about 5:1.

18. An endovascular occlusion device as in claim 1 , having an expansion ratio of at least about 6:1.

19. An endovascular occlusion device as in claim 1 , having an expansion ratio of at least about 7:1.

20. An endovascular occlusion device as in claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to occlude at least about 90 percent of flow through a vessel when the support structure is in an expanded configuration.

21. An endovascular occlusion device as in claim 1 , wherein a maximum expanded diameter of the support structure is at the upstream opening.
